action
During a sailing vacation with his family in Spain, Will Shaw's parents, his brother and future sister-in-law are kidnapped. He turns to the local police, but finds that they are of little help. On the other hand, he unexpectedly meets his father Martin, who appears to be on the run and confesses to him that he works as an agent for the CIA. Shortly afterwards he is shot and now Will's own life is in great danger. He can still take his father's gun and cell phone, then the murderers make the body disappear. Will uses the cell phone's call list for his own investigations, as the local police refuse to cooperate. The agent Jean Carrack, who Martin worked with, seems to be playing the wrong game. She claims that Martin sold sensitive information to a warring state. Will, however, thinks his father is sincere.
When his father's cell phone rings, he hesitantly answers it. The kidnappers demand that he hand over a briefcase so that the hostages are released. In his distress he shows up for delivery without the suitcase. The kidnappers turn out to be Israelis and he learns that the agent Jean Carrack herself is the defector and not Martin Shaw. Will promises to help get the suitcase. He challenges Carrack and at the end of a wild chase through downtown Madrid , Spanish security forces shoot Carrack and take the suitcase. The hostages are released and Will can hug his family again.

criticism
The film was received mostly negatively. Rotten Tomatoes scores a mere 5% based on over 40 reviews.
“With his latest film“ The Cold Light of Day ”, Mabrouk El Mechri is now slowly approaching his career in the dream factory. With Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver, he has two genre legends at his disposal for his action thriller, plus an aspiring leading actor in the future “Superman” Henry Cavill. This prominent cast testifies to El Mechri's new status, while at the same time he retained certain freedoms from the Hollywood mania for control when producing the film, which was made in Europe. However, he cannot take full advantage of these promising opportunities. "The Cold Light of Day" is exciting and the action is skilfully staged, but the story of the conspiracy does not make a bigger impression - neither the characters nor the plot are strong and independent enough.
