The Coppa Italia 2004/05 , the Italian cup competition , began in the 2004/05 season on August 14, 2004 with the first group matches. The two finals took place on June 12th and 15th, 2005 between AS Roma and Inter Milan . Inter won the final after a 2-0 win at the Stadio Olimpico and a 1-0 win at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium at home with a final score of 3-0 and thus celebrated the 4th Coppa Italia title in the club's history. In addition, this was the first edition of a series in which these two teams faced each other in the final from 2005 to 2008.
A total of 48 teams from the three top divisions in Italy took part in the 57th edition of the highest Italian cup competition. By increasing the total number of participants in Serie A games from 18 to 20 teams from the 2004/05 season onwards , the top division will provide 20 clubs for Coppa Italia from this year on.
The first eight teams in the final table of the previous season are set directly for the round of 16. In the qualifying round for the round of 16, the teams ranked ninth to 14th from last season and the two best promoted teams from last season B are seeded.
The 8 remaining places for the qualification round will be awarded to the first in the group in a group stage. The teams from Serie B and the winner of the Coppa Italia from Serie C play in eight groups of four teams each . Since AC Cesena rose as the winner of this cup in the same year and was therefore eligible to participate as a second division team, the final opponent Aurora Pro Patria moved up.
The remaining places were then filled with the best teams from the previous Series C. Due to the bankruptcy-related forced relegations of SSC Napoli and AC Ancona in Serie C2, seven other teams from Serie C were required in addition to Aurora Pro Patria . These were the first four of the Girone A and the top three of the Girone B . The AS Viterbese Calcio was not considered as third in Girone B due to financial difficulties, whereby Acireale Calcio moved up as fourth .
In the group stage everyone played against everyone, from the qualifying round for the round of 16, a home and return match was played.
The qualified group winners had home rights in the first leg. In the event of a tie, the away goal rule applied . The results must always be viewed from the perspective of the first named team.
Inter had already achieved a very good starting position with the 2-0 win in Rome, which enabled them to secure the fourth cup success in the club's history with an undisputed 1-0 win at home.
Inter coach Roberto Mancini won this competition for the ninth time in his career, the third time as a coach and previously six times as a player.
The top scorer was Andrea Lazzari from Atalanta Bergamo with nine goals , although he and his team failed in the quarter-finals against eventual winners Inter Milan . This was possible because Atalanta had to play far more games through the group stage and qualifying round.
The mode of the Cup, especially the late entry of the favorites, continued to be criticized. Smaller clubs had fewer chances and had to play far more games. Real cup surprises were almost impossible. The mode was therefore changed for the 2005/06 season .
