The 42nd César Awards took place on February 24, 2017 in the Salle Pleyel in Paris ; the nominations were announced at the end of January 2017. The film prizes awarded by the French Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma were awarded in 22 categories.

With eleven nominations each, Elle (director: Paul Verhoeven ) and Frantz (director: François Ozon ) went to the gala evening as favorites. But while Elle won the main prize for Best Film and received a second César for Isabelle Huppert for Best Actress , Frantz only won the César for Best Cinematography ( Pascal Marti ). The films Simply the End of the World (Director: Xavier Dolan ) and Divines (Director: Houda Benyamina ) were more successful, each with three prizes, as well as Mein Leben als Zucchini (Director: Claude Barras ) and Monsieur Chocolat (Director: Roschdy Zem ) with each two prices.

The award ceremony was broadcast live on French television channel Canal + and was seen by 1.9 million viewers. As host ("maître de cérémonie"), the comedian and actor Jérôme Commandeur led through the evening for the first time . Even before the broadcast, it was clear that George Clooney would receive the honorary award ("César d'honneur") and that Jean-Paul Belmondo would receive an honor for his life's work.

Roman Polański was originally to take over the chairmanship of the gala, which changes annually . This announcement was heavily criticized by women's rights organizations for Polanski's 40-year US conviction of rape. An online petition to remove it drew over 60,000 supporters. Polanski then renounced the honorary chairmanship; this remained vacant for 2017.
