Roberto Carlos (born April 10, 1973 in Garça , São Paulo ; full name Roberto Carlos da Silva Rocha ) is a former Brazilian football player and coach . He became world champion as a player in 2002 and won with Real Madrid a . a. three times the UEFA Champions League and numerous national championship titles. He is currently the youth coach at Real Madrid.
Career as a player
society
His career as a professional footballer began with the Brazilian clubs SE Palmeiras and União São João . In 1995 he went to Europe for Inter Milan , but here he was not used by coach Roy Hodgson in his actual position as a left- back .
In 1996 he therefore moved to Real Madrid . Roberto Carlos won the UEFA Champions League three times with Real ( 1998 , 2000 and 2002 ), twice the subsequent World Cup (1998 and 2002) and four times the Spanish championship (1997, 2001, 2003 and 2007).
For the 2007/08 season he moved to Fenerbahçe SK in the Turkish Süper Lig , where he signed a two-year contract with the option of another year. At Fenerbahçe, he is said to have earned 4 million euros a year. On September 17, 2008, he played his 115th game in the UEFA Champions League , setting a new player record. His contract with Fenerbahçe he extended early in September 2008 to August 2010 by drawing the option for a further year, but this contract was terminated during the winter break. Roberto Carlos returned to his homeland in Brazil, where he played for SC Corinthians Paulista from the 2010 season.
In February 2011 Roberto Carlos' move to Russia to the Anzhi Makhachkala became known. The full-back terminated his contract in agreement with the Corinthians club management due to many threats against him. In the Premjer League he was twice the victim of racist attacks within the first six months. When he was pelted with bananas for the second time on June 22, 2011 in the game at Krylya Sovetov Samara , he left the pitch in the 90th minute in protest. A fan of Zenit Saint Petersburg had previously been banned for life by the Russian Football Association after throwing a banana at Roberto Carlos in March. On August 1, 2012, Carlos officially announced the end of his active career at a press conference.
National team
Between 1992 and 2006, Roberto Carlos played in the Brazilian national team . During the 2002 World Cup, which ended with Brazil winning the title, he was one of the top performers of the Brazilian national team. He was elected to the All-Star Team by FIFA. Two days after the Brazilian team left the 2006 World Cup in Germany , he announced his resignation. He was heavily criticized after his elimination against France, especially in Brazil. He had pulled his socks on instead of covering Henry in front of the free kick followed by Thierry Henry . He played a total of 125 international matches and scored eleven goals. Together with Cafu he is the only player who was in six finals (Copa America 1995, 1997 and 1999, Confederation Cup 1997 and World Cup 1998 and 2002); He was able to win four of them (Cafu five).
Special
The only 168 centimeter tall player is known for his massive free kicks and his generally powerful goal shots. For a long time he held the unofficial world record for the hardest shot in football with 202 km / h , before this was surpassed by the Brazilian Ronny with around 212 km / h (131.82 mph) in the 2006/07 season. The correctness of the measurement in Ronny's shot is, however, questioned.
His free-kick goal became famous on June 3, 1997 at the Tournoi de France in the 21st minute against France . The ball landed with a lot of spin and a very unusual trajectory next to the stunned French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez in the far right corner of the goal . In 2010 this shot was analyzed in a scientific publication by the École polytechnique in Paris. It was found that Roberto Carlos hit the ball with such a rare combination of hardness and spin that the ball was deflected more than could be explained by the Magnus Effect and instead, for a short time, became a spiral shape, much more curved than usual Assumed trajectory.
