Stan Brakhage

James Stanley "Stan" Brakhage (born January 14, 1933 in Kansas City , Missouri , † March 9, 2003 in Victoria , British Columbia , Canada ) was an American film director .

Stan Brakhage was born in a home for unwanted pregnant women and grew up with adoptive parents. He attended Dartmouth College . He was kicked out in 1952, but graduated from college in 1955. Between 1952 and 2003 Brakhage made around 380 films, mostly short films . The running lengths of his films varied from nine seconds to four hours. Most of his experimental films were rarely seen outside of the experimental or short film scene for a long time, but are now published online and on DVD.

Brakhage was a professor of film at the University of Colorado at Boulder . His first wife Jane often appeared as an actress in his films, a few times she was also involved in other positions - for example as a camerawoman. Brakhage himself was also a frequent cameraman and film editor , and a rare scriptwriter and producer of his films.

In 1972, Stan Brakhage took part in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Film Show: New American Cinema department .
