Falcon Crest is an American television series that was produced from 1981 to 1990 and comprises 227 episodes. Together with Dallas , Dynasty and Knots Landing it was one of the prime-time - soap operas of the 1980s. While the other series mostly revolved around the oil business, Falcon Crest dealt with the subject of viticulture .

production

The plot was set in the fictional Tuscany Valley and the city of San Francisco in California . The Sonoma and Napa Valley , two wine-growing regions north of San Francisco, were used as the filming location for the Tuscany Valley . The Victorian mansion on Falcon Crest is the Villa Miravalle of Spring Mountain Winery in St. Helena , where the interiors for The Vintage Years , the forerunner of the series, were filmed. Later all scenes were recorded in replicas of the house in the studio.

The central role of winery owner Angela Channing was embodied by Oscar winner Jane Wyman . Other leading roles were Robert Foxworth , Susan Sullivan , David Selby and Mel Ferrer . In addition to young actors at the time such as Lorenzo Lamas , numerous well-known Hollywood stars such as Morgan Fairchild , Leslie Caron , Ursula Andress , Lana Turner , Kim Novak , Gina Lollobrigida , Lauren Hutton , Eddie Albert , Rod Taylor , Cliff Robertson , Cesar Romero and Simon MacCorkindale appeared in guest roles on.

main characters

Angela Gioberti Channing

Angela is the undisputed clan chief and the despotic ruler of Falcon Crest. Her goal is for Falcon Crest to rule all of the Tuscany Valley. In order to achieve this goal, she can use almost any means. Angela repeatedly forges intrigues against the other winegrowers in the valley in order to get her land. She even intrigues against her own family, if only to make it clear to them who is in charge of the family and of Falcon Crest. Her opponents include her nephew Chase and Richard, the son of her late ex-husband.

Chase Gioberti

Chase is Angela's antagonist in the first few seasons. After his father's death, he and his family move to the Tuscany Valley to run the winery he inherited, which is a thorn in the side of his aunt Angela. She begins to fight Chase and his family with devious tricks to drive them out of the valley and reintegrate the land that was formerly part of Falcon Crest. While trying to arrest Angela's daughter Julia, who was convicted as a murderer, he is shot and seriously injured. But he has a fighting spirit and cannot be easily driven away. After his wife Maggie was kidnapped by Jeff Wainwright, an exchange of fire ensues during the liberation, in which Chase is seriously injured and struggles with death for several days. When trying to save his son Kevin and Melissa Agretti after a car accident from the San Francisco docks, he no longer shows up; his body is not found.

Maggie Gioberti Channing

Maggie is Chase's wife and freelance journalist at the beginning of the series. She is and remains a smart woman with a lovable character throughout the series. After Chase's death, she falls in love with Richard, they get married, but the marriage fails. She drowns in an accident in a swimming pool.

Richard Channing

Richard, supposedly the illegitimate son of Angela's ex-husband Douglas, inherits the management of the San Francisco Globe newspaper from his father and moves to San Francisco. An unscrupulous businessman with ties to organized crime, he seeks to take control of the Tuscany Valley wine industry. He is looking for his birth mother and first finds her in Chase's mother, Jaqueline Perrault. However, it later emerges that he is in fact Angela's alleged son who died in childbirth.

Julia Cumson

Julia is Angela's oldest daughter and the mother of Lance. She mainly takes care of the winemaking. Her great love, Tony Cumson (Lance's father), was driven from Falcon Crest by Angela. After killing Carlo Agretti, she goes to prison and, after she goes blind, goes to a monastery in Oregon, and later to Italy.

Lance Cumson

Julia's son and Angela's grandson. He is a playboy and is raised by Angela according to her own ideas from an early age, so that she can later inherit Falcon Crest. He supports his grandmother in every one of her plans. His first wife is Melissa Agretti. He later marries the daughter of a foreman on Falcon Crest, Pilar Ortega.

Melissa Agretti

Melissa owns the Agretti winery, with which the Giobertis have long been enemies, and marries Lance. She faces Angela again and again and tries to replace her as mistress of Falcon Crest. She later marries Cole Gioberti, with whom she already has a child. To get revenge on Angela, she sets fire to the Falcon Crest mansion and is killed in it.

Cole Gioberti

Son of Maggie and Chase. After his first wife dies, he marries Melissa Agretti. After divorcing her and quarreling with his father, he leaves the Gioberti winery and Tuscany Valley and sails to Australia.

Emma Channing

Emma is Angela's second daughter. She is mentally ill and cannot overcome the accidental death of her uncle (Chase's father), which she contributed to. After a stay in the sanatorium, she works for the New San Francisco Globe , of which she owns shares through the death of her father. All of her relationships with men fail; often it is only used by them to get to Falcon Crest.

Chao-Li

Angela's chauffeur and butler. Chao-Li is always at the service of his boss and supports her in all things. He doesn't even shy away from criminal activities when it comes to the wellbeing of his superiors.

Vickie Gioberti

Victoria is the daughter of Maggie and Chase. After her first marriage fails, she leaves Tuscany Valley and goes to New York. She later returns and marries Eric Stavros.

Phillip Erikson

Angela's corrupt lawyer and friend. He later marries Angela and is killed in a plane crash.

Pilot film / precursor

Before the series began filming, a one-hour pilot called The Vintage Years was produced, which has not yet been shown on television. Some roles were played here by other actors. So among other things played Clu Gulager Chase Gioberti and Samantha Eggar his wife Maggie . The central role of Angela Channing was played here by Jane Wyman, albeit with a gray wig.

The plot of the pilot The Vintage Years is largely the same as in the later episode 4 of the first season. However, the character of Julia Cumson is still called Dorcas, and Angela Channing has a son named Richard Channing (played by Michael Swan ), while a character with this name (played by David Selby) only appears in the series in the second season and turns out to be Angela's son later in the series. The role of Angela Channing was originally intended for Barbara Stanwyck , but she was not interested.
