It stars Kristen Stewart , Charlize Theron and Chris Hemsworth . Snow White and the Huntsman was produced by Roth Films and is distributed by Universal Pictures .

action

In a flashback, the hunter, Eric, “the Huntsman” tells of a time in the dead of winter when the Queen of the Kingdom saw a rose in her garden that bloomed despite the cold. When she tried to touch the rose, it stabbed herself and three drops of blood fell into the white snow. The queen wished for a child with lips red as blood, skin white as snow, hair black as raven's wings and with the same strong will as the rose, which wanted to bloom in spite of the winter. Her wish came true, and so the queen gave birth to a daughter who she named Snow White.

Years later, Snow White grows up as the daughter of King Magnus and Queen Eleanor and is friends with the son of Duke Hammond, William. When Eleanor dies, the king is deeply hit, and shortly afterwards, taking advantage of his weakness, a dark army invades the country. The king gathers his troops, defeats the peculiar glass fighters and frees their supposed prisoner, Ravenna. He is seized by her beauty and the very next day Magnus marries Ravenna, who is crowned queen. However, she turns out to be a powerful sorceress and mistress of the dark army, and on her wedding night Ravenna kills the king and takes power in the kingdom. When Ravenna's troops take the castle, the loyal Duke Hammond tries to bring the king's daughter and William to safety, but Snow White is captured by Ravenna's brother and closest confidante Finn. The princess is incarcerated while Hammond and some of the survivors escape. Ravenna asks her magic mirror who is the most beautiful in the whole land and, as always, receives the answer she desires.

In the course of the following years, under the influence of Ravenna, the kingdom decays and all life withers. In order to remain beautiful and powerful herself, the queen sucks vampire-like life energy from women who threaten to exceed her in beauty. Fifteen years later, however, Ravenna feels that her strength is weakening, and she learns from the mirror that the still trapped Snow White is now destined to surpass her in beauty. Der Spiegel also explains to Ravenna that Snow White could mean both her downfall and her salvation. For if she ate the innocent girl's heart, her powers would be preserved forever and she would be immortal. Ravenna orders Finn to bring her Snow White, but she injures him with a nail and escapes through the drainage channel from the castle and into the dark forest. While the princess wanders through the forest, the hunter Eric picks up her trail. Together with Finn and a group of warriors, he pursues them. The Huntsman, grieving for his wife Sarah, was forced to hunt by Ravenna and seduced with the promise of resuscitation to his wife. At first he enters the dark forest alone, not knowing the identity of his prey.

The Huntsman quickly catches up with Snow White, who tries desperately to convince him that Ravenna will betray him too. After all, the princess offers gold to the hunter if he brings her to Duke Hammond's castle. Eric doubts, and when Finn surprises the two, he lets himself be tempted to remark that Ravenna cannot raise the dead either. This convinces Eric to help the escapist, and after they escape their captors, he promises her to accompany them. In the meantime, Duke Hammond and William learn from a loyal lover that the king's daughter is still alive and has fled into the Dark Forest. William stands up against his hesitant father, disguises himself and, unrecognized, joins Finn's troop as archers in order to find and protect the princess. On the way to Hammond's castle, the hunter shows Snow White how she can defend herself, despite her small size, by first deflecting a knife and then stabbing the attacker herself. When they finally reach the edge of the dark forest, they are attacked by a troll on a bridge. The Huntsman tries to fight the overpowering creature, but is quickly knocked out. Before the troll can kill him, Snow White jumps in between and looks at the troll. Both stare at each other when the Huntsman wakes up again. The troll is soothed by the sight of the beautiful Snow White and withdraws. The Huntsman and Snow White continue to flee through a swamp and find refuge for the night in a village where all women have scars on their faces. In this way, the inhabitants of Ravenna try to escape the constant search for beautiful girls. There, Eric learns from one of the women who his companion really is and leaves the village in the middle of the night, driven by self-doubt and the desire not to put the girl in danger any further through his unreliability. However, when the village is attacked and set on fire by Finn's troops, he turns back and saves the life of the princess again while the women flee across the river in boats.

In the castle, Ravenna bathes in milk and remembers her childhood. When her village was attacked by robbers, her mother cast a spell on Ravenna by mixing three drops of the child's blood with milk and giving it to her to drink. She warned Ravenna that her beauty would give her power, but that the magic sealed by her "purest blood" could be broken by such. When Ravenna and Finn are kidnapped as hostages, the mother yells after her children, "Avenge us!", Which burns itself deeply into Ravenna and should determine their lives.

When the Huntsman and the princess rest in the forest, he gives her his word that he will accompany them to the Duke's castle. Suddenly they are attacked and captured by a small group of eight dwarfs . The group, consisting of Muir, Beith, Gorth, Coll, Duir, Quert, Nion and Gus, harbor old grudges against the Huntsman and therefore want to kill their prisoners. However, the blind Muir has a premonition that the captured girl is the only person who can put an end to Ravenna and her reign of terror. Finally, the dwarfs bring Snow White and the hunter to safety deep in the forest in the home of the fairies. In the night to come, the dwarves tell the princess about their past and how they once digged for gold in the mountains. When they returned from the mines after a long time, they found that Ravenna had killed all of her brothers in the same month when she took power in the kingdom. Now they are alone and the pitiful remnant of a once proud people. Snow White dances around the campfire with Gus, while the other dwarfs are astonished to notice that since meeting the girl, their symptoms have decreased and they feel better. Meanwhile, the Huntsman begins to wonder whether he is really only accompanying Snow White for the gold, or whether he is doing much more than protecting her.

The next morning two fairies wake Snow White and lead them to a sacred clearing. The rest of the group wakes up and quietly follows her. Snow White is blessed by a great white stag when Muir announces that she is the one who will put an end to Ravenna's dark rule. At that moment they are attacked by Finn and his men. While Gus dies defending the king's daughter, the Huntsman Finn threatens to be defeated. When the latter reveals to him that it was he who killed his wife at the time, Eric Finn is able to impale Finn on a jagged tree stump in one last rearing up. The fatally wounded Finn begs his sister for rescue, but Ravenna's strength is already beginning to wane and she fears the complete loss of her beauty and youth. She whispers, “Forgive me, brother!” And lets him die. As the dwarves mourn Gus, they also remember what noble men they once were. So they agree to follow Snow White and accompany them to the castle. During the night, the group, now complemented by William, rests again in the forest.

Ravenna, upset and angry about Finn's death, transforms into an image of William and joins Snow White's tour group the next morning. In a conversation about their two childhoods, Snow White seduces them into eating a poisoned apple. The princess gasps for air and falls to the floor when Ravenna confesses that Snow White is both her only weakness and her eternal salvation. Only her blood is able to undo the spell that produced Ravenna's powers. When the Dark Queen could finally consume Snow White's heart, she would make it immortal. As she is about to apply the knife, the Huntsman and William appear and force Ravenna to flee, which turns into a cloud of ravens. Snow White's companions watch helplessly as the princess falls into a death-like sleep. Even a kiss from Williams doesn't change anything, but a tear falls from her face unnoticed. The group still wants to keep their promise and brings Snow White to Hammond's castle, where she is laid out.

While the Duke and his allies mourn, the Huntsman keeps watch over Snow White during the night and speaks to the supposedly dead woman. He tells her about his life, his participation in wars, and how his wife Sarah finally made him a better person through her love. However, after she died while he was away and on the hunt, he turned back into his old self and gave himself up lost until he finally met Snow White. Eric confesses to her that she reminds him of his wife because she has the same strong will and a compassionate heart, and that through her he has become the man he had become through Sarah. He asks Snow White to forgive him for not being able to protect her better, and kisses her goodbye. A tear drips from his nose onto Snow White's face. When he leaves, it runs down her cheek and falls off her face. This broke Ravenna's spell. Shortly afterwards the king's daughter wakes up and steps outside in front of the assembled people. In a speech to Hammond and his followers, Snow White convinces them that she alone can kill Ravenna, and starts the battle for their inheritance.

The following day, Snow White rides at the head of their troops towards the royal castle, while the dwarves enter the castle through the sewer to open the gate for the oncoming army. A battle breaks out in the castle as Snow White searches for Ravenna. When the two finally meet in the throne room, Ravenna is clearly superior to the princess in strength, while the Snow White are attacked and stopped by Ravenna's dark glass warriors to the aid of hurrying people. Ravenna knocks Snow White down and thinks she is victorious. When she finally wants to kill Snow White with her knife, she can intercept the dagger and push her own knife into the heart of the Dark Queen. Three drops of blood fall on Snow White's armor. The incredulous, mortally wounded Ravenna falls to the ground and creeps fearfully to her beloved mirror, where her beauty fades and she transforms into an old woman. As she dies, Snow White speaks compassionately to her: "You cannot have my heart."

With Ravenna's death, her dark army dissolves and the battle is won. Snow White is crowned queen and the kingdom comes back to its former glory. During the coronation, William and the dwarves stand by Snow White's side. When her gaze sweeps over her subjects, he pauses on the Huntsman and they smile at each other.

criticism

Snow White and the Huntsman is by no means perfect: Nevertheless, the film is an audiovisual force and is able to convey an exciting story and impress the audience with great images. It's also nice that at the end there is even some courage to be open. As an action fantasy film, the whole thing is convincing and is worth a visit to the cinema simply because of the staging. "

“Director Rupert Sanders' strengths also lie in the image compositions, who is making his feature film debut with Snow White and the Huntsman and is experienced in commercials. Effects and eye-catching production design complement each other to create lush fairy-tale forests that couldn't be more different. […] Snow White and the Huntsman still offers great entertainment value . "

Snow White and the Huntsman has epic rhythm. The film digresses into episodes and reports on foreign countries and people. It is broad, but narrated in images that are often archetypal expressive and free of concern for credibility. If Snow White jumps into the thundering water from a considerable height while escaping, comes out alive against all odds and then meets a white stallion who was just waiting for her, then that could seem extremely ridiculous - but in the context of these elementary events it has symbolic force. ... And how often do fantasy films throw themselves on the love story in order to offer the girls something - here the topic of love is boldly dispensed with and any psychology in general that goes beyond the simplest motivations. "

"There are two women who are fighting each other - and together they turn a decent film into great cinema."

“It's a shame about the effort. [...] Besides all the optical bohei, the development of the characters was completely forgotten. "

“The director of Snow White and the Huntsman seems to have wanted too much, but to have implemented too little skillfully. While one part turned out to be much too gloomy, the other part is too intentionally funny and unsuitably humorous. […] The acting is good, but Kristen Stewart as 'Snow White' doesn't work. She is too expressionless and simply does not have the charisma of a future princess. At the average level, however, 'Snow White' still stands out because the imagery is particularly impressive, although it suffers greatly from the quality already mentioned. "

Awards

Snow White and the Huntsman was a nominee for the 2013 Academy Awards with two nominations ( Best Costume Design and Best Visual Effects ) , but couldn't accept any.

continuation

Despite generally muted reviews, Universal Pictures announced a sequel in June 2012. David Koepp was initially engaged for the script, but he left the project in August 2012. The next script versions were written by Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos . Frank Darabont was hired as director , who in turn delivered a new version of the script, but left the project in January 2015. The new director was Cedric Nicolas-Troyan , who had already worked as a second unit director and VFX supervisor for Snow White and the Huntsman and received an Oscar nomination in the latter role. Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron were hired again for the leading roles. Kristen Stewart is not there. The film, titled The Huntsman & The Ice Queen , hit theaters in April 2016.
