Part one describes the experiences of Queen Mary Queen of Scots from her arrival in Scotland after her previous spouse, the King of France, until she was imprisoned at the instigation of her rivals. The second part deals with the life of her son, James I of Scotland and England, while Mary Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned at the time, only appears marginally. A thematic focus of the second part is the attack attempt by Guy Fawkes .
