The Bourne Legacy (Original Title: The Bourne Legacy ) is a 2012 American action thriller by Tony Gilroy . Jeremy Renner , Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton played the leading roles .

The film is the fourth part of the Bourne film series , which is based on the character of Jason Bourne invented by Robert Ludlum . The character no longer appears in the film because the actor Matt Damon was not available for the fourth part. This time Tony Gilroy took over the direction of Paul Greengrass . Gilroy had worked on the scripts of all three predecessors.

It takes its title from Eric Van Lustbader 's novel of the same name , but the plot differs significantly from the original.

action

Aaron Cross is participating in a secret government project, codenamed Operation Outcome , that enables soldiers to take blue and green pills to improve their physical and mental abilities. In this context, he is completing special training in Alaska . In a remote hut he meets another participant in the government project, who is only named number 3 .

Meanwhile, the covert Operations Blackbriar and Operation Treadstone are made public (see The Bourne Ultimatum - Action ). The FBI and a parliamentary committee question various operatives and the director of the CIA , Ezra Kramer. Kramer turns to Mark Turso, who then contacts Eric Byer. Byer now finds a video on the streaming platform YouTube showing a public meeting between Treadstone's medical directors, Dr. Albert Hirsch, and Outcome, Dr. Hilcott, shows. In order to prevent the public investigation of Treadstone from undermining the scientific findings of the Outcome Program, Byer decides to end the operation for now and have all agents eliminated, as the next generation of superagents from the LARX program are already at an early stage Phase stand.

Byer sends a Predator drone to Alaska to kill Agent "Number 3" and Cross (Number 5). However, Cross hears the approaching drone and is able to leave the hut shortly before the impact of the launched missile. Number 3 dies in the explosion. The drone registers a tracking device implanted in Cross, but Cross can destroy the aircraft before a second approach with his sniper rifle . Cross then removes the tracking device from his body and feeds it to a wolf, who is killed by a second drone shortly afterwards. Byer therefore assumes that Cross is also dead. Byer uses triangular, yellow poison pills to kill all other outcome agents. Treadstone's medical director, Dr. Albert Hirsch, dies of a "heart attack" shortly before his testimony in the US Senate, and in the outcome laboratory the scientist Dr. Donald Foite, who was likely rigged with pills from the same research project, put all the other members of the team in a rampage. When the security forces break in, he commits suicide. The only survivor is Dr. Marta Shearing. After a brief interrogation by the police, she finds herself in her house. She suspects that the rampage could be induced by means that are produced in her laboratory for programming neural behavioral structures.

Shortly thereafter, Shearing is visited by CIA agents in her home. They plan to fabricate their suicide after making sure that Shearing has not spoken to anyone other than the police about the incident. This is where the two storylines of Shearing and Cross come together. Just before Shearing can be killed, Cross appears and saves her by killing all of the agents. Cross knew Shearing from his regular examinations and told Dr. Experience foites. He convinces Shearing to help him. Cross learns from her that he no longer needs the green pills he took to improve physical performance. His body was infected with the active virus without his knowledge. It was only to control him that he was made to believe that he still needed the green pills. However, he must continue to take the blue pills that keep his mental abilities at a high level. Since these blue pills are produced in Manila , both travel to the Philippines under false identities . There they want to infect Cross with the active virus in order to make him independent of the blue pills. On the trip, Cross reveals that his real name, Kenneth J. Kitsom, and he officially fell in the Iraq war .

Meanwhile, Byer has taken up the trail of Cross and Shearing again and instructs the super soldier LARX-3 to kill both of them. In the meantime, the two fugitives have gained access to the production facility and found the virus strains there that are necessary for the production of the blue pills that increase mental abilities. Shearing squirts this cross, who then gets a severe fever. From now on he no longer needs pills, neither the green ones, which increase his physical abilities, nor the blue ones, which increase his mental abilities. They can escape the security forces alerted by telephone from America at the last moment.

Shearing organizes a hotel room for himself and Cross. Cross tells Shearing to take his money and various passports and to disappear. You've done enough for him. After that he falls into delirium.

The following morning, the hotel where both of them were hiding was surrounded by the police. Shearing, who is fetching medication, warns Cross at the last minute so that he can escape the building. Shearing is now being pursued himself; To save her, Cross, who has since recovered, kills some police officers. After the two shake off the police, they are still being chased by LARX-3. Shearing and Cross engage in a wild chase with him on a motorcycle. At the end of the line, Shearing kicks LARX-3's motorcycle, causing the LARX-3 to hit a concrete pillar and apparently fatally injured.

Shearing seeks help from a Filipino boat operator. In the next scene, Shearing and Cross are sailing across the sea on a boat. The skipper wears a security guards watch that Cross had stolen. Cross looks at a map. When Shearing asks if they were lost, he says no. She says, “I was hoping we were lost.” He smiles and rolls the card up.

production

The fourth installment in the Bourne series was produced under the working title Marcher by Universal Pictures with an estimated budget of $ 125 million.

Emergence

Universal originally wanted to close the Bourne series with The Bourne Ultimatum . In October 2008, however, the studio announced that after the financial success of the third part, another sequel would be planned.

George Nolfi , the second screenwriter of Das Bourne Ultimatum , was given the task of writing the script for the fourth part, but was not supposed to refer to Robert Ludlum's works. Joshua Zetumer was commissioned to write a screenplay at the same time, as Nolfi was employed as a director (also screenplay and production) for the sci-fi thriller The Plan .

In June 2010 it was announced that Tony Gilroy , the co-writer of the three previous Bourne scripts, would be writing the script for the fourth film with his brother Dan Gilroy and that the film would be released in 2012. Tony Gilroy from Los Angeles and his brother Don from New York worked on the script. In October 2010, Universal announced the release date for The Bourne Legacy , naming August 10, 2012 as its premiere date . Tony Gilroy was eventually hired to direct the film and announced that Jason Bourne would not appear in the fourth part.

Tony Gilroy said in an interview that he was unaware of the agreements between Universal, Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass on the project. He went on to say that Matt Damon aka Jason Bourne cannot be replaced as it is not James Bond . The director didn't know how to turn the story with only Aaron Cross and without Jason Bourne . After viewing Das Bourne Ultimatum one more time , Gilroy called his brother Dan and said the Legacy must be a much bigger conspiracy than the ultimatum. The films overlap, but only for 15 minutes at the beginning of the film.

occupation

Matt Damon , who should get back the lead role of Jason Bourne , had announced in November 2009 that no script had been approved and he himself hoped that the shooting would take place at the earliest in mid-2011. Months later, Damon canceled due to artistic differences after Paul Greengrass announced in November 2010 that he would not be returning as a director. In January 2010, Damon said there would likely be a sequel with a different lead actor and director. Tony Gilroy has now cast a number of actors to star Aaron Cross . After a few months of unsuccessful searches, Gilroy and producer Frank Marshall gave the role to Jeremy Renner .

Locations

The locations were visited by Tony Gilroy while the script was being written.

The majority of the film takes place around and in Washington, DC , the recordings were only made in the establishing shots . Further recordings were made at the Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens , New York City . The old house where Marta lived is in the Hudson area of New York and was built in 1815. The house was only used for the interior shots. Previously, Kevin Thompson, the production designer, with his team and director Gilroy toured 150 houses before choosing this house. The exterior shots of the house were shot in Staten Island . Other locations that were used as filming locations in New York were JFK Airport , the New York Times printing plant in Queens, Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan and Old Westbury on Long Island . After twelve weeks of shooting in New York, the film team traveled to Kananaskis Country , Canada , to shoot the Alaska scenes there in the Rocky Mountains .

The film was shot for two days in Manila , Philippines . The factory photos were taken in the New York Times print shop. In addition, photos were taken on the coast of El Nido . The subway footage was filmed at Ogeum Station in Seoul , South Korea . The Seoul Subway Line 3 was used as a venue.

criticism

"Fast-paced action thriller about betrayal, conspiracy and lost identity as solid genre entertainment, whereby the conspiracy scenario is described as a morally derailing combination of economic-institutional structures and technical possibilities."

“Open heart surgery successful, patient is breathing! The 'Bourne' film franchise is alive without superstar Matt Damon. Some prior knowledge from the first three parts is certainly helpful, but 'The Bourne Legacy' is convincing as an espionage action thriller with an ambitious, complex experimental set-up and its own accents. "

“But what starts out exciting and critical of the secret service, Gilroy (after all, he also staged the masterpieces ' Michael Clayton ' and ' Duplicity ') gets completely out of hand in the second half. The skillfully built tension is then completely drowned in a sea of stupid, because physically impossible, action stunts and the increasingly abstruse story. So we are looking forward to the end here too, but more likely to be able to finally leave the cinema. "

“Overall, The Bourne Legacy isn't a bad movie. The trio Renner / Weisz / Norton is convincing in their respective roles, whereby Renner should be emphasized again. With him, the film team achieved a real stroke of luck. This way you can get over the wobbly camera that is used excessively and also the loose ends that run through the film and the not exactly complex story, thanks to its representation, fade into the background. "

- Moviereporter

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating "valuable".

continuation

The film production company Universal Pictures confirmed shortly after the publication of The Bourne Legacy that further films in the Bourne series are planned. Justin Lin was hired as a director . For the first time, the script for a Bourne film is not written by Tony Gilroy . Instead, Andrew Baldwin acts as the screenwriter. In June 2014, Universal Pictures announced that the fifth film will not be released in US theaters until July 15, 2016, rather than as originally planned in August 2015. Finally, in July, Jason Bourne appeared , directed by Paul Greengrass.

Trivia

The title does not correspond to the rules of German spelling, correct would be “Das Bourne-Vermächtnis”.
