Leslie Caron
Leslie Claire Margaret Caron (born July 1, 1931 in Boulogne-Billancourt near Paris ) is a French actress and dancer . She achieved worldwide fame in the 1950s through leading roles in the film musicals An American in Paris and Gigi .
life and career
Leslie Caron was born in Boulogne-Billancourt, but she grew up with her parents and her brother Aimery in the scheme established by their grandparents Art Deco - town house number 35 on the Boulevard de la Saussaye in Neuilly-sur-Seine on.
As the daughter of an American dancer, she received dance lessons as a child, and from 1944 to 1946 she studied dance at the Paris Conservatory . Three years later, Caron became prima ballerina at the Ballet des Champs-Elysées . There she was discovered by Gene Kelly , who gave her a role in his next musical film An American in Paris . The cinema production was awarded six Oscars and resulted in more film offers for Caron.
In 1953 she received a British Film Academy Award for best foreign actress and an Oscar nomination for best leading actress for her role in the love story Lili . This was repeated in 1962 with the melodrama The Indiscreet Room . In the 1960s she appeared in various musicals and Broadway productions, mostly in Europe, but turned away from musicals in her film roles and starred in comedies, adventure films and film dramas. For example, in 1979 she appeared in the sports drama Golden Girl alongside Susan Anton and Curd Jürgens .
In 1989 she was the jury president of the Berlinale and the World Film Festival . Since the beginning of the 21st century she has been the only actress from the ranks of the musical stars of the 50s who are still on stage and on set. In 2000 she appeared as Madame Audel in the worldwide hit film Chocolat . She received an Emmy Award for the first time in 2007 for the role of a rape victim in the episode Recall of the TV series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (Law and Order: New York) .
Caron is three times divorced. Between 1951 and 1954 she was married to the film composer Geordie Hormel , between 1956 and 1965 to the director Peter Hall ; the second marriage had two children. Her third marriage to director and film producer Michael Laughlin lasted from 1969 to 1980. In the mid-1960s , she was in a relationship with fellow actor Warren Beatty and in 1994 and 1995 she had a brief relationship with actor Robert Wolders .
