Henry William Dalgliesh Cavill (born May 5, 1983 in Jersey , Channel Islands ) is a British actor .

Henry Cavill grew up as the fourth of five brothers in Jersey but attended Stowe School in Stowe , Buckinghamshire . Cavill's talent for acting was already evident in school theater; so he was usually cast for large roles (such as for Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream ).

Cavill was discovered at the age of 17 in 2000 by director Dennis Berry . The youth drama Laguna - first shown in April 2001 - was Cavill's film debut. He had his breakthrough in 2002 at the side of Jim Caviezel in Kevin Reynolds adventure film Monte Cristo . Then Cavill u. a. in Tristan & Isolde from 2006 in front of the camera.

However, Cavill had to leave three film roles, for which he also auditioned, to other actors. In Batman Begins as well as in Superman Returns and James Bond 007 - Casino Royale , he took part in the castings, but the respective roles went to Christian Bale , Brandon Routh and Daniel Craig . In the 2007 film Der Sternwanderer , he was seen on the big screen alongside Michelle Pfeiffer and Claire Danes . Henry Cavill celebrated great success with the series The Tudors . In it he played the role of Charles Brandon - a charismatic young man with women at his feet and who is not afraid of any pleasure and is a good friend and close advisor to King Henry VIII (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers ). However, loyalty and friendship are put to the test when Brandon falls in love with the king's sister.

Cavill starred in Zack Snyder's Superman film Man of Steel , which hit theaters in June 2013. In the two sequels Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017), also staged by Snyder, Cavill was seen again as Superman. In March 2017, it was announced that he would play a role in Mission: Impossible 6 .

In September 2018 it was announced that he would take on the lead role of Geralt von Rivia in the Netflix series The Witcher , which is based on the Geralt saga by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski .

The actor largely keeps his personal life away from the public. In May 2011 it was announced that he had become engaged to show jumper Ellen Whitaker . However, the engagement was broken off in August 2012 after the couple had split months earlier.
