The Coppa Italia , the Italian cup competition, began in the 2008/09 season on August 9, 2008 with the first round matches. The final took place on May 13, 2009 between Lazio Rome and Sampdoria Genoa . Lazio won the game on penalties and secured their fifth cup win in the club's history .

A total of 78 teams took part in the 61st edition of the competition. All of Serie A in the 2008/09 season and 20 clubs in the current Serie B , as Messina and Spezia were not eligible to play due to financial difficulties. In addition, 20 the team from the Lega Pro Prima Divisione (formerly C1 provided), each 10 finishers of Girone A and Girone B . The Lega Pro Seconda Divisione (formerly C2 ), however, presented only nine teams, each of the group winners and playoff finalists Girone A, B and C . From the highest amateur league in Italy, Serie D , the remaining nine places were filled.

In the first round, the 36 teams of the three lowest divisions met each other. The winners of the games then meet in the second round against the 22 clubs of Serie B. In the third round, the first division teams from places 9–20 of the previous season met the winners of the previous round. The 16 winners of this third round first play 8 teams against each other, which then play against the clubs ranked 1-8 of the previous season in the round of 16.

Except for the semi-finals, the knockout system was used , only the round of the last four was decided by means of a return game.

The final of the Coppa Italia took place on May 13th, 2009 at 8:45 pm in Rome. For the fifth time in the club's history, Lazio won the cup competition. The game ended in regular time in a 1-1 draw after Mauro Zárate scored for Lazio and Giampaolo Pazzini for Sampdoria Genoa each. Since extra time ended goalless, the decision was made on penalties, in which the hosts prevailed.
