Sergio Cervato (born March 22, 1929 in Carmignano di Brenta ( PD ), † October 9, 2005 in Florence ) was an Italian football player .

He was a fast, strong defender. He was also known and feared for his shooting power, his strong nerves at the penalty spot and his flat-shot free kicks.

Cervato had already lost his right thumb in an accident with a harvester when he was young.

Player career

In the club

Sergio Cervato began his career at the age of 17 years as a left-back at Tombolo , he then joined FC Bolzano in the series B .

In 1948, after failing a trial at Sampdoria Genoa , Cervato moved to Fiorentina , where he would play until 1959. With the Fiorentina he won the Italian championship in the 1955/56 season and in the following season played all seven games in the European Cup , where they were only stopped in the final by Real Madrid . Cervato played a total of 316 Serie A games for Fiorentina and scored 31 goals.

In 1959 he moved to Juventus Turin , where he played until 1961 and won two more Scudetti and a Coppa Italia . From 1961 to 1965 Sergio Cervato played for SPAL Ferrara where he ended his playing career in 1965.

In the national team

Sergio Cervato made his debut for the national team on April 8, 1951 in a 4-1 victory in the game in Portugal . He took part with Italy in the 1954 World Cup and by 1960 had 28 international matches in which he scored four goals.

Coaching career

After his playing career, Cervato worked as a youth coach at Pescara Calcio , FC Empoli and AC Florence. He later became a player observer before a long illness ended his career.
