The ATD Fourth World Movement ( English International Movement ATD Fourth World ) is an international non-governmental organization that advocates human rights , peace and the recognition of human dignity .

history

The association was founded in 1957 as a self-help association in the "Château de France" emergency accommodation camp in the Paris suburb of Noisy-le-Grand . Its founder, Joseph Wresinski , lived there from 1956 to 1967 as a pastor . He himself grew up in abject poverty and wanted the families and population groups excluded because of their poverty to contribute their experiences to society and help shape it as equal partners.

According to its own statements, the organization is politically and religiously neutral and has advisory status with ECOSOC , UNESCO , UNICEF , the International Labor Organization and the Council of Europe . It operates in over 30 countries on all continents. The head office is in Pierrelaye / France, the office for Germany in Gerswalde (Uckermark), the Swiss center in Treyvaux .

The initial ATD stands in English for All Together in Dignity (in German as: Together for the dignity of all, in French with Agir tous pour la dignité).

Together the members develop projects in the field of education and culture. They promote dialogue with one another and with society. One example is the “Fourth World People's Universities” in various European countries. Here, people affected by poverty and other people exchange experiences, learn to listen to each other and address areas of life such as work, culture, education or health. They practice the dialogue and also prepare statements.

effect

Through its research institute, the organization has made a significant contribution to raising awareness of the persistent poverty in rich countries since the 1960s. It has sensitized the international community to the connection between poverty and human rights, which led to the adoption of relevant guidelines by the UN General Assembly in autumn 2012. The Wresinski report of the French Economic and Social Council was pioneering here with its definition: “Economic and social insecurity [...] leads to severe poverty if it affects several areas of existence, if it persists over a longer period of time, if it affects opportunities to take over his responsibilities again in the foreseeable future and to regain his rights. ”At the initiative of ATD Fourth World , October 17th has been celebrated since 1987 as World Day to Overcome Poverty .
