Caetano Emanuel Viana Telles Veloso (born August 7, 1942 in Santo Amaro da Purificação , Bahia ) is one of the most influential Brazilian singers , composers and songwriters .

Life

Caetano Veloso was born in Santo Amaro da Purificação in the state of Bahia near Salvador da Bahia . He was the fifth of seven children of José Telles Veloso (Seu Zézinho) and Claudionor Vianna Telles Veloso (Dona Canô). His younger sister Maria Bethânia is also a famous singer.

Veloso spent his youth in the Brazilian northeast, whose rich musical heritage is influenced by Caribbean, African and North American music, but also by deep religious beliefs as well as poverty and the conditions of the weather: long periods of drought make the states there a poor house.

In the early sixties he followed his sister Maria Bethânia, who was already enjoying her first successes as a singer, to Rio de Janeiro . Together with Gilberto Gil , Tom Zé and other artists, Veloso revolutionized the Música Popular Brasileira . The style called Tropicalismo combined bossa nova , folk music , American rock music and influences of the serious music avant-garde (especially Karlheinz Stockhausen ). The album Tropicália ou panis et circensis manifestly formulated the musical and textual ideas of the tropicalists.

From 1964 to 1984 there was a military dictatorship in Brazil that censored many works by committed musicians such as Chico Buarque and Geraldo Vandré . Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil were arrested by the military and went into exile in London in 1968 . Veloso was only allowed to return to Brazil in 1972. Over the past few decades Veloso has remained one of the most creative and influential artists of the Música Popular Brasileira.

In 2002, he published Tropical Truth: A Story of Music and Revolution in Brazil, a reflection on the Tropicalismo movement.

In 2017 he recorded the live album "Ofertório" with his three sons Moreno, Zeca and Tom Veloso, with the repertoire of which the four have been touring extensively since 2018.

In May 2018 he performed as a pause act at the Eurovision Song Contest 2018 in a duet with last year's winner Salvador Sobral .
