Gillies MacKinnon

Gillies MacKinnon (born January 8, 1948 in Glasgow , Scotland ) is a British director and screenwriter . He became internationally known through the films The Playboys , The Random Dad , Small Faces , Marrakech and A House in Ireland .

life and career

Gillies MacKinnon, born in Glasgow in 1948 , first worked as an art teacher and professional caricaturist after studying wall painting at the Glasgow School of Art . He then studied at the National Film and Television School from 1983 to 1986 to pursue a career in the film industry. His graduation film Passing Glory premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 1986 and won first prize there.

He finally made his television film debut in 1989 with the adventure drama Conquest of the South Pole . In 1992 MacKinnon then directed the romantic drama The Playboys with Albert Finney and Aidan Quinn in the leading roles, his first feature film. In 1994 he shot the comedy The Random Dad with the American actor Steve Martin . In 1996 he had one of his greatest international successes with the award-winning teen drama Small Faces . As a cameraman he hired John de Borman , with whom he would later shoot four more feature films. In 1998 the film drama Marrakech was made with the young Kate Winslet in the female lead, who had just risen to international star a year earlier with the film epic Titanic . In 2002 MacKinnon filmed two materials. On the one hand the crime film Hunt for Retribution with the cast Jonny Lee Miller and Andy Serkis , on the other hand the drama A Child of Sadness with Harry Eden , Molly Parker and David Wenham in the leading roles. In 2005 he directed the romantic drama A House in Ireland . It played Olivia Williams , Andie MacDowell and Iain Glen .

Since 2007 MacKinnon has worked exclusively for television films and episodes of well-known television series, which he had shot at irregular intervals in the 1990s.

MacKinnon lives in Stroud Green, north London. Gillies MacKinnon is the brother of screenwriter Billy MacKinnon .
