International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
In 1992, the General Assembly declared the United Nations to October 17 for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty . In her resolution of December 22nd, she is pleased that some non-governmental organizations are already celebrating this day in numerous countries on the initiative of the international movement ATD Fourth World .
These non-governmental organizations (NGO) associate three issues with the "World Day to Overcome Poverty":
- to honor the resistance of people affected by poverty to misery and exclusion,
- to make the needy and marginalized people heard and to talk to them,
- Working with the very poor to ensure that everyone's rights really apply to everyone.
An inscription in one of the marble slabs on Human Rights Square ( Place du Trocadéro ) in Paris recalls the origin of this day of commemoration and action:
October 17, 1987.
Human rights advocates from around the world have gathered in this square.
You have paid homage to the victims of hunger , ignorance and violence .
They have expressed their belief
that misery is not immutable.
They have expressed their solidarity with all those people who
are struggling to overcome misery somewhere in the world .
“Wherever people are condemned to live in misery, human rights are violated.
It is a sacred duty to work together to ensure that they are respected. ”
