occupation

Pastewka is a German TV series with Bastian Pastewka in which he plays himself. The sitcoms are set in Cologne , Bonn and Frankfurt am Main . Directed by Joseph Orr, Peter Welz , Jan Markus Linhof, Tobi Baumann , Erik Haffner , Wolfgang Groos and Markus Sehr .

The first broadcast took place in 2005 on the German television station Sat.1 , on which the series ran until 2014. From 2018 to 2020, Pastewka continued on Amazon Prime Video . Pastewka was awarded the Rose d'Or , the German Comedy Prize and the German Television Prize and was nominated four times for the Grimme Prize .

idea

The idea of the series is based on the American series Lass es, Larry! (Eng. Curb Your Enthusiasm ) with Larry David , the inventor of the comedy series Seinfeld . Pastewka , however, is not an improvisational show , but is based on scripts mainly from the pen of Sascha Albrecht, Chris Geletneky (seasons 1–7) and Bastian Pastewka himself, and the concept comes closer to the Sarah Silverman Program , which, however, only made its series debut after “Pastewka " would have.

The title melody of the first season, composed by Daniel Wehr , has also not been taken over identically, but is similar to the theme music of the original ( Frolic by Luciano Michelini ). A different title topic can be heard in all other seasons.

The concept was originally offered to the TV broadcaster RTL , which, however, refused.

action

The content of the series is everyday unhappiness that Bastian Pastewka has to deal with. They are not based on Pastewka's true experiences, but could happen in this or a similar form: “ Did all of this really happen to him?” “No, not everything. Just the embarrassing moments. “When Pastewka tries to take refuge in abbreviations, excuses and lies of all kinds, these are usually discovered and lead to embarrassing situations. Bastian's habit of speaking ill of others whenever it is useful to him makes his own life difficult. Such situations are regularly turned against Bastian, as the negative talk is mostly exposed.

On the agenda are relationship problems with his girlfriend Anne, family problems with his brother Hagen and his daughter Kim as well as a guerrilla war with his neighbor and Hagen's future wife Mrs. Bruck due to various trivialities. Bastian is always offended with his father, although it is obvious that the apple did not fall far from the tree .

Bastian's means of transport in the series is usually a red Saab 900 . The central location of the first five seasons is Bastian's apartment in Cologne-Sülz . In the sixth season, he and his girlfriend move to Cologne-Marienburg , his brother and wife Bruck also move into the new house immediately afterwards. After separating from Anne, Bastian lives in a Dethleffs Globebus A Class motorhome , which he stole from the set of Annette Frier's "Frier" series.

characters

main characters

Bastian Pastewka

Bastian Pastewka

Bastian Pastewka leads the life of a prominent German comedian . Although not isolated from the public like the stars of Hollywood , but recognized just as often in everyday situations, he tries to master the life that holds all sorts of faux pas for him. In some cases, however, he also sets it up himself, as he has a pronounced tendency to “fuss” in order to “simplify” his life. It is not uncommon for him to unintentionally attract displeasure by acting extremely unhappy and without empathy in many situations. In addition, he constantly struggles with the fact that he is mistaken for other stars and that only a few recognize him on the street as Bastian Pastewka. The relationship between Pastewka and his neighbor Svenja Bruck is tense. Pastewka pretends to be a big fan of television series such as Star Trek and 24 . Pastewka's cell phone is also equipped with the ringtone from the series 24 . His girlfriend attests that he is addicted to television. Pastewka justifies his countless hours in front of the screen by saying that he works in television. As a child, Bastian suspected a hernia , a fact that he mentions very often and which he uses as an excuse not to have to “lift heavily”.

The actor is Bastian Pastewka himself.

Dr. Annemarie "Anne" Leyfert

Anne is Bastian Pastewka's friend. She is a nurse by profession. Before she met Bastian, she studied medicine, but interrupted her studies to spend a year in India . At the request of her father Klaus, who is also a doctor, she decided to resume studying after her stay in India. However, the relationship with Bastian that began shortly afterwards did not result in this, which is why Klaus Leyfert does not like Bastian. In the seventh season, Anne resumes studying medicine, meets regularly with her study group and is now taking her studies very seriously. In the eighth season, she is finally a doctor of medicine in the field of gynecology.

In the first season, Anne and Bastian live in separate apartments, but are already looking for a joint, which they then find at the beginning of the second season. In the course of the series even marriage plans are forged - but there is never a wedding. In the eighth season, a misunderstanding leads to the separation between Anne and Bastian. Your new boyfriend turns out to be Wotan Wilke Möhring in the last episode of the eighth season . In the ninth season, however, we learn that the two have separated again and that Anne and the cosmetic surgeon Dr. Simon Schatzlein is together. The actress is Sonsee Neu .

Hagen Bruck (née Pastewka)

Hagen Bruck is Bastian's half-brother. As a single parent, he takes care of his daughter Kim and tries to make ends meet with his chronically empty wallet and at the same time to find the woman of his life. Since the third season he has been with Svenja Bruck, Bastian Pastewka's neighbor, whom he married in the eighth season and whose name he takes on. The performer is Matthias Matschke .

Kimberley-Jolante "Kim" von Ahlenfeld (née Pastewka)

Kim, actually Kimberley-Jolante Pastewka, is Hagen's daughter. She is 13 years old at the beginning of the series and hates her uncle Bastian from the bottom of her heart. Reasons for confrontations arise quickly when Hagen drops her off at Bastian's home so that she can meet a potential dream woman herself. In the 5th season, she says she is doing her high school graduation. In the sixth season she begins studying art history, but later switches to Sinology . Now a young woman in her twenties, she is working on a musical career in the eighth season as a band member. Kim is characterized by her permanent bad mood. Kim is played by Cristina do Rego , who was actually 17 when she started filming in the first season when she played the 13-year-old.

Regine Holl

Regine is Bastian Pastewka's manager. His career more or less fizzles out, which is also due to the fact that Regine rarely manages to find engagements for Bastian. This can sometimes be attributed to her ignorance of current trends in the media landscape: For example, she is unknown to Inglourious Basterds and she can not distinguish Albus Dumbledore from Inspector Barnaby . In addition, she is fundamentally skeptical about the Internet. Regine also often decides against Bastian's will and, for example, reports him to TV total diving . In addition, she seems to have a strong propensity for alcohol and is portrayed as being heavily drunk in many episodes. She is embodied by Sabine Vitua .

Svenja Bruck

Svenja Bruck is Bastian Pastewka's neighbor. The student, who is annoyed by Bastian's nocturnal rehearsal of “spontaneous” speeches of thanks to his massive piles of waste paper on the common landing, lets her prominent neighbors feel this at every opportunity. From the sixth season at the latest, she also shows signs of a pathological obsession with Pastewka. For example, she voluntarily moves to a residential area that she actually hates, just to continue to have him as a neighbor. From the third season she is also the partner of Bastian's brother Hagen. Furthermore, she is against cruelty to animals, as can be seen in the episode The Stock Cube , and against chemicals, which is why she attaches importance to natural home remedies for medicinal products. In the eighth season, Svenja and Hagen get married. Hagen takes over the family name Bruck. Svenja takes this as an opportunity to tell Bastian that the Pastewkas will die out with him. She is played by Bettina Lamprecht .

Volker Pastewka

Volker Pastewka lives in Bonn and is Bastian's and Hagen's father. He is extremely harsh towards Bastian, which is why Bastian does not particularly like him. In the third season he is apparently in a relationship with his Hungarian cleaning lady Elsa Schwarczak (played by Adriana Altaras ). The actor is Dietrich Hollinderbäumer .

Minor characters

Esther

Esther is Regine Holl's secretary and her deputy. In the episode The Advertising Trailer she was fired, but shortly thereafter discontinued. She only appears at irregular intervals and forges Bastian's signature on his autograph cards. In the second season she gives birth to a daughter and is pregnant again in the fourth season. In season six, she brings her six-year-old son Franklin to work. Esther is portrayed by Lisa Sommerfeldt .

Yo

Jo is Anne's ex-boyfriend and occasionally visits Anne and Bastian. Bastian doesn't like him, however, because he is absolutely convinced that Jo still loves Anne, which Jo also admits in the episode The Wedding (Season 2). In the episode My Friend Jo (season 3), Jo visits the Pastewkas because he has become a representative of an organic energy drink company. In the eighth season, he and Bastian meet at a nudist campsite, where Bastian strangely recognizes Jo before he sees his face when he looks at his crotch. Jo is portrayed by René Steinke .

Susanne Winter

Susanne is a friend of Bastian's friend Anne. She only appears in the first two seasons. She has a relationship with Jochen Winter, whom she also marries at the end of the second season. He previously had a relationship with Georg Uecker and does not even know whether he is homosexual or heterosexual. Susanne works as an interior designer for Anne and Bastian's apartment and is generally characterized by her tearfulness. She is portrayed by Svea Timander .

Locations

Most of the filming locations for the series are in Cologne . The recordings of the apartment building, in which Bastian with Anne and Hagen with Svenja and Kim live for the first five seasons, were taken at the residential building Emmastraße 1 in the southwestern Cologne district of Sülz . The shooting of the villa, in which they live from the sixth season, was made at Kastanienallee 20 in the southern Cologne noble district Marienburg . The shooting location for Gut Bruck , where Hagen lives with Svenja and Kim in the ninth season, was Gut Asperschlag in Bergheim 's Niederaussem district .

Recurring allusions, scenes and jokes

In the course of the series and the individual episodes, various allusions, scenes and jokes (" running gags ") are regularly repeated .

These stylistic devices are used very often in the series and contribute significantly to the characterization of the role figure Pastewka:

  • If Pastewka only suspects that he is about to meet “ordinary people”, he would like to avoid these encounters and often justifies this with the fact that he always has to sign autographs or “unpleasant fans” will ask him: “Make me mal the Brisko Schneider! ”, alluding to his former role character in the program Die Wochenshow .
  • Pastewka often puts himself in embarrassing situations through clumsy behavior, which he finds difficult to deal with. Often times, the argument ends with him being called an ass or an asshole .
  • Pastewka regularly gets into trouble with the police or other law enforcement officials because of various administrative offenses. Above all, he constantly attracts attention because of violations of the road traffic regulations (including "wrong parking", exceeding speed limits, "cell phone at the wheel"). In the episode Das Knöllchen it is mentioned that Pastewka is already registered with 15 points (according to the point system valid at the time) in the register of fitness to drive . As a result , the decision to participate must Pastewka in an advanced seminar for points striking drivers who know what he is trying, however, must be secret from his girlfriend Anne.
  • As soon as there is even light physical work to be done, Pastewka always refuses to do so, pointing out that he was suspected of having a hernia in his childhood. When he mentioned this once in the presence of his father Volker, the latter claimed that he knew nothing about it.
  • Pastewka has no interest in physical activity. His physical fitness and condition are correspondingly poor. Above all, his gross motor, sometimes uncoordinated running style is an expression of his constant lack of exercise.
  • Verbal arguments between Pastewka and Svenja Bruck often end with her annoyed yelling “Lick me, Pastewka!” .
  • Pastewka has a strong aversion to any form of waste separation and disposal.
  • Almost hypocritically Pastewka uses the arguments and information of others almost literally if they seem suitable to assert his interests.
  • Pastewka avoids many fundamental decisions and likes to delay them by saying: “I still need some time to think about it!” He usually ends conversations about babies and weddings in a very targeted manner.
  • While his girlfriend Anne has wanted a baby since the first season, Pastewka stubbornly evades family planning. When asked or alluded to by third parties as to whether Anne is pregnant, he usually reacts dismissively or irritably.
  • Pastewka likes to watch repetitions of older TV series and film series and therefore aligns his daily routine mainly with the TV program. In the episode Das Experiment , Pastewka explains that he always buys two TV guide books in order to be able to mark in one of them which programs he wants to watch and / or record. In the same episode he buys his seventh hard disk recorder, so that his friend Anne suspects that he has a pronounced television addiction. He describes himself as a "pleasure gamer" and justifies his passion with the fact that "it is also a little bit my job".
  • Whenever the opportunity arises, Pastewka brags about completely irrelevant detailed knowledge about films and television series, actors, voice actors and theme music.
  • When driving a car, Pastewka usually listens to the theme music from older films and TV series from music cassettes, unless another recording is important for the plot of the individual episodes (e.g. trucker songs or commercials).
  • Pastewka very often cooks or eats instant mashed potatoes with sausages. When he subsequently The cooking class exclusively buys these two ingredients, he has been ready just counted the total amount of 3.79 euros, suggesting that he repeats this purchase with high regularity.
  • Pastewka has a strong aversion to a vegetarian diet and hardly eats any fruit and vegetables herself. Above all, he disdains leek and leek dishes, which, however, are among the favorite dishes of his friend Anne. After every purchase, a few leeks always disappear.
  • Pastewka regularly sits in an ice cream café and eats a "Pinocchio sundae" or a "giant sundae" there. When he subsequently The request will submit his tax return several receipts, it passes the tax consultant a plastic bag with service documents from the ice cream parlor.
  • In the first few seasons in particular, Pastewka buys or eats dark double biscuits with a light cream filling , which he calls "car tire biscuits".
  • Pastewka gossips in various forms about his professional colleagues from the entertainment industry and other celebrities. In addition, he sometimes spreads slanderous rumors about these people or creates intrigues against them. He doesn't even exclude his supposedly best circle of friends. He is then regularly confronted by the people concerned, whereupon Pastewka usually tries to deny everything or in turn directs the suspicion to another person.
  • Pastewka constantly makes allusions to Michael Kessler's nose - even in his presence. Pastewka often supports this with a special gesture in which he slips his half-open right hand over his own nose several times and swings it back and forth.
  • He regularly calls Michael Kessler “Klausi” or tells him that he can “pee in his boots”, alluding to Kessler's role in the film Manta, Manta . Kessler usually counters with a “Bye Brisko!” Or “Are you doing the Rose Indian again?”.
  • His father Volker calls him "Dödel!" Very often. Bastian Pastewka does not find any recognition in him for the prominence he has achieved. In Volker's opinion, Bastian is a selfish, haughty and in every respect clumsy "idiot".
  • Anke Engelke calls Bastian Pastewka “ Se bastian” more often , which annoys him a bit.
  • Michael Kessler is a self- confessed smart driver in the series , who Pastewka describes as a “ dwarf- nose mobile”.
  • Pastewka's overemphasized exclamation “Soooo!” When he sees his opinion confirmed.
  • The saying “Fluppe aus!” From Hagen to his daughter Kim when she smokes is also frequent

Others

  • The series director, Joseph Orr , has made several cameos on the series; as post office clerk in Der Personalausweis (1x2), as director Steffen in Das Praktikum (2x7), taxi driver in Der Wecker (3x2) and driving examiner in Der Pusher (4x1).
  • The episode The new series (7x9) alludes directly to the genesis of the series. It is mentioned that such a format is very much based on Curb Your Enthusiasm by Larry David . The "inspired" that is brought out in this context alludes to the credits of the Stromberg series .
  • There is some overlap with today's show . So include Dietrich Hollinderbäumer , Bettina Lamprecht and Matthias Matschke (since 2015) in two shipments to the main occupation. Oliver Welke played with Pastewka , while Bastian Pastewka was a guest in Welkes heute-show 2011. Carolin Kebekus , Alexis Kara and Hans-Joachim Heist had Pastewka guest roles before they belonged to the heute-show ensemble. From the sixth season, the episodes are also available in HDTV format. The eighth season will also be broadcast in UHD for the first time.
  • Pastewka's Christmas story was produced in HD, but was only released on DVD and not part of the Blu-ray for the seventh season. The special episode was broadcast in 1080i on Sat.1 HD .

In Der Kratzer (4x11), Volker drives a Mercedes W124 to the "blackworker line". In Der Trip - Part 1 (6x7) he has a Mercedes-Benz 280 CE with a special paint job. Both have the same Bonn registration number BN-DO 140 .
  • Bastian Pastewka claims in Das Knöllchen (4x6) that his Saab 900 is a diesel. However, this model was only built with a gasoline engine (can also be recognized by the occasionally visible G-Kat sticker ).
  • In the episode The Ceremony (7x1), Bastian claims that his Saab weighs two and a half tons (quote: "That's why they went bankrupt."). The actual curb weight of this model is only around half.
  • Jo Kern has two episode roles in the series: in Das Fitness-Studio (2x6) as trainer Sonja Grünewald and as author Aurora Pönsgen (6x9) in Der Kommissar .
  • According to the doorbell, a certain C. Geletneky lives in the same house as Michael Kessler . Chris Geletneky was the author of the series until season 7 and also played Ed in the fictional sitcom All Against Ed .
  • Stephan Grossmann , who works in an advertising agency in the episode Der Tricorder (3x6), has a brief cameo in Das letzte Date (8x8).
  • In a conversation between Anne and Bastian in the episode The Voucher (2x1), the day of the death of Louis de Funès is discussed, which should be the next day. The actual date of death is January 27; the episode obviously takes place at a significantly warmer time of year.

Broadcasting and ratings

The first three seasons were broadcast annually between 2005 and 2007. Although the third season was only able to achieve an average of nine percent market share, a fourth season was produced, but this time only aired two years after the last. The shooting of the fifth season lasted from August 2010 to January 2011, the broadcast took place shortly thereafter, almost exactly one year after the end of the previous season, for the first time completely at the beginning of the year. The sixth season was broadcast by Sat.1 in 2012, like the first three seasons, towards the end of the year.

In April 2013 filming began for nine episodes of a seventh season and a Christmas special. According to Bastian Pastewka, the Christmas episode, which was broadcast on Sat.1 on December 20, 2013 at 11:30 p.m. , marks the start of the season. The regular episodes of the season should be seen from March 21, 2014, but were initially postponed to the summer of 2014 in favor of the series Knallerfrauen . In July 2014, Sat.1 announced the broadcast of the seventh season from September 5, 2014 on Fridays from 10:15 p.m. for the first time in double episodes.

On February 20, 2017, the production of an eighth season was confirmed, which has been on Amazon Prime Video since January 26, 2018 .

On January 31, 2018, Pastewka announced on Facebook that the series is entering a ninth season.

Filming for season 9 began on May 3, 2018 and ended on July 30, 2018. On January 25, 2019, all episodes of season 9 were released simultaneously. Exact call figures are not provided. According to Amazon, the 9th season is the most watched comedy series on the in-house video service in Germany and Austria.

The 10th season appeared on behalf of Amazon on February 7, 2020. Bastian Pastewka stated that there will be no more sequels.

Reviews

The series generally generated a positive image from the start. In the opinion of Stefan Niggemeier - who is later mentioned in the series - in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Pastewka plays "the role of his life" in the series. According to Matthias Schwarzer from Neue Westfälische, the eighth season of Pastewka contains many product placements , hardly uses the running gags of previous seasons and "contains more tragic moments".
