Robert Carlyle , OBE (born April 14, 1961 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a Scottish actor .

life and career

Robert Carlyle grew up in Maryhill, Glasgow. When he was four years old, his mother left the family. He was raised by his father, Joseph Carlyle. At the age of 21 he decided to take acting classes at the Glasgow Arts Center .

In Great Britain, Carlyle became known to a wider public when he played a murderer with great acting intensity in an episode of the television series Just In Case Fitz (Cracker) in 1993 . The journalist Tim Schleider writes in his review of the episode in which Carlyle plays: “Although it is a murder scene that cannot really be surpassed in terms of horror, you still sit spellbound in front of the television. Robert Carlyle and Christopher Eccleston take the art of acting to such extremes that you could watch the scene over and over - like a painting on the wall. "

After the first successful appearances in television productions, Carlyle received many movie roles. In Trainspotting, he played the role of Begbie . In all or nothing he played the part of a group of unemployed men who want to make a living as a striptease group.

From then on Carlyle took on evil roles again and again. In the 19th James Bond film The World Is Not Enough , he played the mad terrorist Renard . In Hitler - Rise of Evil , he played Adolf Hitler . In Eragon - The Legacy of the Dragon Riders , he portrayed the evil shadow Durza . In 2008, he starred in the TV series 24 , 24: Redemption at the side of Kiefer Sutherland .

At the beginning of February 2009, Carlyle took on the leading role in the series Stargate Universe as Dr. Nicholas Rush . On November 13, 2010, he won the Gemini Award in Toronto for Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role for this role in episode 14 The Genetic Code (Human) of the first season.

In 2002, Carlyle made an appearance in the music video for Little by Little by the British musical group Oasis .

Between 2011 and 2018 he played the role of Rumpelstiltskin in the US series Once Upon a Time .

Working method

Carlyle is known for taking on a lot for the credibility of his characters and sometimes even changing his appearance and everyday life. In order to credibly portray the role of the gangster in Antonia Bird's film Face , he lived for some time in London's East End , the location of the film, before shooting began . For his role as a bus driver in the film Carla's Song by Ken Loach , he completed a special course on passenger transport in a typical Glasgow Leyland Atlantean bus and received his passenger service vehicle license (PSV license).

Personal

Carlyle has been married since 1997. He and his wife have a daughter (* 2002) and two sons (* 2004 and 2006). The family lives in Scotland .
