Career

In the club

Esteban Cambiasso began his football career in the youth teams of the Argentinos Juniors . The midfielder was signed by Real Madrid in 1996 as a 16-year-old but it was not until he was 23 before he could make a name for himself with Los Blancos. At the UEFA Super Cup in Monaco, he helped the then Champions League winner to a 3-1 win over Feyenoord. With two brilliant individual performances, he prepared two goals and thus laid the foundation for Real's first triumph in this competition. Previously, he was loaned to his home country Argentina for a few years , where he scored 14 goals in 98 games for CA Independiente . After changing clubs, he made another 12 goals in 37 games for CA River Plate in the 2001/02 season .

The surplus of midfielders at Real Madrid made it difficult to get a regular place. Cambiasso was not spared of that, who moved to Inter Milan after the contract expired in 2003/04 , where he signed a four-year contract.

Cambiasso quickly established himself as a regular and top performer of the traditional Milanese club and was one of the strongest midfielders in Serie A for years . For the Nerazzurri he played 430 competitive games and scored 51 goals. His goal for the 2-1 final against Chelsea in the round of 16 of the Champions League season 2009/10 was particularly important, which meant a good starting position for Inter in the second leg against the English top team and thus the foundation for the Champions League -The success of the Milanese put down this year.

In March 2009 Cambiasso signed a new five-year contract until June 30, 2014. Since this was no longer renewed by Inter, Cambiasso joined the Premier League promoted Leicester City in August 2014 , where he signed a one-year contract. Cambiasso was instrumental in ensuring that Leicester was able to fix relegation one matchday before the end of the season, and the Argentine was voted Leicester Player of the 2014/15 season .

On August 7, 2015, Cambiasso moved to the Greek series champion Olympiacos Piraeus for free . Cambiasso won the Greek Super League twice with Olympiakos before leaving the club after two seasons in the summer of 2017.

In the national team

Cambiasso made his debut in the Argentina national team on December 20, 2000 against Mexico . Although he was not included in the squad for the 2002 FIFA World Cup , Cambiasso was then able to assert himself with good performances in the Albiceleste and played in the Confederations Cup in 2005 .

As number 5 of the Argentine national team, he took part in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. On June 30, 2006 he failed in the quarter-finals of the World Cup against Germany in the penalty shoot-out in the decisive penalty kick to goalkeeper Jens Lehmann , which eliminated Argentina .

In the summer of 2007, he again took part in the Copa America . Cambiasso was used as a regular player several times during the tournament. The tournament victory was denied him, however, because Argentina, as in 2004, lost in the final against Brazil . He was not nominated for the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, which caused astonishment among many fans and journalists. He was called up again for the Copa America 2011 in Argentina, but he could not prevent his team from being eliminated early in the quarter-finals.
