action

In a kingdom in a distant land, a princess is born, who is named Snow White because of her appearance . Shortly after her birth, her mother dies. The people love the king, under whose rule they are well off. After a few years the king makes the evil Clementianna, who wants to be the most beautiful woman in the world and who was able to win the king's heart with a love potion, into his second wife. With her crescent necklace she manages to bewitch the king. He then disappears into the nearby forest, leaving his kingdom behind and is no longer seen from now on. Clementianna now rules the country, although Snow White, raised by the queen, would be the rightful heir to the throne. Under Clementianna's government, the country is slowly but surely being driven into bankruptcy. In addition, it drives the "ugly" out of the nearby village, bewitches the land so that there is eternal winter, and exploits the population. The people project the hope that everything could get better onto Snow White.

Ten years have passed: Snow White has grown into a beautiful girl. The queen realizes that her stepdaughter has to die, only in this way can she remain the most beautiful in the country. It is Snow White's 18th birthday when she clashes with the Queen during a party where Clementianna plays live chess . Shortly thereafter, the queen received the news that her kingdom was on the verge of bankruptcy and that for this reason she had to marry a rich prince.

At the same time, Prince Alcott, heir to the throne of the King of Valencia, and his servant are ambushed by bandits in the nearby forest. A rumor circulates about the forest that a beast is up there. The alleged mischief turns out to be the seven dwarfs Napoleon, Halb Pint, Fraß, Grimm, Wolf, Fleischer and Gluckser. Although Alcott says he won't fight dwarfs, because of their cheeky demeanor, he does. He succumbs and is hung half-naked from a tree with his bodyguard. A short time later, Snow White is walking through the forest. When she sees the men dangling, she frees them and continues towards the village.

The prince makes his way to the castle, where he is received by Clementianna, who likes what she sees. When she learns that Valencia is a rich country, she orders a wedding. But since there is no more money, she has the taxes in the impoverished village increased again. While Snow White is still there, the queen's carriage drives up there. The royal bodyguard, Brighton, rises from her and announces a further increase in taxes.

Returning to the castle, Alcott and Snow White dance together at a celebration in honor of the prince. Clementianna, who watches how well they both get along, becomes jealous and orders Brighton to kill Snow White in the woods. In the forest, the servant is not only afraid of the beast, he also leaves the beautiful young woman alive in memory of her father, who was always righteous, and advises her to flee as far as she can. While Snow White is found passed out by the seven dwarfs in front of their home and taken into their care, Brighton announces the death of Snow White to the Queen.

When Brighton collects taxes in the village the next morning, he is attacked and robbed by the seven dwarfs on his way back through the forest. Back in her camp, Snow White notices what prey the dwarfs have appropriated. She tries to talk the dwarves into conscience and finally brings the gold coins back to the village herself. She credits the dwarfs alone with the fact that the residents get the money they urgently need back. They feel flattered and accept Snow White into their community. From now on they decide only to rob the queen and to return the booty to the poor people.

Shortly after Prince Alcott learns from Clementianna that Snow White is dead and he is still deeply saddened because he genuinely loved Snow White, the robbed Brighton appears in the castle and excitedly tells the Queen what happened to him. Alcott, who knows nothing about the real context, goes back into the forest with a band of guards to fight the dwarves. When he meets Snow White there, his astonishment is great. While the dwarves defeat the guardians, Snow White fights with Alcott. After a long fencing match, she defeats the prince, who comes back half-naked to the castle, whereupon there is an uproar. Clementianna seeks advice from her magic mirror and thus finds out the background. She then causes the mirror to briefly turn Brighton into a cockroach . Der Spiegel calls Clementianna a price that she doesn't want to know about. With a love potion, which is for dogs , however, Clementianna manages to win Alcott's heart so that she can plan her wedding .

The following night, the queen attacks the dwarfs' dwelling with two wooden fighters animated by magic, but does not manage to kill Snow White or anyone else, as her plan intended.

Brighton becomes human again on the wedding day. While the queen is still dressed in the castle, Snow White and the dwarfs attack the wedding guests, rob the participants of the celebration and kidnap the prince. Snow White, who still hopes that Alcott loves her, is at first sad to see that he has fallen for the Queen, but then notices, like the dwarves, that he has only been bewitched. After many unsuccessful attempts to disenchant him again, the kiss of true love that Snow White gives him finally helps.

At night, Snow White's stepmother goes into the forest. The princess leaves her home with the prince and the dwarves to fight the beast, which must be very close to her in the forest. There she meets the queen. Clementianna explains to her that she alone has power over the beast and then sets her on her stepdaughter. While Snow White is fighting the beast with the rushed Prince Alcott and the dwarfs, the princess recognizes the crescent chain on the beast's neck and cuts the chain with a dagger. At the same moment the curse that the evil Clementianna had inflicted on the king is broken and he returns in human form - with no memories of the time when he was a beast. The presumptuous queen, on the other hand, now has to pay the price for her sorcery to the magic mirror, the worst that could hit her - she is suddenly old and ugly.

After the king grants the brave dwarves and the prince a wish, Alcott asks for Snow White's hand. The two marry, and Snow White's stepmother, who is now very old, tries to kill her stepdaughter with a poisoned apple. However, Snow White sees through the ruse and does not eat the apple. At the end you see the dwarfs exercising their old jobs again, and Snow White starts singing the song I Believe in Love and dancing Bollywood- style.

production

At the beginning of June 2010 it was announced that Relativity Media wanted to make a remake of the fairy tale Snow White .

The film had a budget of 85 million US dollars . Shooting began on June 20, 2011 in Québec under the working title Untitled Snow White Project and lasted until mid-September 2011. On November 4, 2011, the film was titled as Mirror Mirror . The first trailer was seen from November 30, 2011.

The film came out a few months before Snow White and the Huntsman , a film also based on the fairy tale Snow White , and a short time after Grimm's Snow White , a mockbuster of both films. Thus, at least three Snow White films appeared in the USA in 2012.

occupation

As the first actress, Julia Roberts could be engaged as the evil Queen Clementianna. On May 26, 2011, Armie Hammer was cast in the role of Prince. He was able to outdo James McAvoy and Alex Pettyfer , who had also applied for the role. The role as Snow White went to Lily Collins on May 26, 2011 , after Saoirse Ronan was originally intended for the role. In the end, however, the producers found the age gap between her and Armie Hammer too big (he was 24 and she was 17). Even Felicity Jones was offered the role, but she refused.

criticism

“Good and sometimes fresh actors, wonderfully funny dialogues, good, hand-made action and wonderful pictures and costumes speak for this unconventional fairy tale film. “Mirror, mirror” sets the internal Snow White bar high and dismisses the fairytale-loving audience with a big smile. The film will hit German cinemas on April 5th. " Snow White & The Huntsman " starring Charlize Theron as Queen, Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Chris Hemsworth as the Hunter will hit theaters on May 31, 2012 as a contrast to this version. However, the film has yet to prove itself against this happy and lively good-mood version of "Mirror, Mirror" and director Singh through the chosen dark and more serious basic tenor. On paper and thanks to the actors involved, “Snow White & The Huntsman” is probably one step ahead commercially - but that doesn't make “Mirror, Mirror” any less worth seeing. "

- Serienjunkies.de

"Apparently it's about beauty, but actually about speed in Singh's playful, predominantly cheerful adaptation, which comes to the cinemas eight weeks earlier than Snow White and the Huntsman , the much darker and franchised action and fantasy variant of the Grimm kit last but not least, to keep this time advantage, has given up the originally planned three-dimensionality. The motor of the new fairy tale boom is Disney's megahit Rapunzel - New Feels , who probably also inspired the more self-confident and combative heroine, played by musician Phil Collins ' daughter Lily . The true story of Snow White moves away from the original, turns the prince into a well-built, but manageable, masculine clone of Ken, the seven dwarfs into funny robbers in the spirit of Terry Gilliam's Time Bandits , uses the Grimm motifs of envy and jealousy, but dispenses with death sleep and other horror elements of the classic. This reduces the horror in a family-friendly way, but also the intensity of the emotions in this reinterpretation, which is always comedy between relaxed and sometimes silly. "
