Reeve portrayed the first superhero in comic history in four movies between 1978 and 1987 . Since then, however, due to the poor box office result of the last part Superman IV - The World Rested on the Abyss , the film studio Warner Bros. had tried for more than ten years with directors such as Tim Burton , Wolfgang Petersen , McG and Brett Ratner to stage a sequel . For the title role, in addition to Nicolas Cage , David Boreanaz , James Caviezel , Brendan Fraser , Josh Hartnett , Ashton Kutcher , Jude Law , Jerry O'Connell , Jared Padalecki , Ian Somerhalder , Paul Walker and Tom Welling , Superman actors of the TV series Smallville , been talked about for the role.

Routh's engagement was criticized by the Superman cartoonists John Byrne and Alex Ross, as well as the global comic book fan base, who found him too young and not muscular enough. After Kate Bosworth for the role of Lois Lane and Kevin Spacey for the role of Superman opponent Lex Luthor had been signed, filming of Superman Returns finally began on March 16, 2005 in Australia . The film grossed 391 million US dollars in cinemas around the world, but received mixed reviews: While US critics predominantly praised the work as a whole and the portrayal of Brandon Routh, the action film was criticized in German-speaking countries as the “most superfluous film of all times ”and the title hero as one-dimensional and boring. Routh did not impersonate this in any other film, Henry Cavill succeeded him as Superman in the 2013 Man of Steel .
