Albert Finney

Albert Finney (born May 9, 1936 in Salford , Lancashire , England , † February 7, 2019 in London ) was a British actor and producer . Finney has been one of the most prominent British character actors since the 1960s .

Life

Albert Finney attended Salford Grammar School and then studied in London at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art . Finney made his first appearance at the Birmingham Repertory Theater . In 1958 he moved back to London. In 1959 he played classical roles in the Shakespeare plays Midsummer Night's Dream , Othello and King Lear with the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon . But it wasn't until the comedy Lillywhite Boys that he became a well-known actor. In the film adaptation of Der Komödiant based on the play The Entertainer by John Osborne Finney was first seen on the screen.

Finney had another success in 1960 with Billy Liar , directed by Lindsay Anderson at the Cambridge Theater in London's West End . From then on he worked as an actor and theater director . 1961 he was offered the lead role in the epic film Lawrence of Arabia by David Lean , which he refused. Peter O'Toole , who took on the role afterwards, became a movie star through her. Finney became known to a worldwide audience for his portrayal of the title role in Tony Richardson's film Tom Jones - Between the Bed and the Gallows , for which he received nominations for an Oscar , for the British Film Academy Award and for a Golden Globe Award for Best Young Actor .

With the world star Audrey Hepburn he played in two on the same path in 1966 . The film Charlie Bubbles - a successful dud remained Finney's only job as a film director and was the first film by his production company Memorial Enterprises Productions , which he had founded together with Michael Medwin in 1965. The film was also a competition entry at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1968 .

For his portrayal of the Belgian private detective Hercule Poirot in the Agatha Christie filming Murder on the Orient Express , directed by Sidney Lumet , Finney was awarded an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. In 2000 he starred opposite Julia Roberts in Erin Brockovich for the first time, directed by Steven Soderbergh. In the following years he was seen repeatedly in films by this director in smaller roles. In 2003 he received a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the television feature The Gathering Storm . He played his last film role in 2012 as the gamekeeper Kincade in the James Bond film Skyfall .

Finney was married from 1957 to 1961 with the British actress and singer Jane Wenham (1927-2018), with whom he had a son, and from 1970 to 1978 with the French actress Anouk Aimée , who left him in 1975 for Ryan O'Neal . He was married to Pene Delmage from 2006 until his death. He died in February 2019 at the age of 82 after a brief illness.
