Cannibal! The Musical is an American musical film that Trey Parker and Matt Stone wrote and directed while studying at the University of Colorado at Boulder .
The film, with its black humor, is loosely based on the true story of Alfred Packer , America's only convicted cannibal, particularly his journey from Utah to Colorado, on which his five travel companions (Shannon Bell, George Noon, James Humphrey, Israel Swan and Frank Miller) too Deaths came and were partly eaten by packers. Parker plays the role of Packer, his permanent collaborator Matt Stone that of James Humphrey and experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage George Noon's father.
In contrast to the gruesome content of the musical are its happy songs, all composed by Parker, including "Let's Build a Snowman", "On Top of You", "Hang the Bastard" and "Shpadoinkle". The latter is obviously a parody of the song "Oh, What a Beautiful Morning" from the Rodgers & Hammerstein Musical Oklahoma!
The film was originally supposed to be called " Alfred Packer: The Musical " in 1993 , but was not released until 1996 . When Troma Studios added the film to their programming, they named it “ Cannibal! The Musical ”because they feared that not enough people outside of Colorado would know who Alfred Packer was. Parker's and Stone's satirical cartoon South Park premiered a year later.
