Superman - The Adventures of Lois & Clark (Original title: Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman ) is an American action series based on the cartoon character Superman . In contrast to previous film productions, the focus is on the relationship between the two main characters Lois Lane and Clark Kent (Superman). The established characters have also been partially reinterpreted for the series. The series, which was broadcast on the American broadcaster ABC from 1993 , was discontinued after four seasons and 88 episodes.

action

concept

Clark Kent comes from the planet Krypton and has superhuman abilities. He works in Metropolis as a reporter for the Daily Planet , where nobody knows anything about his secret second identity as Superman . There he falls in love with his colleague Lois Lane. The tension between the desire for a happy relationship and Superman's duty to use his superpowers to protect the world from villains like Lex Luthor or the time traveler Tempus brings Lois and Clark repeatedly into difficult situations.

First season

The first few episodes deal mainly with the development of Lois and Clark from rivals to friends. At first, Lois raves about the newly appeared Superman in town and completely ignores Clark Kent. The powerful billionaire Lex Luthor woos Lois, who initially does not want to believe in his criminal machinations. As Superman, Clark not only fights against Luthor and other gangsters, but also intensively researches his origins.

In the finale (1–22: “The Wedding of the Year” - “House of Luthor”) Lois rejects Lex at the altar because she is aware of her love for Clark. When Lex Luthor is finally exposed as a criminal, he jumps out of his penthouse .

Second season

In the second season the friendship between Lois and Clark is strengthened. After Clark had to fake his death (2-07: “Comeback for Al Capone” - “That Old Gang of Mine”) in order not to reveal his secret alter ego, both of them notice that they feel more for each other. But Clark's constant disappearance when he has to act as Superman puts great obstacles in the way of love. The relationship is endangered by other love affairs (with Clark through the prosecutor Mayson Drake , with Lois through the agent Dan Scardino ). Ultimately, however, both find each other.

The conclusion is the cliffhanger for the next season: Clark proposes to Lois (2-22: "The question of all questions" - "And the answer is ...").

Third season

At the beginning of the third season Lois answers the marriage proposal by revealing Clark's Superman identity. The following stories deal with the couple's problems in the run-up to the planned dream wedding. Above all, Lois struggles with Clark's different identity. He separates from her to protect her from possible dangers, but comes back to Lois. The climax is a five-part series that begins with the planned wedding of Lois and Clark (3-15: “Wedding with obstacles” - “I now pronounce you”). However, Lois suffers amnesia in the further course and can no longer remember Clark. Clark manages to help her.

Again an open ending marks the end of the season: Clark has to play a two-parter (3-21: “Die Kryptonier” - “Through a glass, darkly”; 3-22: “Farewell to Superman” - “Big girls don't fly ”) decide between the earth and its planet of origin and finally follows two members of his race to a Kryptonian colony where a war has broken out. Lois stays behind.

Fourth season

At the start of the fourth season, Clark can reconcile his people and defeat a Kryptonian nobleman who wants to subjugate the earth as a slave colony. Back in Metropolis, Clark finally manages to marry Lois (4-03: “The wedding trap” - “Swear to God, this time we're not kidding”), but among other things they have to defeat a centuries-old curse on their love (4-04: "The Evil Curse" - "Soul Mates"), Lois is suspected of murder and sentenced to death (4-06: "The case of Lois Lane" - "The people vs. Lois Lane"), and Clark is blocked by Tempus by a time window into nothing.

In the meantime, both of them are trying to cope with the everyday life of the marriage - and are also concerned about offspring. However, after learning that their genes are incompatible to father children, at the end of the season they find a child in their house whose origins remain unclear due to the series' discontinuation.

Fifth season (not released)

The last episode of the fourth season was intended as a cliffhanger for the planned fifth season. The scriptwriters reported that the following season would announce that this child was brought here by a benefactor from the future and that it is actually their offspring. It was planned that this child would develop into a teenager at super speed. However, the offspring should also face dangers from the future (presumably from the returning villain Tempus ), which would have challenged Clark in his dual role as a radiant hero and father. Another explanation released by the producers was that the child belonged to a New Kryptonian aristocratic family (and was sent to Earth for political reasons) or was arranged by the New Kryptonians.
