Teresa Morais Villaverde Cabral (born May 18, 1966 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese film director .

Career

She played in theater groups as a student before moving to Prague to study film in the mid-1980s. In between, she stood in front of the camera as an actress for João César Monteiro in his film " On the Sea " ( Á Flor do Mar , 1986). She was then assistant to Paulo Rocha (1987) and wrote with João Canijo on the script for his film Filha da Mãe (1989).

In 1991 she made her first film, “At the end of a childhood” ( A Idade Maior ), co-produced by ZDF . Sérgio Tréfaut and Maria de Medeiros assisted in the direction , who also took on a role. In addition to Medeiros, a number of other well-known actors played, such as the American Vincent Gallo ( dubbed by Pedro Hestnes ), Isabel Ruth and Joaquim de Almeida . Editing was done by João Pedro Rodrigues . The film is set in Portugal at the end of the Portuguese colonial wars , received praise from critics, and was shown at various international festivals (including the Berlinale ), where it won several awards ( Valencia , Dunkirk ).

In 1994 her film "Geschwister" ( Três Irmãos ) was released, with u. a. Evgeniy Sidikhin , Mireille Perrier , Laura del Sol , and with Laura Soveral and the director herself in supporting roles. The main role of the desperate Maria with her lost feelings in the midst of her brothers and the modern city was played by Maria de Medeiros, who received the Coppa Volpi for her performance at the Venice Film Festival .

Her film Os Mutantes (English title: "Os Mutantes - Children of the Night") about three lost and restless young adults, and with Ana Moreira in the main role of Andreia, brought Villaverde a lot of international attention in 1998. The scene in which Andreia gives birth to her child alone in a public toilet is one of the most disturbing scenes in Portuguese cinema. The film was shown at many festivals and received critical acclaim.

In 2004 she made a contribution to the European Visions project, alongside 25 other directors (including Fatih Akın , Peter Greenaway and Aki Kaurismäki ).

With her film Transe in 2006, she took up the topic of forced prostitution. A young Russian woman is crossing Europe with the aim of finding a better life in Portugal. But she falls into the clutches of women traffickers. The disturbing film, for which the leading actress Ana Moreira learned Russian, also caused a sensation internationally, but also for discussions, both because of its design and because of the topic.

In 2011 her film Cisne ("Swan"), about a sleepless singer and her deep emotional and relationship crises, premiered at the Venice Film Festival. With Beatriz Batarda and Miguel Nunes in the lead roles, and contributions from Chico Buarque , Ana Moura , John Cage and Caetano Veloso to the score, Cisne was yet another painful human relationship film that attracted international criticism

In 2017 she received an invitation to compete at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival for her feature film Colo .

Villaverde writes about film in the culture supplement Ípsilon of the Público newspaper .
