history

Old coat of arms of Sorrento Calcio

Sorrento Calcio was founded in 1945, shortly after the end of the Second World War . Initially, the club played in lower-class leagues. In the late 1960s, Sorrento Calcio first became known to a wider audience when they rose to Serie D , then the fourth-highest division in Italian football. There, the players from Sorrento Calcio scored the most goals of all teams in this division and they were promoted to Serie C in the first season before FC Turris. Since the two teams were tied at the top of the table, a decision game for promotion was necessary, which Sorrento won 1-0. In Serie C, the success story of Sorrento Calcio continued, as the club held the class with a fourth place and was even close to promotion. Sorrento left today's first and second division clubs such as US Lecce , FC Crotone and Pescara Calcio behind, but US Casertana , next to US Avellino one of Sorrento Calcio's biggest rivals, secured the rise . In the following year, Sorrento Calcio took first place in the Girona C with a point ahead of Salernitana Calcio and was able to rise to Serie B , the second highest Italian football league , for the first time in its history . With players like Giuseppe Bruscolotti , later Italian champion with SSC Napoli , you had to relegate directly from a penultimate place, while the promoted AC Reggiana and CFC Genoa were able to hold onto the second division.

This relegation sank the popularity of Sorrento Calcio, which was enormous due to the almost meteoric rise from provincial club to professional club, as the club could not qualify for Serie B again in the coming years and stayed in Serie C for many years. When Serie C was divided into Serie C1 (third highest division) and Serie C2 (fourth highest division) in 1978, Sorrento had to compete in the latter division in the following season, as they only came 14th in the series in the decisive season C and only teams that had reached at least 12th place qualified for the C1 series. After many years in the midfield of today's Lega Pro Seconda Divisione , Sorrento Calcio was able to celebrate promotion back to Serie C1 in 1985 after having occupied second place behind Licata Calcio in the table . In the third division, Sorrento was able to establish itself first and took eighth place in the first season after promotion. Only a year later, however, you were knocked off last and had to relegate to Serie C2, where you then finished fifth and missed the direct return to the next higher division. The following year, the club had to withdraw from the C2 series despite having achieved fifth place because of financial difficulties.

As a result, a restart in Series D was necessary. In the following years Sorrento Calcio even rose a few times in regional leagues before returning to Serie C2 in 2006. In the same year, the club also won the Coppa Italia Serie D. As in the 1970s, Sorrento Calcio also started a march this time, which only two years after leaving Serie D, the club returned to Serie C1, now in Lega Pro Prima Renamed Divisione , brought. During this time Sorrento Calcio also got the Coppa Italia Lega Pro . In 2013, however, they were relegated to the fourth-class Lega Pro Seconda Divisione after they had just reached the playout games against relegation as fifteenth in the table, but were inferior to AC Prato there. And there, too, Sorrento Calcio was not in good shape. Since the league was reallocated for the 2014/15 season, the first eight teams qualified for the Lega Pro 2014/15. Sorrento Calcio was only ninth and had to go into Serie D after losing to the US Arzanese . Sorrento did not really deteriorate with that, because from 2014 Serie D is again the fourth highest Italian football league. However, in 2015 they were relegated to Eccellenza , the fifth division. In the following year, they even went down to the sixth class promotion . In 2016 a merger with other clubs in Sorrento followed and the club was renamed FC Sorrento . Since you get the starting place from one of the clubs you will get back to Eccellenza in 2016. In 2017 the association was renamed ASD Sorrento 1945 .
