Cannibal movie

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cannibal film is a film genre from the field of exploitation and splatter films , with influences from horror , adventure and sometimes sex films .

Most of the films produced by Italian filmmakers in the late 1970s and early 1980s also reached their peak during this period. Films of this direction mostly deal with primeval indigenous peoples from South American and Asian regions who come into contact with civilization . Often an attempt is made to question the notion of apparently civilized and apparently uncivilized cultures, which is illustrated by the unnobular motives and actions of the supposedly civilized intruders, who often - but not always - disrupt the social structure of the local societies willfully and out of self-interest. In the context of the attempt to abolish supposedly civilized and uncivilized cultures, connections to the Mondogenre in the style of Gualtiero Jacopetti and Franco Prosperi can be drawn. Another focus of many films in the genre is the (supposedly) anthropological representation of primeval social associations and the different forms and motivations for cannibalistic acts. However, there are also innumerable films within the genre that do without those socially critical approaches. Because of the frequent use of real animal kills, the genre was sometimes under criticism. In a broader sense, films in which cannibalism plays a central role are often referred to as cannibal films (for example Cannibal! The Musical or Man-Eater ).

history

The first film to be classified in this genre was Il paese del sesso selvaggio (English title Mondo Cannibale ) by Umberto Lenzi in 1972 . It was about a photographer who was kidnapped by a tribe in the Burmese jungle and then embroiled in a war with a neighboring cannibal tribe. Although this film has not yet triggered a wave of cannibal films, it was still considered the main inspiration of Ultimo mondo cannibale (English title Mondo Cannibale, Part 2 - The Bird Man ) by Ruggero Deodato from 1977 , which was then followed by a number of other films of this type . The best-known and most successful cannibal film was shot in 1980 with Deodatos Cannibal Holocaust (Eng. Title Naked and mangled, or Cannibal Holocaust) . Umberto Lenzi's Cannibal Ferox (German title Die Rache der Kannibalen) was also very successful a year later . Other important directors of the genre are Jess Franco ( Mondo Cannibale 3 1980) and Joe D'Amato ( Emanuelle e gli ultimi cannibali (English title, among other things. Naked among cannibals ) 1977 ), both of which have increased the genre with their films by a considerable proportion of Sex scenes, both softcore and partly hardcore, expanded. At the beginning of the 80s the wave of cannibal films ebbed and by the beginning of the 1990s had practically disappeared completely. The best-known actors of the genre include Robert Kerman , Ivan Rassimov and Me Me Lai , who each appeared in three films of the genre.

Modern representatives of cannibal films include, for example, Roter Drache , Hannibal and Hannibal Rising . However, cannibalism is seen here more as a motif or theme. They are quite different from the film genre. Isle of the Damned , an American independent production, pays homage to the cannibal film of the 1970s. The film was confiscated in August 2012 . The German horror film Rohtenburg , which was temporarily banned by a court, by director Martin Weisz from 2006 is based on the true story of the criminal case involving the cannibalist sex offender Armin Meiwes .
