Charles Esten Puskar (born September 9, 1965 in Pittsburgh ) is an American actor , singer , songwriter and comedian . His best known role is that of country musician Deacon Claybourne in the American television series Nashville , which he played from 2012 until the end of the series in 2018. In 2020 he played the role of Ward Cameron on the Netflix series Outer Banks .

Life

Esten graduated from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg , Virginia . He then appeared in numerous television series from the 1990s, including a. in Star Trek: Spaceship Voyager and Superman - The Adventures of Lois & Clark (both 1996). In the crime film Murder Without Memory (1997) he played alongside Hilary Swank as the wife of a man who in a state of somnambulism kills his mother-in-law.

In the dystopia Postman (1997) by and with Kevin Costner , he played Abby's husband ( Olivia Williams ). In the thriller Thirteen Days (2000), Esten was again seen at Costner's side. In the drama Save It for Later (2003) he played a major role alongside Theresa Russell and Craig Sheffer . In the comedy Swing Vote (2008) he had another role alongside Costner. From 1999 to 2005 he was a cast member in the American comedy show Whose Line Is It Anyway? . From 2012 to 2018 he played a leading role as country singer and guitarist Deacon Claybourne in the American television series Nashville . He also worked as a singer and songwriter for the series' soundtrack . Esten has been married to Patty Hanson since 1991; the couple has three children.
