Rodrigues' films are mostly set in the homosexual milieu, which was seldom seen in Portuguese films up to now, and has never been addressed so consistently by any Portuguese director. While his atmospheric images are mostly controlled and observant, Rodrigues' characters are uncontrolled, irrepressible or lost. His films have caused controversy among the Portuguese public because of certain scenes and topics. His films have met with great interest from critics. So who Cinemathek the BAM - Brooklyn Academy of Music and the HFA - Harvard Film Archive shown Rodrigues retrospectives, but also in other countries have cineastes busy with him in Germany. Together with names like Miguel Gomes and Edgar Pêra, he belongs to a new generation of Portuguese filmmakers who are developing their own narrative languages, away from the mainstream and fashionable topics.
