Events
- February 1: The Deutsche Kinemathek is founded in Berlin as a registered association. The first director is Gerhard Lamprecht .
- June 12: World premiere of Cleopatra (in the title role: Elizabeth Taylor ). With a production cost of US $ 44 million - adjusted for inflation, US $ 286 million (2005) - this production is considered the most expensive feature film of all time. These immense costs, which could not be offset by income in the following years, drove the production company 20th Century Fox to the brink of financial ruin.
- September 23: World premiere of Das Schweigen . This film, directed by Ingmar Bergman , sparked massive protests from conservative circles after its German premiere the following year. The focus of the criticism was on the one hand several revealing scenes, but also the fact that the voluntary self-regulation of the film industry had given this production the title “particularly valuable”.
- The Swedish Film Institute is founded.
- Winner of the BRAVO Otto readers' choice 1963:
- Category - Male Movie Star: Gold Rock Hudson , Silver OW Fischer , Bronze Anthony Perkins
- Category - female film star: gold Sophia Loren , silver Ruth Leuwerik , bronze Liselotte powder
