Dida (born October 7, 1973 in Irará , Bahia ; real name Nelson de Jesús Silva ) is a former Brazilian soccer goalkeeper . He had his most successful period between 2002 and 2010 at AC Milan , with whom he won the Italian championship in 2004 and the 2003 and 2007 Champions League . From 1995 to 2006 Dida also played 91 times for the Brazilian national team . With her he became vice- champion in 1998 and world champion in 2002 . He also won the Copa America in 1999 as well as the Confed Cup in 1997 and 2005 as a goalkeeper . After the 2006 World Cup , which Dida completed as number 1 , he ended his national team career. Dida was characterized above all by his quick reactions on the line, his strong behavior in 1 on 1 and his skills as a "penalty killer".

Club career

Early years in Brazil

EC Vitória

Dida joined his first football club at the age of 16, namely Cruzeiro de Arapiraca from the province of Alagoas . After two years in the club's youth teams, he began his professional career in 1992 at the second-rate Brazilian club EC Vitória . In his first year as a professional he was able to win the state championship of Bahia with ECV and move up to the top division Série A , but has not yet completed a competitive game. For the following season in the first division he developed into the undisputed number one and played all 24 games of the championship, in which Vitória surprisingly reached the final, but which was lost 0-1 and 0-2 against Palmeiras São Paulo . Dida received the Bola de Prata , the award for the best goalkeeper in the A series, from Placar magazine .

Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte

After his good season in 1993 in Vitória, he moved to the top club Cruzeiro Esporte Clube in 1994 . Surprisingly, Cruzeiro was last in his preliminary round group of the championship in 1994 and had to go to the relegation round despite regular goalkeeper Dida, who only missed one game of the season, where the league stay could only be secured thanks to the better goal difference compared to the Clube do Remo . At least the title of State Master of Minas Gerais could be secured. For the first time he appeared on the international stage at the Supercopa Sudamericana this year . With Cruzeiro he reached the semifinals there. The club won another title at the Copa Master de Supercopa , in which Dida remained without a goal, so that Olimpia Asunción from Paraguay could be defeated 0-0 and 1-0.

In the following season, Cruzeiro also had more success in everyday league life. With first place in the preliminary group and fifth place in the overall table, they qualified for the semi-finals, in which Botafogo FR (1: 1 and 0: 0) was eliminated due to the away goals rule . Dida remained number one, but was unable to play all games due to an injury. Nevertheless, he conceded only 19 goals in 20 games. He made his debut in the Brazilian Cup competition Copa do Brasil . In the Supercopa Sudamericana , they made it to the semi-finals again. Already in the quarterfinals, Dida made a significant contribution to the success with his parades in the penalty shoot-out against FC São Paulo . Cruzeiro did not have a title for this season either: in the Copa de Oro Nicolás Leoz was again the goalkeeper in the penalty shootout of the second leg against São Paulo guarantee of success.

Dida finally established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Brazilian league in 1996. In 22 of 25 games of the championship, in which Cruzeiro was first in the table after the main round, only to be eliminated in the quarter-finals, he had to accept only 18 goals. Thanks to his quick reactions and his ability to defuse penalties, he was once again awarded the award of the best goalkeeper. In addition to the state championship in Minas Gerais , Cruzeiro was also able to win the Copa do Brasil competition. In both final games against Palmeiras São Paulo , Dida was on the field and had to concede a goal at 1-1 and 2-1. In the Supercopa Sudamericana , the end took place this year in the quarterfinals, although Dida defused three penalties from the shoot-out in the second leg against the Boca Juniors .

In the next season, Dida was able to play all 25 league games for the first time in his time at Cruzeiro and also completed all other competitive games. In terms of sport, the season was disappointing, although the state championship was defended by Minas Gerais . The league remained only two points ahead, the keeper also had to digest a 0: 5 against São Paulo, among other things, the defending champion was eliminated in the cup in the round of sixteen and in the Supercopa Sudamericana was already over after the preliminary round. Nevertheless, Dida was able to win his biggest title in South America with Cruzeiro in 1997, the Copa Libertadores (South American Champions League). In the final, they beat Sporting Cristal after 0-0 and 1-0. Dida was between the posts of his club for the full time in these two games. In the eighth and semi-finals he was able to prove his class as a “penalty killer” in this competition. At the end of the season he faced the Borussia Dortmund team with Cruzeiro in Tokyo as part of the World Cup , where it was however a 2-0 defeat.

After 1993 and 1996, Dida was named the best goalkeeper in the Brazilian league for the third time in 1998. The captain had previously led his Cruzeiro team to the championship final. But here he was powerless in the 2: 2, 1: 1 and 0: 2 against Corinthians São Paulo . What remained was Minas Gerais' renewed state championship. The team also reached the final in the national cup, but without Dida, who was represented by Paulo César , they lost to Palmeiras São Paulo . While the defending champion in the Copa Libertadores was eliminated in the round of 16, they had to give up the third final of the year against Palmeiras in the final of the Coppa Mercosur , although Dida had played all the games in this competition. At least one success could be booked in the Recopa Sudamericana , but Dida was not on the field in the finals against CA River Plate . After nine titles with Cruzeiro and 188 competitive games as well as 205 goals conceded, he was now considered by many experts to be the best goalkeeper in the Série A. At the age of 25, he was thinking, like many of his compatriots, about continuing his career in Europe.

At AC Milan

It was here that the Italian top club AC Milan noticed him. In early 1999 he left Cruzeiro to change there. This resulted in a month-long transfer tussle with Cruzeiro, as a result of which he was on loan at the Swiss FC Lugano in the first half of the year . But in the National League A he did not play a single game.

First loan to Brazil

For the 1999/2000 season , Dida finally moved to AC Milan, who immediately loaned him to Corinthians São Paulo . Coach Alberto Zaccheroni had announced that he had only planned the Brazilian as goalkeeper number three behind Christian Abbiati and Sebastiano Rossi . In Brazil, however, Dida immediately regained a regular place and led Corinthians as first in the table into the knockout phase. Progress was also secured in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, where Dida saved two penalties from Raí in a 3-2 draw against local rivals FC São Paulo , so that, like last year, he was in the final of the championship with Cruzeiro. After Dida did not concede a goal in two of the three games (3: 2, 2: 0, 0: 0), he became Brazilian champions for the first time in his career. In addition, there was the title of State Master of São Paulo . In addition, he was again honored with the award of the best goalkeeper in the league. In the first half of 2000 he was able to participate in the Copa Libertadores after winning the national title with Corinthians . In the semifinals, it was eliminated on penalties against Palmeiras . A special highlight for the club was the participation in the first FIFA Club World Cup in January. After a 2-0 win against Raja Casablanca , the duel with Real Madrid followed . At 2-2, Dida was able to save his club a point by defusing a Nicolas Anelka penalty . After another win against Al-Nasr , Corinthians moved into the final against CR Vasco da Gama . Here, too, Dida was instrumental in the victory by keeping Gilberto's penalty kick in the shoot-out . Shortly before the start of the new season in the Brazilian league in June, the loan deal with Corinthians ended.

For the 2000/01 season Dida returned to Milan. In the absence of the actual regular goalkeeper Christian Abbiati , who was with Italy at the Summer Olympics , Dida got the place in the goal in the Champions League . He made his debut in the Milan team in the 4-1 win against Beşiktaş Istanbul on the first day of the group. But just a week later, in the game at Leeds United , he made a serious mistake when he let the rain-soaked ball slip into the net in the penultimate minute after a long-range shot to make it 0-1. As a result, he played the remaining four group games and had no goals in the 2-0 win against FC Barcelona , but after Abbiati's return he had to move back to the second rank. His first and only match in Serie A this season he played on November 1 in a 2-0 draw against FC Parma . In addition, like some other Serie A players, he was involved in a Visa affair, which resulted in a one-year Serie A suspension in June 2001 . In October 2000 it turned out that Dida had registered in Italy with a Portuguese passport, which, however, turned out to be forged during a check in order to circumvent the foreigner regulation. Milan now reported Dida as a non-EU foreigner, but the Italian football association FIGC fined the AC and banned Dida from the league, while the world association FIFA imposed a one-year ban on him from appearances in the national team. In 2003 he was sentenced to seven months probation by a court in Milan in the wake of the affair.

Second loan to Brazil

Thus, Dida could no longer be used in the second half of the 2000/01 season. In order to gain match practice, he was loaned out again to Corinthians in September 2001. There he was in eight league games on the field, but Corinthians was only 18th. In the Copa do Brasil , he then moved into the final with the team. With Dida in goal, Brasiliense was defeated 2: 1 and 1: 1. Another title could be retracted at the Torneio Rio-São Paulo , where Dida played 18 games. After a total of 75 competitive games and 97 goals conceded, Dida left Corinthians for good and returned to Milan after the loan deal ended in the summer of 2002 .

Regular goalkeeper at Milan

The 2002/03 season began Dida again only as a substitute goalkeeper for the Rossoneri behind Abbiati. However, he was injured in the UEFA Champions League qualifier against Slovan Liberec in August and was replaced by Dida at halftime. The Brazilian finally established himself as number one in the AC through decent performances. In 30 of the 38 league games in which Milan finished third, he was on the field and only had to reach behind him 23 times. While he was spared in the Coppa Italia behind Abbiati and so did not participate in the victory in this competition, Dida even became a hero after his strong performances in the championship in the Champions League. He only had to accept seven goals in 14 games. After the happy progress in qualifying against Liberec thanks to the away goal rule, Milan put in a sovereign group stage and took first place. In the second group stage, the Milanese had already made it through two games before the end. They beat Ajax Amsterdam in the quarter-finals , before defeating Inter Milan in the semi-finals thanks to the away goals rule . In the final against Juventus Turin it came after a 0-0 after extra time to penalties. Dida saved three Turin penalties (shot by David Trezeguet , Marcelo Zalayeta and Paolo Montero ) and thus had significant success in AC Milan final victory. As the first Brazilian goalkeeper, he was subsequently nominated for the Ballon d'Or election.

Dida at a home game against Fiorentina (2007)

In the summer, the goalkeeper played with Milan in the UEFA Super Cup , which ended with a 1-0 victory over FC Porto . A defeat on penalties, however, set it in the World Cup against the Boca Juniors . Dida was also an important performer when the Rossoneri won the championship in the 2003/04 season . He conceded only twenty goals in 32 games and thus ensured that Milan confidently secured the Scudetto with an eleven point lead . He played his first two games in the Coppa Italia in the quarter-finals against AS Roma . In the Champions League, the defending champion was eliminated in the quarter-finals, but Dida held up well here too. Among other things, he secured victory in the group game against Ajax Amsterdam in stoppage time when he was able to parry a shot by Rafael van der Vaart from a few meters with a quick reaction. After his outstanding achievements, he was voted third in the 2004 World Goalkeeper election.

Milan won another title in the Italian Super Cup with 3-0 against Lazio Rome . The start of Serie A went less well a few days later: in the seventh minute of the game, Dida was sent red against AS Livorno and suspended for one game. Then he played all matches except for the insignificant game on the penultimate game day. Although he only conceded 23 goals and Milan saved a few points with his saves, it was only enough for the runner-up behind Juventus Turin in the end . In the Champions League, too, the ball hit Dida's goal only nine times in 13 games. After the sovereign progress in the group stage and victory in the round of 16 against Manchester United , they met local rivals Inter Milan in the quarter-finals . The Rossoneri had won the first leg 2-0 and were also 1-0 in the second leg on April 12, 2005, when Inter supporters began throwing objects onto the field as a result of a lost goal. In the 74th minute, Dida was hit in the shoulder by a flare while kicking a goal. Despite a half-hour break in the game, he had to be replaced because of a shoulder bruise and a first-degree burn. Shortly thereafter, the game was finally canceled by the German referee Markus Merk and scored 3-0 for Milan . Despite his injury, Dida returned to goal five days later in Serie A. But in the semifinals against PSV Eindhoven and also in the final against Liverpool , in which AC lost a 3-0 lead, he did not make the safest impression. In the final he was able to save a penalty, but Xabi Alonso converted the margin to equalize. Dida also thwarted an attempt on penalties - that of John Arne Riise - but in the end it was not enough to win. After all, he set a new Champions League record with seven straight games, which was broken by Arsenal's Jens Lehmann in the next season . At the end of the year he was named FIFPro Goalkeeper of the Year, and was voted second in the World Goalkeeper poll.

The 2005/06 season was not as strong for Dida as in previous years and he was partly to blame for some goals conceded. Nevertheless, he received only 31 goals in Serie A and only missed two games. In the final accounts it was again only enough to place second behind Juventus. In the wake of the manipulation scandal , Milan was later even downgraded to third place. In the Champions League , Milan met FC Bayern Munich after surviving the preliminary round . This was beaten 1: 1 and 4: 1. After Olympique Lyon were defeated, the Rossoneri faced FC Barcelona in the semifinals . Despite the 1-0 defeat in the first leg, Dida, who played all Champions League games, found her way back to strong form and prevented a bigger defeat. After the 0-0 win at San Siro, the AC was eliminated.

Dida and Milan got off to a good start in the following season: after the 2: 1 at the start against Lazio Rome the keeper stayed 446 minutes without conceding a league goal. On September 20, he played his 200th competitive game for AC in a 1-0 win against Ascoli Calcio . In 25 Serie A games, Dida only had to reach behind 19 times. Despite eight penalty points, it was enough for the Milanese to take fourth place. The start to the Champions League was also strong, with Dida only conceding two goals in five games in the group stage. Especially in the second half of the season, however, the Brazilian suffered from injuries. Knee and back problems kept preventing missions. The health problems were also noticeable when he played: his performances in the back series were changeable. In order to gain match practice, he was used again in the Italian Cup for the first time in two seasons. In the 1: 3 in the semifinals against AS Roma , he saved a penalty. After moving into the quarter-finals of the Champions League against Celtic Glasgow , FC Bayern Munich was waiting . In the 2-2 first leg, Dida was complicit in both goals conceded by Daniel Van Buyten . However, he made up for these mistakes with an excellent performance in the 2-0 second leg. In the first leg of the semi-final, he failed again with two goals conceded at 2: 3. But here, too, he was able to improve in the second leg and was significantly involved in the 3-0 final result. He was also strong in the final against Liverpool and made it 2-1 and his second CL title after 2003.

The 2007/08 season was disappointing for Milan with fifth place in the league - thus qualifying for the Champions League was missed. At least the UEFA Super Cup could be secured 3-1 against Sevilla FC . Dida also had major health problems that year and kept missing games. His performance also fell as a result. On December 23, he made a bad mistake in the local derby against Inter Milan when he let a harmless shot by Esteban Cambiasso pass to make it 2-1 for Inter. Despite his not always safe performances, he conceded only eleven goals in 13 Serie A games. As early as October 3, 2007, Dida was lightly touched on the neck by a speedster from the Celtic supporters on the pitch at the Champions League game in Glasgow shortly after the 2-1 winning goal for the Scots , whereupon the Brazilian first took up the chase. but fell after a few meters and was replaced on a stretcher as if injured. The UEFA detained after the incident for two games in the UEFA Champions League . After AC Milan protested the suspension, it was reduced to one game. Despite this fake accident, Milan were the group winners. At the 2007 FIFA Club World Cup , Dida became the first player to win this title for the second time in his career after the Rossoneri knocked out Boca Juniors 4-1 in the final . With six completed Club World Cup games in his career, he also set a new record that lasted until the next year. At the beginning of January, Dida played his last match of the season against SSC Napoli . After a knee injury, he was taken out of goal by coach Carlo Ancelotti shortly afterwards and replaced by Zeljko Kalac , leaving the Brazilian on the bench until the end of the season.

For the new 2008/2009 season, Christian Abbiati , who was loaned to Atlético Madrid , returned to Milan. Behind the Italian, Dida still had to be content with number two status. After all, the Brazilian was a regular goalkeeper and played all games in the UEFA Cup , although he lost to Werder Bremen in the round of 32 . Dida should also collect match practice in the Coppa Italia, but the Rossoneri were already defeated by Lazio Rome in the first round . After Abbiati was injured in the Serie A match against AC Siena on March 15, Dida replaced him for the last ten match days and only conceded seven goals. He did not score six times.

But even for the 2009/10 season Dida could not establish himself as a regular goalkeeper, as he missed large parts of the preparation due to injury. But on October 18, the new number one, Marco Storari , injured himself in the run-up to the Serie A match against AS Roma and the Brazilian had to step in. But just three days later, in the Champions League duel with Real Madrid , he made a serious mistake: after catching a ball, he ran a few steps forward to tee off when the ball jumped to his knee and out of his hands fell so that Raúl could transform. As a result, he secured Milan a few points with his saves in Serie A, for example in the 2-2 draw against SSC Napoli , and therefore stayed in goal when Storari had recovered. In the second half of the season, the Brazilian and Abbiati took turns in goal, because coach Leonardo could not commit himself to a regular goalkeeper, as both showed good form. Abbiati played first after an injury from Didas, but at the end of the season the Brazilian was back in goal. Since his contract with Milan expired at the end of June, he played his last league game for the ACM on May 15, 2010, in the encounter with Juventus Turin , which the black and reds won 3-0. Shortly before the end, in the 88th minute, Dida was replaced in his last game for the Milan club to the applause of the fans against Christian Abbiati . In 2011 Dida announced the end of his career after he had not found a new club.

Return to professional football

During the summer break of 2012, Dida signed a contract with Associação Portuguesa de Desportos until the end of 2012 . On June 23, 2012, the 6th matchday of the 2012 season, Dida made his first appearance after retiring when he was in the starting line-up in the home game against São Paulo (1-0). Since then he has been the club's regular goalkeeper. After 32 appearances, Dida left the club for Gremio Porto Alegre . After a year, Dida moved to city rivals Internacional Porto Alegre .

National team

Dida made his debut for the Brazilian national team in 1995. From then on he was a regular member of the Seleção squad for more than ten years. Behind Cláudio Taffarel and Gilmar , he is the Brazilian goalkeeper with the third most appearances for his country. Before he was used in the national team, Dida already played in the youth teams of the association. With the U-21 he was able to win the Junior World Championship in Australia in 1993 . In the final, they prevailed against the team from Ghana. Dida only had to reach behind her three times during the entire tournament.

On July 7, 1995, he came to his premiere game against Ecuador in the dress of the A-team. The following year he was number 1 at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 1996 , where he and his team were able to advance to the finals, which they then lost 2-0 to Mexico . Alongside Caio , Carlinhos Paulista , Narciso dos Santos and Zé Maria , the goalkeeper was one of the few who did not miss a minute of the tournament. In the same year Dida was also in the goal of the Brazilians at the Summer Olympics , where the bronze medal could be won. The following year he was in the team's squad when it won the 1997 Confederations Cup . He asserted himself in front of Rogério Ceni and was a regular when winning the title. Beside him it was only Aldair who was on the field full time at every game. At the 1998 World Cup in France, Dida then had to slip back into the second link. Although he was in the squad , he was only number three behind Cláudio Taffarel and Carlos Germano . Brazil was runner-up in the world championship. At the 2002 World Cup , Dida was again a replacement behind the number 1 Marcos due to an injury . Before that he was the goalkeeper at the 1999 Copa America win. There, a saved penalty ensured progress in the quarter-finals against Argentina (2-1) and only had to grab twice. Due to Marcos' persistent form crisis, he matured to number one in the team of the five-time world champion. Dida was a regular goalkeeper for the Confederations Cup in 2005 . In the 0: 1 in the group game against Mexico, he was the only goalkeeper in the entire tournament to save a penalty. With 22 games Dida is the record player of the Confederations Cup, twice he was able to win the title there with the team, and he also took part in five consecutive editions.

For the 2006 World Cup , Dida then traveled to a World Cup tournament for the first time as number one. After the disappointing tournament in Germany with the quarter-final against France , Dida ended his international career, although he only conceded two goals in the entire tournament.
