action

Elizabeth Gilbert's autobiography is about self-discovery and love for yourself. Elizabeth - or Liz for short - lives with her husband in a suburb of New York . She should be happy: she has a good job, no money problems. She also has numerous encouraging friends, but is still unhappy. And so it happens that she is finally left with the shards of her marriage. One of the reasons is that her husband has been pushing her to start a family with him for a long time, but she doesn't feel ready. One night she is sitting on the bathroom floor, crying and praying to God. As their marital problems persist, night escapes to the bathroom become a habit. Liz gets depressed and finally loses love for herself. A short time later, she takes courage and files for a divorce, but she falls into a year-long war of divorce. Eventually she starts an affair, which later also breaks up. When the divorce is official, she decides to take a year off . She divides the year into three stays in countries that begin with "I", which have different meanings for her: She decides to travel to Italy first because she loves the Italian language and food ("Eat") above all else . After that she would like to go to India for a few months because she had previously seen a picture of a smiling Indian woman and absolutely wants to be as happy and satisfied as she is. For this she has to withdraw to an ashram and meditate ("Pray"). After that she also wants to travel to Bali ( Indonesia ), because a medicine man there had prophesied to her a year earlier that she would come again and learn the truth. Here she will find the third motto of the title "Love".

First she travels to Italy. There she perfect her Italian and makes new friends. They teach them il dolce far niente . After the hustle and bustle in New York, she feels calm and joy again for the first time in a long time. She enjoys the many city tours and also the Italian food. She doesn't mind that she put on a few pounds from eating so much. And with a slightly larger clothing size, it flies further.

In India she lives in an ashram . The extreme change of culture bothered her at first, but surprisingly she quickly got used to the new daily routine, which mainly consists of meditation and silence. There she meets a man named Richard. Liz and the loose-mouthed Texan quickly become friends. He's a great support to her, especially since she keeps reproaching herself for her failed marriage and last relationship. After two years of depression, she organizes her thoughts and feelings through frequent meditation and calming down in the ashram. She gets to know each other better, finally learns to let go of the past and stay true to herself. She feels free again and leaves India with a clear conscience and a strong spirit.

As soon as she arrived in Bali, she went to the medicine man she had visited a year earlier. He remembers her and teaches her Balinese meditation (just sit and smile). Liz is fascinated by the culture and beliefs of Bali. In addition, she often asks herself how it comes about that the residents are always so friendly to everything and everyone that she is not used to.

Liz also meets a young, impoverished healer who lives with her young daughter and two adopted orphans in a room behind her run-down practice. Again and again, Liz rescues herself to become a healer when she has self-doubts again. A deep friendship develops, but the healer has big money problems and is on the verge of ruin. Together with her friends from New York, Liz collects enough money to buy her a house. During this time, Liz falls in love with Felipe, an Australian with Brazilian roots who has lived in Bali for years. Although she at first doubts whether she should let a new love into her life during the path of her self-discovery, she gives in and spends the vacation together with him that she had previously rejected.

"A feast for the eyes without a soul, which simply fades out serious problems."

"Self-discovery à la Hollywood - where eating a pasta dish is considered high culture, true knowledge inevitably falls by the wayside."

- Christoph Petersen : Filmstarts .de

“Even if the too smooth production does not seriously convey the spirit of more in-depth life experiences, it is certainly an inspiration for further engagement with the topic of spirituality and faith, also outside of church institutions - not only women's magazines will make this film and it will surely also treat our blossoming novel as a welcome lead story. And which man or woman would not like to be whisked away on a sensual and spiritual journey with Julia Roberts as your guide? "
