Delfino Pescara 1936 is an Italian football club from Pescara , a city in Abruzzo . The club has played its home games at the Stadio Adriatico - Giovanni Cornacchia since December 29, 1955 . The club, which was founded in 1936 as Pescara Calcio , has played seven seasons in Serie A so far . The club was able to qualify for the top Italian division for the first time in 1977 and is so far the only club from Abruzzo that has played in Serie A.

history

Beginnings

The club was not officially founded until 1936, but football was played in Pescara before that. When the province of Pescara was established in 1927, the association "Tito Acerbo" was founded, but it was unsuccessful.

In 1930 a new association, the SS Abruzzo, was founded. However, since there was an oversupply of players, two teams were quickly formed: SS Abruzzo A and SS Abruzzo B. Both teams took part in the championship of the second regional division in 1931/32. SS Abruzzo B was finally champion in front of the clubs from L´Aquila and Chieti. In 1932 the club changed its name and now appeared as AS Pescara. As there was no success, this club was quickly dissolved again.

Four years after the AS was founded, the SS Pescara (officially Società Sportiva Pescara Calcio , today Pescara Calcio) was launched. For the first time, the newly founded team played in the traditional white and sky blue striped jerseys. The name of the team as "biancazzurri" is derived from this. Due to their white and blue jerseys and club colors, the club is mostly called BiancAzzurri today and is also - nowadays less and less - known as Delfini . In the founding year of 1936, Angelo Vetta was named the first president and Edmondo De Amicis became the first coach in the club's history. At that time the team was playing on a field that had been converted into a football field.

The SS Pescara took part in the championship of the regional 1st division in the 1937/38 season. Already in the first year the title could be won with one point ahead of the team from Ascoli. This also meant promotion to the Serie C . The new coach Pietro Piselli went down as the first successful coach in the history of the club. In the following years a coach change was made at Pescara almost every year. For the 1940/41 season, Mario Pizziolo , who won the 1934 World Cup as a player with the Italian national team , took over the Abruzzo club and, as the winner of the Girone F, reached the promotion games to the second highest division, Serie B, and sat in this together with the US Fiumana . During that season, attacker Mario Tontodonati became the top scorer in the third highest division. In the 1941/42 season Pescara reached third place in the second highest division and only just missed promotion to Serie A. The following season ended in 8th place, and relegation was ensured. After the national championship was interrupted due to the Second World War, the game was resumed in 1946. With 37 points, the team again missed the promotion for the highest league and instead placed third in the Girone C, seven points behind Salernitana Calcio .

Relegation to the amateur leagues and return to Serie B

Two years later, Pescara rose from bottom of the table back to Serie C and a year later was even passed through to the Promozione Interregional . After two years in the doctorate, he was promoted to the IV series. On December 29, 1955, with the game against Como Calcio, the new home stadium of the Biancoazzurri , the Stadio Adriatico , was inaugurated. After the 1957/58 season they returned to Serie C. The team was able to reach the secured midfield ranks in the third division almost constantly in the following years, but had to go into the series after the 1971/72 season as the third-last of the Girone C. D line up. The team was temporarily no longer represented in professional football. After only one year, by winning the Girone H, the direct return to Serie C followed and in the following season 1973/74 Pescara managed to march through as the winner of the Girone C and qualify for the second highest division for the first time in 25 years. The decisive factor was the penalty imposed by the Italian federation, which gave second-placed US Lecce a minus point, allowing Pescara Calcio to take first place. In the 1974/75 and 1975/76 seasons, the team managed to stay in Serie B with a placement in the secured midfield.

The first promotion to Serie A and the following period

The 1976/77 season meant the greatest success in the club's history at the time with the achievement of third place in the championship and the associated first-time promotion to the top Italian division. The first class of the Abruzzo club lasted only a year, however, and Pescara was relegated from bottom of the table.

A year later, the team succeeded in direct promotion. After the third place in Serie B was won, the AC Monza Brianza could be defeated in the decider and the promotion to Serie A was realized again. But the team again did not meet the requirements in the top division and fell one step back at the end of the season. Two years later, the next setback followed with relegation to Serie C1. The three coaches Saul Malatrasi , Mario Tiddia and Giuseppe Chiappella could not prevent relegation. The new coach Domenico Rosati , who had already led the team between 1972 and 1976, then took over as successor. This led the club to an immediate return to Serie B and relegation. After winning the Serie B championship in the 1986/87 season, the Abruzzo team with head coach Giovanni Galeone made it to Serie A for the third time in the club's history. In contrast to the first two appearances in the top division this time in the first year of relegation, as the FC Empoli was imposed a 5-point penalty and Pescara thus placed in front of the Tuscan club and this was relegated to Serie B. In the same season, the club also took part in an international cup competition for the first time and hosted the Mitropa Cup in 1988. In a group of three with Váci Izzo and ŠK Slovan Bratislava , the team from Abruzzo won the first game 4-1 against Váci Izzo and lost in the second group game just 1-0 against Slovan Bratislava. Since all three teams had three points each, the Hungarian club Váci Izzo qualified for the final against SC Pisa due to the best goal difference . The Tuscan team finally secured the tournament victory.

In the 1988/89 season, the team started the season with the newly signed Brazilian attacker Tita and the national players Júnior and Edmar , who have been playing for Pescara for a year . After the team started with a point from the first two games, the biggest bankruptcy of the season followed on matchday three with the 8-2 defeat in Naples. In that game Andrea Carnevale scored three goals for Napoli , Careca and Diego Maradona scored twice each. The two goals for Pescara Calcio by Gian Piero Gasperini and Edmar came from two penalty goals. The biggest surprise came on matchday 18, when the Abruzzo team won 3-1 in the away game at AS Roma . The Brazilian Tita scored all the goals for the guests within 25 minutes. One lap later, Pescara lost 6-1 in the away game at AC Milan and fell back again. By the end of the season, the team had a total of five wins and lost twelve games. Finally, Pescara was third from bottom with 27 points again in Serie B.

The following two years in the championship ended mixed with 8th and 13th place. The club qualified for the 1992/93 season for the last time for the top Italian division. The team started the season successfully and defeated AS Roma on the first day of the match . In the second round, the team lost 4-5 to AC Milan , while the Dutchman Marco van Basten was a triple goalscorer for the Milanese . Defender Franco Baresi also scored two own goals in that game . The team suffered their biggest defeats on matchdays 18 and 34, when they lost 4-0 against AC Milan and Cagliari Calcio . On May 30, 1993 Pescara Calcio managed the biggest surprise of the season and defeated the record champions Juventus Turin 5-1. At the end of the season, however, the team clearly missed relegation with 17 points and then went back to Serie B. For the 1993/94 season, the club was charged three minus points for alleged sporting fraud. With 35 points, the team placed 15th in the league ahead of the tied SSD Acireale Calcio and the relegated AC Pisa on a non- relegation place and successfully prevented the fall into the C1 series.

In the following two years there was a slight upward trend with rank eleven and ninth. The 1997/98 season ended in 13th place and another placement in the middle of the table. The following 1998/99 season began with a 4-1 defeat in Verona and ended with a 3-2 win over Brescia Calcio . Long-time midfielder Michele Gelsi played the best season of his career and scored 13 goals this season, at the end of the season the team collected 63 points and only missed promotion by one point. A year later, a step backwards followed and the club secured relegation by two points. At the beginning of the new millennium with the 2000/01 season , Pescara failed as the bottom of the table clearly on the league goal and earned only 22 points. The main weakness of the team was the weak offensive, which could only score 30 goals in 38 games. After two years in the third division, after the second rank of Girone B behind the tied US Avellino, he took part in the play-offs for promotion back to Serie B. In these, the SS Sambenedettese Calcio was able to achieve a total score of 2 in the semi-finals : 1 goals are defeated. The first leg of the finals for promotion against ASD Martina ended goalless away, and at the Stadio Adriatico the hosts from Abruzzo won 2-0 and qualified again for participation in Serie B.

Recent past

After Pescara Calcio finished 22nd in Serie B in the 2003/04 season , they did not relegate only because of financial problems at other clubs and thus received the right to play for another year in Serie B.

In the following 2004/05 season , the club from Abruzzo fared similarly: Although relegated in terms of sport, the Italian Football Association (FIGC) reclassified it to the second highest division due to the forced relegation from CFC Genoa .

In the 2005/06 season Pescara Calcio secured with twelfth place the league with sporting means. In the 2006/07 season, in which there was also a change at the top of the club - the Italian-American Massimiliano Pincione followed Dante Paterna as president after a few mistakes and confusions - Pescara Calcio rose from bottom of the table (22nd) in the Series C1 from.

For the 2007/08 season, the club had difficulty obtaining approval from the Italian Football Association. In October, Massimiliano Pincione, who had only appeared in the spring, returned his shares in the club. The office of president was taken over by Gerardo Soglia , owner of the hotel chain "Gruppo Soglia". The team reached seventh place and with 53 points remained just four points behind the second-placed AC Ancona , which thus managed direct promotion to Serie B. Also due to the punishment of the association, which deducted a point from Pescara Calcio because of financial difficulties, the qualification for the play-offs was missed, and instead the tied club Perugia Calcio was allowed to compete. In the following season 2008/09, in the now renamed Lega Pro Divisione division, Pescara fell back to 12th place and occupied a safe midfield.

On December 19, 2008 the bankruptcy of the association was announced. The association was finally re-established as Delfino Pescara in 1936 and thus took over the successes and the title of the insolvent Pescara Calcio. For the 2009/10 season, the former international Antonello Cuccureddu was signed as the new coach after his predecessor Giuseppe Galderisi was sacked due to disappointing results. Cuccureddu immediately led the team to the top ranks, he was dismissed on January 12, 2010 after the two days earlier suffered home defeat against the SS Cavese and replaced by Eusebio Di Francesco . At this point in time, the team was fourth in the table, four points behind first-placed Hellas Verona .

Under the leadership of the new head coach Di Francesco, the team established itself in the upper echelons over the course of the season and, with a few points behind the first rank, kept the possibility of direct promotion open. On matchday 34, the team won the away game at Real Marcianise 3-2 and was in first place until a few minutes before the end of the game. At the same time, championship leaders Calcio Portogruaro Summaga and third-place Hellas Verona met . The 1-0 winning goal in favor of Portogruaro fell in the 90th minute, with which the club took the lead again with 59 points and secured direct promotion to Serie B. Pescara Calcio, which was able to earn a point less, joined Hellas Verona, Rimini Calcio and AC Reggiana in the play-offs for the second promotion place in Serie B. In the semi-finals, the team prevailed against Reggiana after a 0-0 away game with a 2-0 home win and reached the finals. The first leg in Verona ended in a 2-2 draw, and on June 13, 2010, a 1-0 home win with a goal from Massimo Ganci ensured the return to the second-highest division after three years.

In the 2011/12 season , Pescara Calcio secured first place in Serie B on the last matchday - thanks to a goal in the 91st minute by Riccardo Maniero - the football club returned from Abruzzo with a 1-0 home win against ASG Nocerina returned to the first Italian league after 20 years. In the 2012/13 season , apart from a few notable successes such as a win against Fiorentina and a draw against AS Roma in the relegation battle, the club remained largely without a chance and ended the season with 22 points behind in the last place in the table, which resulted in direct relegation the second highest league resulted. In particular, the defensive, with 84 goals conceded, clearly the worst in the league, presented itself desolate.

In the 2014/15 season , shortly before the end of the season and the following qualifying round, Massimo Oddo , who was born in Pescara himself , was installed as the new coach. He led the team to the final of the relegation games, where they did not rise against FC Bologna after a 0-0 win at home and a 1-1 draw in Bologna , as they were preferred due to the better end of the season in an eventual draw.

In the following season 2015/16 you could qualify for the playoffs for Serie A after the course of the regular season with fourth place . In this one again reached the final, in which Trapani could be defeated after a 2-0 win in the first leg and a 1: 1 in the second leg and thus the seventh promotion to Serie A could be celebrated. Gianluca Lapadula became one of the heroes of promotion this season after scoring 27 goals.

After some top performers could not be retained, they rose again in the coming season without a singing or sounding as the last directly from. The previously celebrated promotion coach Oddo was replaced in the course of the season by the former promotion coach Zdenek Zeman , with whom the rebuilding and, above all, the renewed promotion should be tackled.
