Roschdy Zem (born September 28, 1965 in Gennevilliers , France ; actually Roschdi Zamzem ) is a French actor , director and screenwriter .

Life

Roschdy Zem was born in Gennevilliers in 1965 as the son of Moroccan immigrants . As a child, he spent many summer holidays with foster parents in Belgium , while his parents were on vacation in Morocco, but could not take Zem and his four siblings with them. In addition to French and Arabic, he has also spoken Flemish since then . He trained as an actor and appeared for the first time in a film in 1987 in Die Strich-Academy , directed by Josiane Balasko . In 1991 director André Téchiné gave him a role in his film I don't kiss , in which Philippe Noiret and Emmanuelle Béart played the leading roles. Two years later he could also be seen in Téchinés My Favorite Season (1993) alongside Catherine Deneuve and Daniel Auteuil . In 1998 there was another collaboration with Téchiné for the film Alice & Martin with Juliette Binoche . Most of the time Zem plays immigrants of Moroccan or Algerian origin in his films . This is also the case in the film drama Change moi ma vie , where he played the role of an Algerian transvestite alongside Fanny Ardant .

In 2000, Zem received his first nomination for César in the Best Supporting Actor category for his performance alongside Vincent Lindon in Everything for the Company . In 2006, as part of the male ensemble in Days of Fame , a war film about North African soldiers during World War II , he won the Best Actor Award at the 59th Cannes International Film Festival . In the same year he made his directorial debut under the title Mauvaise foi , in which he took on the male lead alongside Cécile de France . For the comedy film about a relationship between a Jew and an Arab, he received a César nomination in the category of best first work . Other films he directed followed, including the film drama Omar - A Justice Scandal (2011) and the biopic Monsieur Chocolat (2016). For his portrayal in the crime film Roubaix, une lumière , Zem was awarded the César in the category Best Actor in 2020 .

Zem has a daughter and a son with his wife, Nicole, of Jewish descent, a psychologist with whom he has been married since the mid-1990s.
