Asphalt cannibals , also asphalt cannibals (original title: Apocalypse domani ) is an Italian - Spanish cannibal film related to the exploitation genre by director Antonio Margheriti from 1980.

action

During the Vietnam War, Captain Norman Hopper and his unit storm a small Viet Cong camp in the jungle in order to free two imprisoned American comrades. The prisoners, Charlie Bukowski and Tom Thompson, two childhood friends of Hoppers, have become infected with a virus that triggers cannibalistic instincts in them . The unsuspecting Hopper is bitten in the forearm by Tom during the rescue operation. From now on he carries the virus unsuspectingly.

Back in the United States , the two infected Vietnam veterans are admitted to a psychiatric clinic , where they have been treated unsuccessfully for years. One day Charlie manages to escape from the institution and phone his former boss, Hopper. The married Hopper, who has suffered from nightmares in connection with the bite attack since that military campaign and which triggered an unwanted and therefore medicated longing for human flesh, abruptly interrupts the phone call. At the same time, the former commanding officer gives in to his increasing urges and bites his underage neighbor Mary.

Meanwhile, Bukowski seems to have his disease under control at first. But he soon relapses and attacks a young woman, then escapes into an empty supermarket, where he holed up, shoots two people and then engages in a firefight with the police. The alarmed Hopper succeeds in front of his wife, a reporter, to persuade the surrounded Bukowski to give up and to bring him back into the closed institution. Once there, Bukowski and his war comrade Tom attack the nurse Helen, who is unknowingly infected. The treating doctors around Dr. Mendez are stunned because they believed they could successfully treat cannibalism with drugs. Soon the incidents with a cannibalistic background increase and the virus spreads over the big city.

Meanwhile, the cannibal mutated nurse Helen frees the two tied soldiers Charlie and Tom. In the hospital, Norman Hopper joins the trio, who also develop symptoms of the virus, so that he takes their side. Together they flee into the city's sewer system, where the quartet is arrested by the police.

There are several bloody exchanges of fire, as a result of which Charlie and Tom are fatally injured in addition to Helen, only Hopper manages to escape from the police, slightly injured. At the end of the film, Hopper goes to his family home, where he meets Dr. Shoots Phil Mendez, who previously infected his wife. Then he kills his wife and himself. In one of the last shots you see Hopper's neighbors, the underage Mary and her younger brother, who are chewing on their previously killed aunt, part of which you can see sticking out of the refrigerator.

Reviews

"Crude zombie blend with illogical action, which abuses the American Vietnam trauma for speculative brutality."
