The television series Flipper is based on the film character Flipper , a dolphin who appeared in the movies Flipper (1963), New Adventure with Flipper (1964) and later again in Flipper from 1996. There are two series; the original ran from 1964 to 1967 in three seasons, the remake Flippers new adventure from 1995 to 2000 in four seasons.

background

After the success of the two movies about Flipper, the television series of the same name was created between 1964 and 1967. A total of 88 episodes of the NBC adventure series were broadcast over three seasons. In Germany, the series was shown in the afternoon program of ZDF from 1966. Only 75 episodes were shown until 1972. The remaining 13 episodes were only broadcast on the cable channel in 1994 . The authors Ricou Browning , James Buxbaum , Jack Cowden , Maria Little and Monroe Manning created an animal series hero, also known as the " Lassie of the Seas". Ivan Tors produced the series with his company Ivan Tors Film Inc. and MGM Television, the Miami Seaquarium and NBC.

action

Porter Ricks works as Chief Ranger for Coral Key Park on the Florida coast . The widower lives there with his two sons, 15-year-old Sandy and ten-year-old Bud. The family friend is Flipper, the dolphin. The series is about impending dangers, for example people in distress and criminal hunts. Flipper saves every situation, so that all episodes close with a happy ending .

Theme song

English original:

"They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
no-one you see is smarter than he,
and we know Flipper lives in a world full of wonder,
flying there under, under the sea!

Everyone loves the king of the sea,
ever so kind and gentle is he,
tricks he will do when children appear,
and how they laugh when he's near!

They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
no-one you see, is smarter than he,
and we know Flipper lives in a world full of wonder,
flying there under, under the sea! "

German version (sung by Hans Delfin and his children ):

“Flipper is our best friend,
it always gets funny when it appears.
He wants to be fun, great tricks,
he brings us hours of happiness.

You just call Flipper, Flipper, he'll be here soon,
everyone knows him, the clever dolphin.
We love pinball, pinball, the friend of all children,
adults no less love him too. "

Remake

Under the title Flippers New Adventures (The New Adventures of Flipper), a remake of the series was filmed and broadcast in four seasons from 1995 to 2000. The German first broadcast took place in November 1996.

criticism

The trainer Richard O'Barry , who trained the five pinball actors for the first TV season in 1964, later spoke out against the training of dolphins as movie stars, as it meant considerable stress for the animals. Flipper triggered a worldwide dolphin hype and created a steadily growing need for docile water artists. He therefore also advocates boycotting dolphin shows . O'Barry, who became an animal rights fighter after the death of one of the female dolphins who played the series, documented in The Bay in 2009 that many of these dolphins are deprived of their freedom using cruel methods while their conspecifics who are not selected as show actors were tortured to be killed.
