biography

Youth and musical beginnings

Olli Dittrich was born as the second of three sons of the journalist Kurt Dittrich and the painter and fashion illustrator Gisela Dittrich. He lived in Offenbach am Main until he was 3 years old , after which the family moved to Hamburg . Initially living in the Niendorf district for four years , Olli Dittrich spent the rest of his childhood in Hamburg-Langenhorn . His father worked among other things in the editor-in-chief of Welt am Sonntag and the Berliner Morgenpost . In the 1980s he also headed the journalism school of the Axel Springer Verlag . Olli Dittrich first attended the Suederschule Langenhorn and later switched to the Alstertal high school . As a result of bad grades, he repeated two classes and was transferred to class 9 at the Eschenweg secondary school. There he obtained the secondary school leaving certificate in 1975 . In his youth, Olli Dittrich was involved in competitive sports and was a winger at TuS Alstertal . After taking guitar and drum lessons, he learned to play the rhythm instrument washboard from Ulf Krüger , a founding member of the Hamburg jazz-pop group Leinemann . At the age of 16, Dittrich founded the skiffle band Abbey Tavern Skiffle Company , with which he was musically active for four years and performed in Hamburg clubs, including the Fabrik and Uncle Pö . In 1977 he released his debut single Ich bin 18, produced by Ulf Krüger and assigned to the hit genre . In the same year, Dittrich published a version of the children's song Who stole the coconut under the stage name Die Affenbande ?

After finishing school, Olli Dittrich trained as a theater painter from 1975 to 1978 at the Hamburg State Opera . He then worked for the record company Polydor for seven years , where he worked his way up from packer to product manager. At the same time, he tried to develop further in the musical field and in 1982 published a sequencer version of the theme song for the television series Flipper with his group The Little Olmidi and his friends . He was also involved as a composer, guest singer and cover artist on the album Tokyo Twist by the synth-pop trio Tone Band . In 1985 he gave up his job with the record company and became unemployed. Living on the verge of subsistence for several years , he wrote about 250 songs during this time, among others for James Last , Annette Humpe and Die Prinzen . In 1989 he recorded his first album, Modern Guy, under the stage name TIM . The debut produced by Udo Arndt with guest musicians such as Peter Weihe and Curt Cress was commercially unsuccessful with around 300 copies sold. In Edinburgh and London in November 1989 a video clip was made for the only single Happy New Year , produced by the London company Limelight / The Unit, which produced Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer , among others . Dittrich worked here with the Australian director Jeff Skinner and the then largely unknown cameraman John Mathieson .

Dittrich was active as a singer, percussionist , keyboardist and conférencier in Hamburg pop bands such as Tina and the Caprifischer and Susi's Schlagersextett . Together they played around 150 shows a year. With Stephan Zacharias on bass and Jon Flemming Olsen on the electric guitar Dittrich joined since 1992 as a drummer in the Beatles - Revival band The Bietels on.

Movie and TV

1990s - breakthrough as a comedian with RTL Saturday Night

Olli Dittrich after a recording from RTL Saturday night

Dittrich met the comedian Wigald Boning through Ulf Krüger in 1991 . The duo then shot around 100 joint spots for the Bonings Bonbons column , which is broadcast daily on Premiere . As Wigald Boning and Die Doofen , they released the album long-playing record in 1992 as well as the singles Fiep, Fiep, Fiep and I am made entirely of liquorice , but they did not score any chart positions. In the same year Dittrich appeared in the newly founded Quatsch Comedy Club in Hamburg and for the first time embodied his self-made character Dittsche on stage , which he developed further over the years.

Dittrich gained nationwide fame through the comedy show RTL Saturday Night , which was awarded the Bavarian TV Prize , and of which he was a member of 158 issues from November 1993 to May 1998. Inspired by the sports report Einmarsch der Nation interpreted by Heino Jaeger , Dittrich reported in his column Neues vom Spocht in the form of puns on fictitious sports reports, which, however, often relate to real professional athletes. In addition, he faked film classics in his cinema category Olliwood and repeatedly parodied TV presenter Jean Pütz with his everyday scientific information series Hobbythek . He was a regular performer as a customer and husband in the Kentucky screams fuck and Senen a Toe series of sketches , which created their puns from spinning letters. However, Dittrich gained popularity primarily through the interview parody Two Chairs - an opinion that was an integral part of the program with numerous issues. As part of the discussion, in which Wigald Boning acted as the moderator, Dittrich asked his current weekly questions by wearing almost deceptively real masks and costumes by celebrities such as automobile racing driver Michael Schumacher , tennis player Boris Becker , erotic entrepreneur Beate Uhse , opera singer Luciano Pavarotti or Music producer Dieter Bohlen parodied. Art figures such as the one from Hamburg-St. Pauli- born pimp Mike Hansen, the intellectually restricted boxer Butsche Roni, the cigarillo-smoking art and culture critic Hajo Schröter-Naumann, the funky fashion designer Jaques Gelee or the exuberantly cheerful ski instructor Gigi Hofleitner. The duo received the Adolf Grimme Prize in 1995 for their performance . Dittrich wrote most of his gags himself.

After musical appearances on RTL Saturday night Boning and Dittrich reunited as the nonsense group Die Doofen . This was followed by the release of the single Mief and the album Songs the World Doesn't Need , with which the duo reached the top of the charts in the summer of 1995. In the same year they appeared alongside Van Halen and Slash's Snakepit in the opening act of Bon Jovi's stadium tour . In 1996 they published their second album Melodies for Melons and the singles Princess de Bahia Tropical , Zicke Zack Tsatsiki and Lach but sometimes . Die Doofen sold a total of around 1.5 million records in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. On the occasion of their success they have been awarded the most important German music and media prizes, including the Echo , the Golden Tuning Fork and the Bambi .

After RTL Saturday night ended, Dittrich took part in Markus Imboden's comedy Frau Rettich, die Czerni und ich (1998). Shortly afterwards he took on the role of editor Wollner in Helmut Dietl's comedy Late Show (1998). From October 1998 to March 2001 Dittrich was the host of the outdoor bet on the ZDF Saturday evening show Wetten, dass ..? involved. In addition, he embodied the fictional viewer Karl-Heinz Brinkmann in short clips, who submitted absurd betting offers and tried to implement them immediately. On the occasion of the last editions with Thomas Gottschalk in October and December 2011, Olli Dittrich made himself available two more times as the host of the outdoor bet.

2000s - consolidation as improvisation and quick-change artist

Olli, animals, sensations

With Olli, Tiere, Sensationen ran from March 2000 to May 2001 on ZDF Dittrich's first own program, in which he concentrated on everyday observations and transformed them into celebrities and fictional characters. A frequent scene partner was Mona Sharma . While characters like Mike Hansen, Butsche Roni and Hajo Schröter-Naumann were already known from Dittrich's appearances on RTL Saturday Night , Dittsche was presented to the general public for the first time. In contrast to the currently broadcast series, however, the clips only lasted a few minutes and instead of current political issues dealt with questions such as whether mashed potatoes should be eaten with a spoon or a fork. From the second season, the episodes were recorded in front of an audience and the first blind date episodes were shown, also only for a few minutes. The show did not have a script, many scenes were improvised. Because she did not reach the quota, production was discontinued after two seasons with a total of sixteen episodes.

Blind date

Together with Anke Engelke , Dittrich appeared in loose sequence in the ZDF television series Blind Date from 2000 , which presented a new narrative form of the film: two actors meet each other without prior script or knowledge of the role of the other. The episodes Blind Date 1 (2001), Taxi nach Schweinau (2002), The five-legged elephant (2003), London-Moabit (2004) and Blue Wonder (2005) were created. In 2003 Dittrich and Engelke received the Grimme Prize in Gold. In “Tanzen Verboten” (2006), two characters who knew each other met for the first time with the aim of bringing new wind to their ideas. The concept without a script and agreements was retained. This sixth part has remained the last so far.

In 2004 , Olli Dittrich took on the role of the East German tourist Dieter Dubinsky in the Edgar Wallace film parody Der WiXXer , which was conceived for the cinema . His occupation as Reich Minister Joseph Goebbels in Jo Baier's film Stauffenberg (2004) attracted attention . The idea that a comedian should impersonate one of the most influential politicians from the time of National Socialism caused unease in advance. However, his portrayal was rated "excellent" by critics.

Dittsche - Really Real Life
From left to right: Jon Flemming Olsen , Olli Dittrich as Dittsche, Knut Hartmann and Franz Jarnach , 2012

Dittrich has had long-lasting success with the series Dittsche, which has been broadcast on WDR television since February 2004 - Real Life . The improvised tragicomic chamber play with Jon Flemming Olsen as host Ingo and until the beginning of 2017 Franz Jarnach alias Mr. Piggi as the almost silent regular guest “Schildkröte” now comprises 21 seasons and is broadcast live from a snack bar in Hamburg-Eppendorf . Olli Dittrich embodies the unemployed, beer-drinking counter philosopher Dittsche , who, dressed in a bathrobe , rants about God and the world, life, his neighbors and the BILD newspaper . Actual, current events and celebrities of the week - so-called "titans" - provide the templates. The action is observed by six permanently installed cameras that are randomly cut by a computer. So far, numerous prominent personalities have appeared as surprise guests, including Thomas Gottschalk as a kitchen assistant, Rudi Carrell , Günther Jauch , Uwe Seeler , Marius Müller-Westernhagen and Hamburg's First Mayor Olaf Scholz . In 2004 the format was awarded the German Television Prize and in 2005 the Gold Grimme Prize. Dittrich also received the Golden Camera 2009 in the Best Entertainment category .

Beckenbauer parody and Media Markt spots

Based on the ZDF format What now ...? Das Erste broadcast the World Cup review What to do, Mr. Beckenbauer in December 2006 in the Harald Schmidt Show . In the interview parody, Dittrich mimed soccer official Franz Beckenbauer , who answered questions from moderator Harald Schmidt . The 20-minute work was created in a pseudo-documentary setting in the Hotel Atlantic . Dittrich was nominated for the 2007 Adolf Grimme Prize in the entertainment special category for the parodic representation and deconstruction of the media character Beckenbauer . German daily newspapers rated Dittrich's performance as a "happy symbiosis" and described him as a "true emperor". (See also 2015 below.)

From November 2007 the comedian appeared in commercials for the electronics store chain Media Markt . In doing so, he played the company's “toughest customers”, according to the advertising slogan, in multiple roles by depicting various social milieus as prototypes and exaggerated. On the occasion of the European Football Championship in 2008 , Media Markt produced four separate commercials with the fictional character “Toni”, who was supposed to caricature an Italian with sunglasses, a gold chain and a three-day beard. One of these spots satirically based on the referee bribery scandal in Italian professional football, which led to Juventus' relegation in 2006 . The Italian daily newspapers Corriere della Sera and La Repubblica then expressed criticism and described the commercials as extremely clichéd. As a compromise, Media Markt stopped broadcasting the satirical referee commercial.

From 2003 to 2011, Olli Dittrich participated as a member of the advice team in more than 40 editions of the improvisational comedy program Genial besides . In 2007 he published a DVD collection entitled A Man Has Many Faces , which shows excerpts from his creative period from 1987 to 2007.

2010s

In the ARD television film Carl & Bertha , which thematizes the life of the automobile pioneers Bertha and Carl Benz , Dittrich took on the role of competitor Gottlieb Daimler in 2011 . At the side of Katja Riemann , he embodied a 33-year-old musician and bon vivant, a 61-year-old driving instructor, a Lebanese takeaway operator, a 70-year-old yogi and the head of an advertising agency in the cinema production The Theory of Relativity . Dittrich was nominated for the German Actor Award for portraying the five characters . In collaboration with the author Anne Ameri-Siemens , Dittrich published his autobiography The Really Real Life in March 2011 , a combination of interviews and self-written anecdotes. The book became a bestseller. With a combination of reading and impromptu tales, he went on a nationwide tour of more than 30 cities under the title Dasreal True Life 2012.

From September 2011 until the show was canceled in early May 2012, Olli Dittrich was a recurring “surprise guest” on the Harald Schmidt Show . After Harald Schmidt switched to Sky Deutschland in September 2012, he was again part of the show's team as a sidekick .

On May 6, 2013, Dittrich's 30-minute breakfast television was broadcast on ARD, a parody of the morning magazines. This unique piece was the prelude to a series of pastiche on German TV genres, originally based on seven episodes, which Dittrich produced together with "Beckground-TV" for WDR. Here he can be seen in short reports in nine roles, also as a studio presenter. Cordula Stratmann is co-moderator . Cameo appearances by Lothar Matthäus, Thorsten Fink, Reinhold Beckmann, Hellmuth Karasek and Ben Becker can be seen.

On December 27, 2014 , part 2 of the cycle followed with Das TalkGespräch , a parody of German talk shows. The special camera technology "MotionControl", which only exists five times in the world, made it possible for Dittrich, who plays all talk guests, to also use them in moving camera settings such as B. Crane drives or pans could show and interact at the same time. For this purpose, the takes recorded by Dittrich in well over a hundred individual settings were later put together in the computer. In addition, elaborate films were made for each of the talk guest characters. The moderator was played by Cordula Stratmann. There were cameo appearances by Tobias Künzel, Marius Müller-Westernhagen, Peer Steinbrück, Jan Josef Liefers and Leander Haußmann.

Part 3 is dedicated to the documentation genre. On June 4, 2015, Das Erste Dittrich's television satire Schorsch Aigner - The man who was Franz Beckenbauer was broadcast . In a collage of archive material, statements from real contemporary witnesses and the interview with Hans-Georg “Schorsch” Aigner (Olli Dittrich) and his wife (Carolin Fink), this mockumentary reveals that Franz Beckenbauer had a doppelganger for himself for almost fifty years. Documentarist Tom Theunissen was co-author and co-director. There were cameo appearances by Guido Buchwald, Anthony Baffoe, Dieter Kürten, Jörg Wontorra, Ralph Siegel and Uwe Seeler. The response in the reviews was positive.

In October 2015, part 4 of the cycle, a supplementary episode in response to the Spiegel research on the 2006 World Cup awards, was produced at short notice , and on November 5, 2015 under the title The FIFA fairy tale: Questions to Schorsch Aigner - The man who Franz Beckenbauer was broadcast on ARD. In an interview with Tom Theunissen, Dittrich as Schorsch Aigner relieves Franz Beckenbauer of any responsibility for the unexplained payment of 6.7 million euros from the DFB to FIFA.

In the fifth part of the cycle series, Dittrich appears as outside reporter Sandro Zahlemann, who reports from Leipzig Central Station , where a top-class foreign delegation is expected to announce a billion-dollar economic contract. The special episode The Sandro Report: Zahlemann live was filmed with a single camera angle and was broadcast on January 7th, 2016 on Das Erste. Claus Weselsky had a cameo .

Part 6 of the cycle, Self-Talks with Konstantin Pfau (December 29, 2016, Das Erste), is dedicated to the intellectual talk formats of television. Here, in three individual conversations, one guest presents himself to the moderator in a cool, reduced studio setting. In addition to the vain host Konstantin Pfau, Dittrich plays the guests Youssef al Bustani, Michael Trevor Pitchford and Jörn-Philipp Echternach, who answer questions about special topics of the past year (integration, Brexit, Turkey). The special thing about the approach was that Dittrich provided his characters with résumés, biographical details and facts about the current occasion of his visit, this information was passed on to an interviewer who initially conducted the survey freely, i.e. without a script or agreements. The aim was to achieve authenticity and atmospheric conversation density, with all spontaneous inquiries and surprises. At the same time, the interviewer's questions were transcribed during the recording , and Dittrich then freely reproduced them on the last day of shooting in the figure of his moderator. The recordings of all four figures were then later put together in the editing room. The motion control process was used again to imitate the typical visual language of these formats. This enabled Dittrich to act with himself even in moving camera settings, such as slow drives, pans or zooms. The finished 1: 1 conversations were not shown in full and one after the other, but episodically, in a box structure. Til Schweiger makes a cameo in a short single-player film .

In the 7th edition of his TV cycle, Dittrich dedicates himself as author, actor and director with Der Meisterreporter - Sigmar Seelenbrecht turns 81 (June 15, 2017, Das Erste) to the classic "TV homage", the documentary tribute to a popular person. Here: the archetype of the film and TV journalist who has shaped the history and development of TV journalism as a pioneer for decades. Numerous of his investigative coups, interviews with greats in world politics or revelatory reports document in excerpts Seelenbrecht's work over a period of over 50 years. Seelenbrecht himself comments on these sequences, today (2017) 81 years old, in an interview with Tom Theunissen (co-director) and thus forms the central theme of the format. (Co-Author: Claudius Pläging) For this we see Olli Dittrich as Sigmar soul Brecht in six different ages - from ambitious, thirty years young journalists, even in blurred black / white images, as a commentator at the report from Bonn the 70 or the daily themes of the 80s and 90s to today's grand seigneur of the scene, who looks back at the age of 81. The program plays with several levels: with curious reinterpretations of historical events, with a humorous but at the same time critical examination of the subject of fake news. With the metamorphoses of Olli Dittrich in the 6-fold role of Sigmar Seelenbrecht: A dazzling figure, aged over five decades, starting in the late 60s. With cameo appearances and comments on the person of Seelenbrecht by Andreas Englisch, Giovanni di Lorenzo, Ulrich Wickert, Anne Will, Hajo Seppelt, Klaus-Peter Thaler, Ulrich Deppendorf, Günther Jauch and Matthias Brandt. The aim was to create absolute credibility of the actual existence of the "master reporter" Seelenbrecht and to spread invented histories. This could be achieved through the perfect masks, the authentic look and tone of the fake material interwoven with original cutouts and the statements of real, prominent personalities. This mixture should also offer the opportunity to take a parodic look at the development of television journalism over the past decades.

In the 8th part Trixie Wonderland - Christmas with Trixie Dörfel (December 21, 2017, Das Erste), Olli Dittrich works again with Tom Theunissen and producer Marcus Foag (both co-director) and with Claudius Pläging (co-author). The parody of the 30-minute format combines the style of public Christmas specials with the pepped up glossy look of celebrity boulevard magazines from private TV stations. The focus is on the fictional 60-year-old actress and singer Trixie Dörfel, who already appeared in Dittrich's talk show parody Das TalkGespräch . The Austrian Mimin welcomes folk music star Stefanie Hertel , who is a prominent guest reporter through the format, in her house in Munich-Bogenhausen, which is decorated for Christmas . Dörfel chats with her about personal preferences for Christmas, about baking and cooking recipes, original clothing for Christmas Eve or gives diet and cosmetic tips, accompanied by the promotion of her own product line “triXiebzehn”. She also talks about private matters: about her collection of paintings by Christine Neubauer, about her "second and fourth" husband, the director Peter Pudl, about her films ("The Burning Classroom", "Mr. Pastor turns a blind eye") and about her numerous films Awards such as the “Golden Spoon of the City of Bad Hersfeld” or the “ Bambi ” in the “Charity” category. The Dörfel received this for an episode from the series “Klinikparadies” in which she played the role of Dr. Isabell Jacobi treated a refugee pro bono and averted a threatened leg amputation. For this purpose, the decisive film scene was shot in the style of comparable hospital soaps and integrated into the magazine, as was an excerpt from Dörfel's tearful acceptance speech at the Bambi awards. In various sequences we also see Trixie Dörfel, how she is involved in the relocation of raccoons from Brandenburg, Hesse and Saxony-Anhalt for her own charity "WWF - World Raccoon Fun" (motto: "Help and fun") from their built camp to Bavaria sets in, the drum beats. The individual thematic chapters of the magazine are accompanied by six clip-like full playback sequences in which Trixie Dörfel gives the best of Christmas carols from her current Christmas album of the same name, "Trixie Wonderland". The highlight at the end of the program is a real live performance with an orchestra on the MDR program “The great show of Christmas carols - presented by Stefanie Hertel”.

Episode 9 Trixie Nightmare - The Deep Fall of Trixie Dörfel (December 20, 2018, Das Erste) is a tragically cheerful continuation of the Trixie Dörfel parody of tabloid journalism and the ideal world of popular hits, which breaks up in this part .
