John Saxon (born Carmine Orrico on August 5, 1936 in New York City , † July 25, 2020 in Murfreesboro , Tennessee ) was an American film and television actor .

Life

Saxon was born in Brooklyn , New York in 1936 . At the age of 16, he was discovered by an agent who saw him on the cover of True Romances magazine . He studied acting with Stella Adler . Mid-1950s, Saxon was from the Universal Studios under contract taken out and made his first films, here his Italian-sounding birth name was Carmine Orrico by the stage name John Saxon replaced. With the embodiment of sporty and attractive roles he quickly became popular, he received in 1958 for men over forty a Golden Globe asBest young actor . In the 1960s, however, he contrasted his temporary image as a “heartthrob” with a number of rogue roles.

Although Saxon worked with such well-known directors as Blake Edwards , John Huston and Otto Preminger early on in his career , he never managed to rise to a great film star. He was mostly only seen in supporting roles and in 1967 for the film The Appaloosa was nominated as best supporting actor for another Golden Globe. One of his best known films is The Man with the Death Claw from 1973, in which he co-starred alongside martial arts and film legend Bruce Lee . Here Saxon benefited from his black belt in karate . Saxon played in particular in many westerns ( Southwest to Sonora and Sinola ) as well as crime films ( Per balance murder and Camorra - a bull clears up ). In 1984 he played in the horror classic Nightmare - Murderous Dreams Lt. Donald Thompson, the leading actress' father. He then took on this role in the third part of the film series. In Part 7 he played himself. His other well-known horror films include Jessy - The Staircase to Death (1974) and Dario Argentos Tenebrae (1982).

Saxon was also a frequently booked guest star in US television series, including Bonanza , Smoking Colts , The Streets of San Francisco , Detective Rockford - just give us a call , The Denver Clan or murder is her hobby . He had his own leading television role from 1969 to 1972 in the doctor series The Bold Ones: The New Doctors . Between 1982 and 1988 he played the recurring supporting role of Tony Cumson, the separated husband of Julia Cumson (played by Abby Dalton ) in the series Falcon Crest . In 1987 Saxon made his directorial debut with the low-budget horror film Death House ; it remained his only directorial work. Quentin Tarantino hired him, among other things, for a brief appearance as FBI agent Stanley Chase in From Dusk Till Dawn (1997) and in the CSI episode Grabesstille ( Grave Danger: Part 1 , directed by Tarantino) as a malicious bomb maker. In the 21st century, Saxon mainly acted in smaller independent films and could most recently look back on a film career spanning more than 60 years.

John Saxon has been married three times, most recently to Gloria Martel since 2008, and has one son. The actor died in July 2020 at the age of 83 years at a pneumonia .
