Antonia Jane Bird (born May 27, 1951 in Kensington , London , † October 24, 2013 in London) was a British film director and film producer who directed several well-known movies in the 1990s, including The Priest , Mad Love , Face and Ravenous - eat or die .

life and career

Antonia Bird was born in 1951 in London to an actor. The mother had to contribute to the irregular income of her husband with additional income - so Antonia grew up mostly in poor conditions. At the age of 16 her desire to become an actress was kindled and so she took two years of acting lessons at the Coventry Repertory Theater, but decided after her training to change direction to directing. Bird worked as a theater director at London's National Theater and later, for six years, as Resident Director at the Royal Court Theater in London, Britain's premier theater for new playwrights. She then took over the artistic direction at Theater Upstairs . During this time Bird directed plays by Hanif Kureishi , Jim Cartwright , and Trevor Griffiths and worked with actors such as Ian McKellen , Bob Hoskins and Ben Elton .

In the mid-1980s she began working as a director for various British series such as EastEnders , Casualty and South of the Border. In 1994 she shot the film The Priest with Linus Roache in the lead role, her first own feature film. In 1995 she directed the drama Mad Love, starring Chris O'Donnell and Drew Barrymore . In 1997 the thriller Face with Robert Carlyle was created . In 1999 she directed the horror drama Ravenous - eat or die . In the 2000s, Bird returned to television directing. In the last phase of her life, she directed various episodes of the television series The Village . For her film and television work she has received various festival prizes and BAFTA awards in her career .

Since the early 2000s, Bird has also been active as a film and television producer several times, including for the productions Rehab , Faith and the drama Syn Babilonu with Shazada Hussein .

Antonia Bird died on October 24, 2013 after a long illness at the age of 62 in her hometown of London.
