Sébastien Laudenbach (born October 12, 1973 in Arras ) is a French animator and illustrator .

Life

Sébastien Laudenbach grew up in a strictly Catholic family: his father worked as a civil engineer, his mother was a member of the Mouvement chrétien des cadres et dirigeants (MCC) and volunteered for the Christian group ATD Fourth World . Laudenbach's uncle is the actor Philippe Laudenbach .

Laudenbach drew comics as a child. He first attended the École d'art graphique de Penninghen and studied from 1993 at the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs . His first area of ​​interest, inspired by the work of Jean-François Laguionie and René Laloux , was in the field of illustration. Only in the course of his studies did he decide on animation. Laudenbach finished his studies in 1997 with the autobiographical short animated film Journal , which in the form of a diary covers the period October 1996 to March 1997. When the film was shown in a bar, employees of the film production company Magouric became aware of the film and financed a new post-production. They animated Laudenbach to cut the film. The newly cut version was completed in 1998. At the Festival du Court-Métrage de Clermont-Ferrand , Journal won the Youth Jury Prize in the national competition. In 2000 Laudenbach created animation sequences for the film Du poil sous les roses by Jean-Julien Chervier and Agnès Obadia .

A first feature film project for Magouric, on which Laudenbach worked with Jean-Julien Chervier at the suggestion of Laurent Bénégui , was discontinued after two years. In 2004 Laudenbach released the short animated film Des câlins dans les cuisines about two former lovers who decide to spend another last night together. The film was nominated for a Cristal d'Annecy of the Festival d'Animation Annecy in 2004. Laudenbach made other short films: Morceau (2006), Regarder Oana (2009) and the sand animation short film Vasco , which was shown at the 2010 Semaine de la critique in Cannes . Laudenbach wrote the script for the short film Les petits cailloux together with Chloé Mazlo , which was awarded a César in the category Best Animated Short Film in 2015.

Laudenbach's first full-length animation was La jeune fille sans mains in 2016, based on the fairy tale The Girl Without Hands by the Brothers Grimm . Laudenbach made the film improvised without a storyboard alone; it was traditionally hand-drawn. La jeune fille sans mains premiered on May 12, 2016 at the Cannes International Film Festival , with the ACID section (Association du cinéma indépendant pour sa diffusion) opening. Laudenbach received a César nomination in the category Best Animated Film for La jeune fille sans mains 2017 ; the film was also nominated for a Prix ​​Lumières in the category Best Animated Film.
