action

The year 1897, Northern France: George Footit performed as a clown in the small Delvaux village circus for a long time, but his jokes are getting on in years. Circus director Théodore Delvaux is looking for something spectacular and so, in addition to a short stature and an overweight woman, he also has the black Rafael Padilla from Cuba in his program, whom he and his chimpanzee Pascha advertise as a cannibal and "Negro king Kananga". Footit convinces Padilla to perform as a clown duo with him. You can convince Delvaux to give them a chance as a “white clown and stupid August”. Their number is very well received by the audience and so they initially appear as "Footit and Kananga" and after a short time under the name "Footit and Chocolat" in the circus, of which they will soon become stars. Joseph Oller from the Nouveau Cirque in Paris sees an appearance and gives them an engagement.

In Paris they quickly become audience favorites and also play their best skits in front of the film camera. The extroverted Padilla in particular begins to love luxury. He surrounds himself with beautiful women, buys a car, buys expensive suits, and loses much of his income gambling. During a press appearance, he met the widowed nurse Marie Hecquet; both become a couple.

The success of Footit and Chocolat also makes enemies of both. The funny duo Ortis and Green taunts the competitors and Yvonne Delvaux, her former employer, reports Padilla to the police because he has no identification papers. Padilla is arrested and mistreated by the police. In prison he met the black intellectual Victor, who despised Padilla's work, as Chocolat lets Footit chase him through the ring and beat him up every evening. Padilla's success is a mockery for whites, his social recognition is only a sham. True art has to change the situation and create new perspectives. After more than a week, Padilla is released, but his time in prison has changed him. He begins to question his role in the clown duo, no longer accepts that he receives less fee than Footit and defends himself against advertising posters that stylize him as a monkey. However, Footit makes it clear to him that he would be a nobody on stage by himself. When Padilla removes himself from his role during a performance and Footit paroli, the latter slaps him. Padilla no longer tolerates Ortiz's teasing either, but beats him up, whereupon he receives a fine from the circus director.

Padilla's big dream is to be taken seriously as an artist. He likes Shakespeare and Victor recommends that he play Othello in the theater, as that role has never been played by a black man. Marie Hecquet, who loves Padilla, puts him in contact with the director of the Théâtre Antoine, Firmin Gémier, who wants to stage Othello with him . Shortly thereafter, Padilla Footit terminated the collaboration. He throws himself into work on Othello , but quickly realizes that he has problems with the text and the stage. First articles tear his performance up even before the premiere and Padilla almost breaks with self-doubt. He catches up and shines at the premiere. The audience whistles for him, however, so he should go back to the circus. A little later he is beaten up by gambling debt collectors who smash his hand as a warning.

Bordeaux in November 1917: Padilla and Marie Hecquet got married, but Padilla is at the bottom. He has terminal tuberculosis and is employed as a temporary worker in a village circus. When the doctor only gives him a few days to live, Marie informs Footit that he is going to visit Padilla one last time. When he remembers the days together, Footit laughs and finally begins to cry. Padilla dies on November 4, 1917, not 50 years old.
