The International Istanbul Film Festival is considered the oldest and most important international film festival in Turkey . The festival is held annually in several cinemas in Istanbul . The competition period is currently from early to mid-April.

history

The first International Istanbul Film Festival took place in 1982 as "Film Week" as part of the International Istanbul Festival. Only six films on the subject of “the arts and film” were shown. In 1983 the festival (called "Istanbul Film Days") lasted a whole month, but was still part of the International Istanbul Festival.

The film festival has been an independent event since 1984 and has been moved to April. There has been an international and a national competition since 1985. Since 1989, Istanbul has been accredited as an international film festival with a specialized competition by the FIAPF film producers' association . The specialization covers films about literature, theater, music, dance, cinema and visual arts. Parallel to this development, the Istanbul Film Festival was given its current name: International Istanbul Film Festival.

In 1996, honorary prizes and prizes for life's work were awarded for the first time by international and local filmmakers and actors.

Structures and competitions

The films are selected and programmed by a selection committee and an advisory body. Only films that meet the specialization requirements of FIAPF are shown in the international competition. There is also a national competition, a panorama section and various special programs.

The main prize of the international competition is the Golden Tulip for the best film.
