Swing Vote , also known as Swing Vote - The Best Choice , is a US comedy film from 2008. It was directed by Joshua Michael Stern , who co- wrote the script with Jason Richman . The film was released in German stores on DVD and Blu-ray .
action
Bud Johnson is not considered to be particularly successful, but he is very popular in the area and a good-hearted person. Unfortunately he gets drunk almost every day and doesn't really know what to do with his life, but he should actually take care of Molly, his 12-year-old daughter. Instead, she runs the household for him and is otherwise a very independent girl. She asks him to reconsider his approach to life.
During the election of the President of the United States , there is a one-off stalemate between Republican incumbent Andrew Boone and his Democratic challenger Donald Greenleaf. In this situation, Johnson's pending vote is crucial, which is what arouses media interest. In truth, his daughter Molly tried to vote for him, but it went wrong due to a technical glitch and is not known.
Johnson participates in political debates and interviews where he expresses positions that the parties immediately adopt to get his vote - among other things, Republicans suddenly support same-sex marriage or environmental protection, while Democrats oppose abortion because Bud had spoken out "for life" in the interview. All of this causes utter confusion. At the end he casts his vote; however, it remains open which candidate he ultimately decided on.
Reviews
James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film combines mild satire with a Capra- style melodrama - which results in a "surprisingly well-working formula". He avoids sermons as well as taking sides with one of the two parties. Kevin Costner is correctly cast ("Kevin Costner is at home as the irascible Bud"), but Madeline Carroll would steal several scenes from him and Paula Patton. Kelsey Grammer and Dennis Hopper offer the charisma required for their roles.
Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on July 31, 2008 that the film was "a brilliant comedy with telling undertones". He is "surprisingly realistic" when portraying media people. The whole cast is strong; Ebert particularly likes the portrayal of Stanley Tucci in the role of an election campaign manager.
backgrounds
The film was shot in Albuquerque , Santa Fe, and several other locations in New Mexico . It hit US cinemas on August 1, 2008, grossing around $ 16.3 million .
In the film, director Joshua Michael Stern deals with the question of what effects it could have if every single voice really counts. In the film, the most powerful men in the country vie for the voice of a man whom they would otherwise never pay attention to and who doesn't know what to do with world politics.
