action

In the Mexican-American War , a US lieutenant named Boyd is celebrated as a hero for single-handedly conquering an enemy camp, despite the fact that he had previously been cowardly hiding while his unit was slaughtered. After being promoted to captain, he was transferred to a fort in the Sierra Nevada as a punishment.

After a short time in the fort, a stranger arrives who introduces himself as Colqhoun and tells a story that he accompanied a trek that got lost on the way to the Pacific and, after a long period of food shortage, became cannibalized. The leader, a certain Colonel Ives, is described by Colqhoun as a monster because he is said to have killed the others, but Colqhoun was still able to escape. The fort's crew set out to look for potential survivors, but are warned by an Indian member of the crew by telling them the legend of the wendigo , an Indian demon that eats human flesh to get stronger.

When they arrive at the cave to which they were led, the troops realize that they have fallen into a trap and that Colqhoun is in truth the remaining Colonel. This, however, kills all men and their commanders with ruse, except for Captain Boyd, who can escape and hide. In the process, however, he injured himself badly and in his predicament is forced to eat the meat of a dead comrade next to him.

Later Boyd drags himself back to the camp, where no one believes him, as all evidence of the crimes has disappeared at once. A new commander is sent into the fort, who is immediately recognized by Boyd as Colqhoun, but who now calls himself Colonel Ives and pretends not to know anything. After a while more members of the crew are killed, and the captured Boyd has to watch helplessly as the last man is murdered by the presumed dead commander who, it turns out, was fed human flesh by Ives so that he could survive.

Ives now tells Boyd about the healing and strengthening effects of human flesh, which Boyd himself had already experienced when he was left injured in the forest. Together with the commanding officer and Boyd, all three Wendigowak, he wants to use the fort as a trap for passers-by to take care of himself. To convince him, Ives wounds Boyd and again forces him to eat human flesh to survive.

The commander is later convinced by the now released Boyd not to continue with the gruesome plan and to help him defeat Ives. Sorry about life as a cannibal, however, the commander asks Boyd to kill him, which Boyd then does. Ives and Boyd then fight each other, seriously injure each other and lie dying. Ives says to Boyd, should he die before him, he would eat him and just carry on. But Boyd survives Ives and even resists the urge to eat the dead and dies a little later, putting an end to the ghost.

At the end you can see an officer searching the empty fort, where he finds the human stew that Ives made in the kitchen and tries it.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films wrote: "A failed horror film that takes back the abysmal through humorous elements and repeatedly undermines the monstrous moods of the visual level through its musical design."
