Superman Returns is a comic book adaptation of the US director Bryan Singer from the year 2006 . The science fiction film is an indirect sequel to the films Superman (1978) and Superman II - Alone Against All (1980) and was u. a. Produced by Warner Bros. , Legendary Pictures , DC Comics , and Bad Hat Harry Productions . Superman Returns refers partly to its predecessor in terms of content and partly in terms of design, without adhering to them exactly. The theme is the return of Superman's to earth after several years of absence. There he has to try to reintegrate into society both in private life and with his superhero identity. The film was released in US cinemas on June 28, 2006. The premiere took place in Germany on August 17, 2006.
action
After Superman explores the remains of his destroyed home planet Krypton and realizes that he is the only survivor of Krypton, he returns to Earth. The five-year absence makes it difficult for him to find his place again in a society that has learned to survive without Superman. The forgotten superhero sees his widowed adoptive mother Martha Kent again, who is now being looked after by Ben Hubbard, who is of the same age. Martha has decided to sell the farm Clark grew up on. In flashbacks, he remembers discovering his superpowers as a teenager.
When Superman wants to resume his bourgeois existence as reporter Clark Kent at the Daily Planet newspaper , he has to painfully realize that there seems to be no more room for him in the life of his work colleague Lois Lane either. She is now in a relationship with Richard White and has a son named Jason. She is also the author of the article "Why the world doesn't need Superman" and is said to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for it. When Superman was barely able to prevent a plane crash, he made his public appearance again and his return met with widespread enthusiasm. Lois does not seem to be averse to a renewed approach with the superhero, despite her previously written article and her relationship with Richard. After initial skepticism and anger because Superman left her and the world without saying goodbye, she finally accepts his apology.
While Superman tries in his identity as Clark to reduce the emotional distance between Lois and himself while also fulfilling his duties as a superhero, his long-time archenemy Lex Luthor becomes active again. After his release from prison he becomes a multi-billionaire through inheritance sneaking and gathers a crowd of criminals around him in order to destroy Superman once and for all and at the same time to subdue the world. His plan is to combine the crystals that he stole from Superman's fortress of loneliness in the Arctic during Superman's absence with kryptonite , the only material that can harm Superman. He wants to create an island in the Atlantic, which would flood the United States with its land mass, causing millions of deaths. During an experiment carried out by Luthor with a tiny piece of crystal, there was a brief power outage in Metropolis for all electronic devices, which was also the reason for the plane crash.
Lois has now managed to locate Luther's villa as the source of the power failure, but does not know that it belongs to him. On the day of the Pulitzer Awards ceremony, she goes there with her son Jason to investigate. Their curiosity leads them to the nearby ship, where they are surprised by Luthor and taken prisoner to sea. After a brief interview with Luthor, it is suggested that Jason is sensitive to the kryptonite in Luther's hand. He puts his plan into action and shoots the crystal he has worked into the sea, whereupon it begins to grow. Lois can secretly fax the Daily Planet and give the coordinates of her location. Brutus, a colleague of Luther's, attacks them, but Jason throws a piano at him, killing him. Richard goes looking for a seaplane, and Superman flies there too. The emergence of the crystal island triggers huge earthquakes that threaten Metropolis. Superman first flies back to the city to protect it and its residents from harm. In the meantime Richard frees Lois and Jason, but the ship is damaged by the constantly growing island and threatens to sink. Superman finally saves the three, takes them to the seaplane and searches for Luthor.
When he finds it, his powers fail due to the kryptonite that the island is made of. Luther's men take advantage of the moment of weakness and hit the defenseless superhero with kicks and punches, so that he goes to the ground. Luthor savored the moment of triumph before ramming a Kyptonite splinter into Superman, causing him to fall unconscious into the sea. Lois, Richard and Jason return to the island by seaplane to help Superman. Jason is the first to discover him floating in the sea and threatening to drown. Lois manages to rescue the weakened superhero and remove the kryptonite splinter. Superman's powers are regenerated by the power of the sun . With his heat view he separates the artificial island from the ocean floor and carries it into space, where large parts of it break off and expose the kryptonite. Luthor escapes with his lover Kitty, but his accomplices die from falling crystal rocks. Before Luthor takes off, Kitty throws the remaining crystal fragments out of the helicopter so that Luthor can no longer abuse them.
After Superman has pushed the island into space with the last of his strength, the forces leave him again due to the kryptonite. He crashes over Metropolis and hits a park. With cardiac arrest, he is taken to a hospital. At first the doctors cannot help him until they realize that there is still a piece of kryptonite in his body, which is paralyzing him. The splinter is removed and his heart is active again, but Superman is still in a coma. Lex Luthor and Kitty are stuck on a small and deserted island. Lois Lane is the only one who receives permission to visit the sick superhero with her son. Jason expresses his affection for Superman with a kiss on his forehead. A short time later, Superman recovers and leaves the hospital unseen. He suddenly realized that Jason must be his own son. When Lois was later working on her new article “Why the world needs Superman”, she was visited by Superman, who promised her to always be close by. Then he leaves Lois, Richard and Jason so that the family will not be separated. The final scene shows Superman looking down at Earth from space.
Discarded scenes
Planning for a fifth Superman film began as early as 1988, and the plan was to use 45 minutes of the unused material from the previous film. Christopher Reeve should again embody the superhero. There was a fight between Superman and Nuclear Man, which is said to have cost six million US dollars to shoot. Originally, the script intended to show Superman's presence in space at the beginning of the film. The viewer should become aware of what brought Superman there and what he was looking for. This should build a bridge to the end of Superman II - Alone Against All . These scenes had already been shot for 20 minutes, but later they were not included in the finished film due to lack of time. The history is not included on the DVD versions either.
The little side story about Superman's foster mother Martha Kent is also not discussed in the film, but only appears in the comic strip for the film and partly in the extended special edition. After submitting the original script, Clark was supposed to find out about his mother's relationship with Ben Hubbard during a visit to the Kent Farm - this can also be seen in an additional scene in the special edition. Martha should explain to him that she would give up the farm and move to Montana . Since this storyline was not relevant for the rest of the story, it was not included in the theatrical version. Thus, one could also keep the option open about the life course of Martha Kent in a possible continuation .
In an interview with the Washington Post , director Bryan Singer talked about his early idea of taking up the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center by filming a scene with Superman at Ground Zero . At sunrise he should look at the empty space with the words: "If I had been here, this might not have happened". However, the idea was rejected.
History of origin
Film version by Tim Burton and Brett Ratner
Since the film series was discontinued due to the poor box office results of the last part Superman IV - The World on the Edge , the film studio Warner Bros. had tried to direct a sequel for more than ten years. In the mid-1990s, screenwriter Kevin Smith and director Tim Burton were commissioned to stage Nicolas Cage in the role of the title hero under the working title Superman Reborn and Superman Lives . For the part of Lois Lane was Sandra Bullock committed while Jack Nicholson Superman's nemesis Lex Luthor should embody. The expected theatrical release of the film was set for the summer of 1999. Smith was soon dissatisfied with the work of Burton, who in turn was unhappy with the film script submitted and planned to have it rewritten by screenwriter Andrew Kevin Walker . Smith was based on the Superman series released by DC Comics in 1993, in which the title character is killed by a genetically modified creature called Doomsday and later comes to life more strongly than ever. The work of film producer Jon Peters , who influenced the script with strange ideas, was also made more difficult . Other reasons that made the film project fail were the high preproduction costs and Warner Bros. ' Reluctance to release the film at the same time as George Lucas ' Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace from competing film studio 20th Century Fox .
In the years to come, names like Michael Bay , Robert Rodriguez and Oliver Stone were associated with the project. The Warner Bros. film studio finally decided against Kevin Smith's film script and hired screenwriter JJ Abrams , who had shown himself as the creator of television series such as Alias - The Agent . In 2001, the American Brett Ratner was hired to direct, who should direct the film based on Abrams screenplay. Actors Matthew Bomer , David Boreanaz , Henry Cavill , Brendan Fraser , Josh Hartnett , Ashton Kutcher , Jerry O'Connell , Ian Somerhalder and Paul Walker were shortlisted for the title role . After the executives of Warner Bros. could not decide on a suitable candidate, Ratner left the film project, exasperated. Anthony Hopkins , who had been hired for the role of Jor-El, did the same for the director.
After Ratner's departure, the filmmaker Joseph McGinty Nichol aka McG was hired for the director's post due to the success of Charlie's Angels (2000) . McG auditioned for the lead roles Jason Behr and Jared Padalecki as Superman and Scarlett Johansson as Lois Lane. However, because of creative differences and problems with the budget, he soon threw in the towel like his predecessors to tackle Charlie's Angels - Full Power (2003). As a result, Wolfgang Petersen was briefly associated with the project. In 2001 and 2002, respectively, Petersen was to take over the direction of an action film in which Superman was supposed to compete against Batman, who had drifted into crime . Candidates for the role of Batman were Christian Bale , who later played the role in Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins (2005), as well as Colin Farrell and James Franco . Jude Law , Tom Cruise , Paul Walker and Josh Hartnett were traded as potential Superman actors . Batman vs. Superman was to be made based on a script by Andrew Kevin Walker and Akiva Goldsman , but the German director left the project to work on his historical epic Troy , which was released in 2004.
Bryan Singer signed on
In 2004, there was a brief renewed prospect that McG would direct the project. But again the filmmaker stopped work because of creative differences and budget problems. McG had u. a. couldn't get used to the fact that Warner Bros. had moved the filming from New York to Australia . With the signing of the American Bryan Singer in the same year, Superman Returns finally took shape. JJ Abrams' script was dropped and Singer stood up for writers Dan Harris and Michael Dougherty, and cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel , with whom he worked on the film adaptations of the comic series X-Men and X-Men (2000) and X-Men 2 (2003) brought to the screen. Harris and Dougherty based their script on the classic comic series and their characters. In addition, an agreement was reached with the producers of the television series Smallville not to let the different versions of the Superman story diverge too far. The series can thus be understood as a quasi- prehistory to Superman Returns , alongside the first two films .
occupation
At the end of October 2004 it was officially announced that the US series actor Brandon Routh would succeed Christopher Reeve († 2004) as Superman in the planned movie Superman Returns . Routh had auditioned with director McG for the role of Superman. When McG withdrew from the project and Bryan Singer was hired, he contacted Routh, who favored the unknown actor for the role because of his ancestry from the American Midwest . In the film he wears an outfit based on the classic costumes of the comic series, with a newly created three-dimensional S symbol and a new type of S-shaped belt buckle.
The commitment was criticized by the worldwide comic book fan base, who viewed Brandon Routh as too young and poorly muscled. James Caviezel , who himself had a keen interest in playing Superman, was turned down by Bryan Singer because he would be too famous and recognizable after his work in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ , according to the director. The television actor of Superman in the television series Smallville , Tom Welling , had already declined to appear in the film in advance. For the role of Lois Lane, Kate Bosworth prevailed against Mischa Barton , Elisha Cuthbert , Claire Danes , Keira Knightley and Keri Russell . Two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey could recommend himself for the part of Superman's archenemy Lex Luthor . None of the three leading actors had read the script before signing the contract.
First, General Zod should also appear as an opponent. However, Singer was only willing to include the role in the script if the British actor Jude Law had agreed to impersonate the character. But after Law had refused several times, the role was not included in the script. There was also an extensive casting for the part of Jimmy Olsen, so Eric Christian Olsen , Topher Grace and Shawn Ashmore were interested in it, but eventually it went to Sam Huntington . In the film, is also Marlon Brando to see († 2004) as Superman's father Jor-El, he had this role in the first Superman embodies film of the 1978th In order to digitally bring the actor, who has since died, back to life, archive material was used that was once produced by Richard Donner for Superman II - Alone Against All . With the help of a special computer technique, a computer mask was created from these recordings, which could now be put into the mouth with the help of the " performance capture " technique. The Superman Returns DVD includes a special documentary about this endeavor. Since the size of Brandon Routh was too clearly visible under the tight clothing, this was subsequently digitally scaled down, similar to what already happened with Lindsay Lohan's bust in Herbie: Fully Loaded .
Noel Neill , who played Lois Lane in films and the television series with George Reeves in the 1940s and 1950s , has a guest appearance as Gertrude Vanderworth at the beginning of the film . Jack Larson , who played reporter Jimmy Olsen in the television series with Reeves, has another guest appearance as the barman serving Clark and Jimmy.
Production costs
Despite persistent disagreements, Superman Returns was considered the third most expensive film ever made by 2009. According to general estimates, the production costs of the film were between 260 and 270 million US dollars, which corresponds to 171 to 178 million euros at the current exchange rate. Variety published an article in which this budget amount was questioned, on the grounds that at least $ 40 million of this award was actually used for unreleased Superman film projects and should therefore not be counted. Superman Returns actually cost 209 million US dollars (138 million euros) and is therefore even cheaper than X-Men: The Last Stand (also realized in 2006 with 210 million US dollars). Since Bryan Singer mentioned a similar amount in an interview, this assumption has been confirmed. With the release of Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 in May 2007, the title of the “most expensive film” was transferred to the latter (budget: 258 million US dollars).
The high costs arose mainly - as usual in this genre - from the large number of CGI scenes. However, contrary to general assumptions, these are not mainly those showing Superman flying and "in action", but rather those for which large-scale backdrops were digitally created. The example of Lex Luther's yacht makes this clear: In fact, only part of the outside terrace was built, the entire rest of the huge ship, which the viewer can see in the overall view, was animated on the computer. Bryan Singer's wish to recreate the three-dimensional logo of the Daily Planet on the roof of the publishing house in real size also failed. The ball illuminated from the inside, already known from comic books, was therefore also artificially created.
Filming
Filming for Superman Returns began on March 16, 2005 in Australia. Leading actor Brandon Routh had chosen to appear more authentic in the role of Superman. a. ten kilograms of muscle mass trained. The film was shot at Fox Studios in Sydney , Newcastle and on a farm near Tamworth that had previously been set up in a recording studio. During the shooting, Bryan Singer willingly provided information about the work in front of and behind the camera through video diaries on the Internet service BlueTightes.net . Thus, for Returns Superman the digital cinema camera Panavision Genesis HD camera used and on HDCAM recorded. The Genesis was developed by Panavision and Sony. A Sony high-performance chip transfers the functions of today's cameras into the digital age. The use of the 35 mm camera lenses from Panavision, which is popular in Hollywood, is guaranteed with the new camera. About 20 minutes of the film also exist in IMAX 3D . This is the first time that scenes with three-dimensional images can be seen in a “Hollywood live-action film”. The film was released simultaneously in normal theaters and in IMAX 3D theaters. The revenues in 92 US IMAX 3D cinemas were 22.7 million and over 7.5 million US dollars in 36 IMAX 3D cinemas worldwide. The American film composer John Ottman , who is also responsible for editing at Superman Returns , is responsible for the film music . Ottman oriented himself on the film music that John Williams had composed for the first feature film in 1978 and the main theme of which is world famous today.
reception
Theatrical release
Even before its release, Superman Returns was considered one of the most important productions of the 2006 cinema year . Bryan Singer gave a first glimpse of his film in July 2005 with a five-minute clip at "Comic-Con" in San Diego . Over six thousand viewers celebrated the preview with a standing ovation , and the film clip was played a second time. There was also approval from the wife of the late Superman actor Christopher Reeve , Dana Reeve , who saw a press photo of Brandon Routh in 2005 while appearing on a US talk show . The expensive production celebrated its world premiere on June 21, 2006 in Los Angeles, after the film had already been presented to the press on June 8.
The US theatrical release was a week later, on June 28, 2006. The film, which received a PG-13 rating in advance, which recommends that Superman Returns only be made available to young people aged 13 and over, climbed after the opening weekend with one Box-office income of 52 million US dollars (41 million euros) went straight to number 1 on the US cinema charts. The film thus climbed to eighth place in the all-time best list of opening earnings. Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins achieved a similar success a year earlier for $ 46.9 million after the opening weekend. After the celebrations for July 4th, the American Independence Day, ended, a profit of 100 million US dollars (78.1 million euros) was expected. The film was shown in cinemas in Germany and German-speaking Switzerland on August 17, 2006, and in Austria on August 18, 2006. Revenues totaled over 391 million US dollars worldwide, of which 200 million were in the United States achieved.
The US comic publisher DC Comics also published four forty-page comic books during June 2006, which bridge the plot of Superman II - Alone Against All (1980) and Superman Returns .
The release of a computer game of the same name was planned for the cinema release . However, it was delayed and was released on November 20, 2006. The voices of Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth can be heard in it. In the USA, the DVD Superman Returns was released on November 28, 2006. German-language DVDs have also been available as a set of two since December 15, 2006. This “2-Disc Edition” contains a three-hour extensive “Making of”, deleted scenes, an Easter Egg , but no comments.
Warner published in November 2006 also an "Ultimate Edition" with the films Superman 1-4 on a total of 14 DVDs. In addition to special editions for the films Superman 1–4 , the box also contains the 2-disc edition of Superman Returns , the bonus disc Look up in the Sky and another bonus disc. The special editions for the four Superman films with Christopher Reeve are also available individually on DVD.
To prevent illegal copies from being sold, Warner Bros. decided to put the original Superman Returns DVD on sale in 8,000 Chinese stores two months earlier than announced worldwide. Each original copy cost the very low price of only 2 US dollars (1.5 euros) in order to find as many buyers as possible who, in return, would possibly refrain from purchasing a black copy.
continuation
A sequel to the film was originally planned for 2009. The start of the filming was only postponed because director Bryan Singer preferred to work on Operation Walküre - The Stauffenberg Assassination . Then writers Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris left the project. When Warner Bros. finally wanted to remake the entire franchise , Bryan Singer dropped out entirely. In June 2013, the remake Man of Steel was finally released , directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan . Henry Cavill inherited Routh as the superhero, and Amy Adams got the role of Lois Lane.
criticism
“The best Hollywood films always knew how to smuggle a seductive subtext into a story suitable for the masses. Superman Returns follows this great tradition. That's why he's more than great. He is excellent. "
“ Superman Returns is the pompously staged return of the hero in a skin-tight suit, which impresses with special effects, but unfortunately has major weaknesses that a wonderful villain alone cannot cover up. [The film] not only struggles with excess length, but also with a story that barely does justice to a TV episode. "
"The arguably constructed continuation of the exhausted superhero material would be completely irrelevant if the talented director, some brilliantly completed supporting roles and various visual display values weren't permanently fighting boredom."
The press opinions about Superman Returns are vastly different. In addition to assessments as the “greatest story of all time” ( Maxim ), which is “superbly conceived and sensitively drawn” ( Variety ), the film is also defined as the “most superfluous film of all time” ( Berliner Zeitung ). The above-average length of 154 minutes and the cast of the main roles are also criticized in general. Only Kevin Spacey's portrayal of the villain was always viewed as positive.
In addition to very positive reviews, such as those found in The Hollywood Reporter ("This Superman, who instills poetry into his work, rises up as a love story filled with epic longing, suppressed desire and breathless images"), articles were also published that deal with the Examine film very critically.
Jürgen Armbruster, editor of the website "filmstarts.de", criticized Superman Returns for the fact that the chosen approach did not work. The film is sometimes "tough as rubber" because not many new, fresh ideas were developed, but actually represents a consistent homage to the Richard Donner films. In addition, the story is greatly exaggerated and Kate Bosworth is miscast.
Superman
Even if Brandon Routh as the new Superman did not get as much praise from the press as Tobey Maguire did as Spider-Man , the young American was largely rated as personable and convincing. Newsweek announced that Routh would portray Superman with "winning strength" and was "less a man of steel than a man of hearts."
There were obviously some problems with the character Superman himself, whose presentation was repeatedly interpreted as an imitation of Jesus, as the following quote illustrates: “The orchestral sounds and choirs […] are supposed to give Superman something divine, but leave the film in the direction of a religious one The path of the Redeemer slips. "( Kleine Zeitung , see also Die Welt )
Lois Lane
Kate Bosworth in particular had to take a lot of negative criticism, on the one hand due to questionable acting qualities ("Kate Bosworth exudes as much charm as a [...] bakery assistant shortly before the shop closes.") And because of the generally poorly thought out part of Lois Lane in Superman Returns . Simon Staake (“filmszene.de”) writes: “As feared, Kate Bosworth does not manage to portray the character of Lois Lane convincingly. Which is not necessarily due to their skills, but the miscalculations of the makers during the casting and scripting. Bosworth is 23, looks three years younger and plays a character who should have continuity and plot after at least 30. "These opinions are countered by some very positive ones, such as:" Kate Bosworth understands the strangeness between them Love for Superman on the one hand and man and child on the other to fill in far beyond what is usual for a comic film adaptation. "(" Celluloid-dreams.de ")
Awards
Just like the other commercial comic book adaptations of recent years, Superman Returns was not included in the awards of the important American film critics' associations such as the New York Film Critics Circle or the Los Angeles Film Critics Association , which at the time did the dramas Flug 93 and Letters from Iwo Jima by the more renowned directors Paul Greengrass and Clint Eastwood as the best films of the year. However, the performance of the Superman Returns film crew in the technical sector, which culminated in nominations for the 2007 Academy Awards and the 2007 British Academy Film Awards , both in the category of Best Visual Effects , was not ignored . There the film had the disadvantage of the financially more successful Pirates of the Caribbean - Pirates of the Caribbean 2 by Gore Verbinski . At the Visual Effects Society Awards 2007 Bryan Singer lost Martin Campbell's James Bond adventure Casino Royale .
Superman Returns received further nominations in 2006 at the Teen Choice Awards , which, like the MTV Movie Awards , are based on the film tastes of youth culture with their awards and nominated lead actors Brandon Routh and Kate Bosworth as the best screen couple. At the presentation of the Saturn Awards 2007, which honors the best productions from the film genres science fiction , fantasy and horror , Superman Returns received ten nominations, while in Germany the Wiesbaden film evaluation agency in July 2006 rated the film as "particularly valuable".
