Mare Winningham (* 16th May 1959 in Phoenix , Arizona as Mary Megan Winningham ) is a US-American actress .

Life and accomplishments

Winningham comes from a large family. She grew up in Northridge ( California on), where her father at the California State University worked.

Winningham made her debut in the 1976 television western Wildes New Land . She starred in the 1980 television drama Amber Waves , starring alongside Dennis Weaver and Kurt Russell ; for this role she received the 1980 Emmy Award . In the SF drama Heart Surgeon Dr. She played Vrain (1981) on the side of Donald Sutherland and Jeff Goldblum , for which she was nominated for the Genie Award in 1983 . In the film St. Elmo's Fire (1985) she was seen in one of the bigger roles alongside Emilio Estevez , Rob Lowe , Demi Moore and Andie MacDowell . For her role in the SF action film Night of Decision - Miracle Mile (1988) she was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in 1990.

In the drama The Tree House (1994) Winningham played the role of Lois Simmons , wife of Stephen Simmons ( Kevin Costner ) and mother of Stu Simmons ( Elijah Wood ). She took the title role of Georgia in the 1995 film drama Georgia , in which she played alongside Jennifer Jason Leigh . For this role she was nominated in 1996 for an Oscar and for the Screen Actors Guild Award and won the Independent Spirit Award .

For her role in the 1997 television biography Wallace by John Frankenheimer , in which she starred alongside Gary Sinise and Angelina Jolie , Winningham was nominated for the 1998 Golden Globe Award , the Screen Actors Guild Award and the Golden Satellite Award . She won the Emmy Award in 1998 . In 1998 and 1999 she appeared in the television series Emergency Room as Dr. Amanda Lee up. In the television drama The Maldonado Miracle (2003) by Salma Hayek , she played one of the leading roles alongside Peter Fonda , for which she was nominated for the Daytime Emmy Award in 2004.

Winningham was briefly married to actor A Martinez in 1981 . In 1983 she married William Maple, with whom she has five children.
