action

Greg Pilkington, a young priest, is starting his first job in a small parish in a poorer part of Liverpool . Here he meets the elder parish priest Matthew Thomas. Greg is extremely conservative with very strict views, which also leads to conflicts with Matthew Thomas, who has had a secret relationship with his housekeeper Maria Kerrigan for years. The young priest shows no understanding for this love. But Greg's feelings also get mixed up when he falls in love with the young Graham. Greg, who was so self-assured at the beginning, suddenly feels helpless. This helplessness is intensified when 14-year-old Lisa confesses to him that her father has been sexually abused. His world finally collapses when he is caught by the police in a car having sex with Graham. His homosexuality is now public. The young priest is already facing the end of his priestly life. However, Matthew Thomas can persuade him to come back to his ward. The two priests preside over the Holy Mass together. When Greg also hands out Holy Communion, the congregation ignores him. Only Lisa stands by him and demonstrates this by receiving Holy Communion from him.

Reviews

“The film, supported by a multi-layered script, combines a realistic description of the milieu with dramatically exaggerated climaxes, while maintaining the necessary openness that provides impetus not only for discussing the role of the priest, but also for general Christian topics such as the search for God and the sacraments , Guilt, reconciliation. "
