action

Sandy Ricks lives with his parents on an island off the coast of Florida . The “red plague” raged there recently and destroyed a large part of the fish population. Sandy's father is a fisherman and, like all local fishermen, has problems finding new schools of fish. On a tour far from the coast they get caught in a hurricane . They barely manage to save themselves from this one, but the storm devastates the small town. Although the house of the Ricks family survived the storm, there is still a lot to repair. In addition, the fishing boat is repaired, for which the father has to travel to the mainland for ten days. He transfers the work on the house to Sandy, which he starts immediately.

One afternoon Sandy is invited on a fishing trip by the father of his girlfriend Kim. Kim's cousin is also there. While Sandy and Kim snorkel, Kim dives with a harpoon in search of a catch. A bottlenose dolphin approaches him , which he shoots at and hits on the fluke. The dolphin then tries to flee, but pulls the cousin behind him until his head hits a stone and remains unconscious on the ground. Kim and Sandy rush to his aid and bring him ashore on the boat.

Sandy, who has learned from his father that he should spare every animal pain, returns to the bay with a loaded rifle. He finds the wounded dolphin lying on the coast and decides to help him and brings him to the jetty of his father's boat. With the help of his mother, he can nurse Flipper, as he calls it, back to health. Since he has to go to work for Flippers forage in the village, he neglects the work on the house.

When the father comes back, he is angry about it, but the mother explains. Nevertheless, the next day he releases the dolphin, who is now healthy again, back into the wild because he needs the pool for the boat. A few days later, Sandy and his father go out fishing again. Flipper appears in front of Sandy, unnoticed by his father, and shows him the way to a school of fish. The catch is brought home to the pool, which Sandy is doing repairs. Flipper reappears here too, plays with the boy, but then skips the gate to the pool and eats the remaining fish from the catch. At that moment the father comes home in the boat and sees the dolphin swimming away. As a punishment, he asks Sandy to bring back every single fish. Happily, the boy is drifting off the coast alone. Flipper comes back again and brings him one fish after the other.

Back home, Sandy tries to tell his parents about Flipper, but his father interrupts him. He is only interested in the fishing location. At dinner he tells Sandy that due to the poor situation of the fishermen, he is willing to kill any animal that eats fish - including dolphins. Sandy tries to find Flipper early the next morning. During a dive he is attacked by sharks, but Flipper can kill them. The dolphin drags the exhausted boy to his father's boat, who is exploring the fishing spot with a friend. By doing this, Flipper can ensure that other dolphins swimming there are not shot by the two men at the last minute. The fishermen realize that there is enough food for everyone again and that the dolphins should be respected.
