Krypto ( English Krypto the Superdog ) is the name of a fictional character owned by the US entertainment company Time Warner , who first appeared in 1955. Various comic book publications and a television cartoon series appear with the character .

Krypto appears as a white-skinned dog who has extraordinary abilities that he owes to his extraterrestrial origins from the planet Krypton, after which he is named. Krypto was first featured in Adventure Comics # 210 in July 1955. The author of this issue was the famous science fiction writer Otto Binder , the drawings were made by long-time Superman regular artist Curt Swan .
In this issue, Krypto is presented as a dog from Superman's home planet Krypton who, thanks to the rays of the yellow sun of the Milky Way System on Earth, has all the superpowers that his "master" has, who in this issue is still Superman's youthful alter ego Superboy, the stories published in Adventure Comics were about his experiences. As you can also learn in that story, crypto came to earth when Superman's father, the Kryptonian scientist Jor-El, put him as a passenger in a small rocket he made himself, which was the dog of Krypton - which was about to doom Earth should carry. Jor El, the story goes on, wanted to test whether the rocket model he had developed was able to carry a living being safely through space to a pre-programmed target, and then, if the outcome was satisfactory, his infant son Kal El (Superman ) forward. Due to an accident - its rocket hits an asteroid and thus changes its trajectory - Krypto's rocket does not reach Earth like the rocket from Kal El, but is sent on a long journey through space and only lands years later - after it has flown a loop is - on earth. When he reaches this, Kal El is no longer an infant, but a child and thanks to his superpowers he is active as a young hero Superboy. After dog and owner have been reunited, Superboy uses Krypto as a companion on his adventures. To this end, he equips the dog with a collar and a cape bearing the famous Superman S emblem. To protect his secret identity as the farm boy Clark Kent, Superboy Krypto also gives Krypto a secret identity as the farm dog Skip on his parents' farm. Afterwards, Krypto supports Superboy on countless adventures and occasionally accompanies his masters when he - now grown up - becomes the hero Superman. Often, however, the super dog cannot be found because he is out and about in space for extended roaming and hunting comets.
From Adventure Comics # 210 onwards, Krypto appeared for almost thirty years, until 1986, as a regular supporting character in Superman or Superboy stories and finally received his own stories, which put him as the main character at the center of the plot, under the title “Krypto the Superdog ”was released as a loose series in series such as Superman Family and Adventure Comics or as a backup feature in series such as Action Comics. It was particularly characteristic that in most of these stories crypto is as intelligent as a human being, which is particularly expressed in the thought balloons that showed the reader what the dog - who in this version could not speak - was thinking.
Modern comic version
In 2000, DC introduced a modern version of the super dog to the Superman comics. This is initially nothing more than a deceptively real illusion that the alien Brainiac13 creates with the help of his mental powers as part of an art world in which Superman is temporarily trapped. When Superman frees himself from this world, the artificial dog simply follows him and becomes real itself with his flight into reality.
Unlike the crypto of the old comics from the 1950s to 1980s, this crypto is not endowed with human-like intelligence, but only has the same intellectual gifts as a normal dog - with the difference that it has superpowers similar to Superman. One consequence of the great powers of the good-natured and trusting but also stupid, wild and playful dog like a normal animal is that, following his instincts, he causes all sorts of mischief with simple actions: Crypto destroys doors if he scratches and injures them Criminals hard when he snaps harmlessly at them. Superman therefore temporarily locks crypto under the supervision of a robot in his fortress of solitude and later gives it to younger people - whose society prefers crypto - such as Kon-El or Jimmy Olsen, who calls him Pal.
From 2005 to 2006, DC's sub-label Johnny DC also published 20 comic books under the title Krypto the Superdog, which are part of the continuity of the television cartoon series of the same name.

Production and publication
In 2005, Time Warner produced an animated series with a focus on crypto. Directed by Scott Jeralds and music composed by William Anderson.
The first broadcast under the title Krypto the Superdog took place from March 25, 2005 to December 15, 2006 on the US-American themed channel Cartoon Network . She reached a total of 39 episodes, each of which consisted of two 15-minute short stories. Since then she has been repeated in the USA on Cartoon Network and WB Kids . There are synchronizations into Spanish and French. The German version was first broadcast by Kabel 1 from September 3, 2005 to September 30, 2006 .

The series is basically based on the comic book, but some things have been changed. In his cartoon series, Krypto doesn't live with Superman, but lives in the household of the family of a little boy named Kevin Whitney, who lives in a suburb of Metropolis. Unlike in the comics, crypto and its animal friends and opponents can speak and communicate like humans.
